Some people have reported that the JAWS cursor does not work properly in much of Windows 10. I already know it doesn’t work properly in universal apps, but it should work in file explorer. Your method is how I usually look at file properties, too, and I’m actually using JAWS 2018 (Windows 10, 21h2). If y ou virtualise the window, though, it’s a better choice in a way, even though it involves a few more keystrokes.

Good morning:

Currently I'm using jaws 2019. When I want to look at the properties of a file, i.e. date created etc. I route Jaws to pc and it is blank, the only word that appears is okay. I set jaws to unrestricted and I get the same result.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

moderated Question regarding the latest update to Quick Assist

Dave Durber

Hello everyone:

Has anyone on the list needed to use Quick Assist recently? I have! I got a prompt telling me there was a new release of Quick Assist, and I would need to get it from the Microsoft Store. My question is:

Has anyone who has limited or no vision on the list, successfully try and find and download the update to Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store. Personally, I had no success in downloading and applying the new update for this program.

I pose the following suggestion:

I would like anyone who has no vision or, very limited vision, try and successfully download the update for Quick Assist from the Microsoft Store. If anyone who is not vision impaired, please do not come in on this topic for at least 2 days, to see if muy challenge can be met. If anyone who is visually impaired, managed to do what I failed to do myself, will they plese enlighten me as to how they did it, with step-by-step instructions, so I can complete the update to Quick Assist. Whuy Microsoft did not include the latest update to Quick Assist as part of the Windows update process, will always be a mystery, except to Microsoft, of course.

Thanks in anticipation:

I’d like to know what version  of jaws was used as well as the iphone  that was  used for this task?  Thank you for any information that you might have concerning this question.  Has anyone tried this with the pearl camera and jaws if so, what results did you get.

Mike, Dave & Bill,

Thanks this was perfect and gave me what I was trying to accomplish. I was wondering about the rate as well so this was very helpful.

Hi Eileen,

Here are a few keystrokes that haven't been mentioned:

Alt, Control, Windows + PageUp
Increases the rate of the active voice and saves the new rate.

Alt, control, Windows + PageDown
Decreases the rate of the active voice and saves the new rate.

Alt+control+PageUp
Temporarily increases the rate of the active voice.

Alt+control+PageDown
Temporarily decreases the rate of the active voice.

Hi,

I’m new to this group, but have used Jaws a long time. Last December I got a new HP all-in-one computer running Windows 11 and Jaws 2022 most recent update.

On the new system my speaker is built in as a part of the screen (at least that is how it feels). On my old Win 10 computer I had a separate speakers and it had a little volume control that I could increase and decrease the volume easily and quickly. I’ve tried looking in the Jaws help but cannot find what I need to do in order to adjust the Jaws volume on the fly. Can anyone point me in the correct direction for making this adjustment?

Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't be doing that. I will give it a shot with jaws 2022 which is what I am running here and see what happens.

hi
I just made an amaizing discovery with my iPhone and jaws. first I went to youtube.com and pulled up and started to watch a japanese anime episode with english subtitles. I then used jaws to put youtube into full screen mode. I then loaded up superSense app on my iPhone and put it into instant reader or quick read or constant reed, live Reader mode. pointed the phone at the screen and held it as steady as possible and my iPhone was reading the subtitles to me! it was so cool that my iPhone was doing something that jaws can't do! My phone was reading text directly drawn to the screen, as it appeared, in realtime, as the video played! I really really wish jaws had a virtual camera mode that is also further customizeable with jaws scripts and frames manager so jaws could do what my iPhone was doing, but take it even further. let the jaws virtual camera recognise buttons and other on-screen controls, highlight bars, graphics and stuff, and give the user access to such items using the keyboard. And you could even use the jaws virtual camera to scan entire inaccessible amazon kindle books and turn them into text or scan directly to word. NVDA has an outdated addon that tries to read live text but fails pretty bad at it. I think jaws could do better with the jaws virtual camera. Why do I need my iPhone to read live video subtitles? Amaizing that seeing-A-I and super sense can do what jaws cannot give me access to stuff that jaws can't even see. Because jaws does not have a virtual camera feature. If jaws had a scriptable virtual camera and that virtual camera could also be further customized with both script manager and frames manager then the jaws screen reader would be doing something NVDA and narrator don't do and would put jaws lightyears ahead of the other windows screen readers.   But until jaws has a virtual camera, I guess I have to use a real physical iPhone camera in order to read live video subtitles.

Hi, John. View the properties of a file or folder in the following manner,

1. Navigate to the file or folder, but do not open it.

2. Press ALT plus ENTER on the file name.

3. Press ALT plus JAWS key plus W to virtualize the screen.

4. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to navigate through the information.

5. Use the left and right arrows to navigate through the information, character by character.

6. Use CONTROL plus Left Arrow, and CONTROL plus Right Arrow to navigate the information word by word.

7. Use CONTROL plus A to select all information on the screen.

8. Once selected, use CONTROL plus C to copy the information to the clipboard.

9. Use CONTROL plus V to paste the copied information into any text or word processing file.

Press INSERT/JAWS KEY+SPACE BAR, then press V, JAWS will say "Volume", press J, for the JAWS Volume or, S, for the System Volume. In either case, press the UP or, DOWN ARROW keys, to change the volume. When you have changed the volume to your liking, press the ESC key, to close the JAWS Window.

Hi, Eileen. The simplest way to adjust JAWS volume is,

1. Press JAWS key plus SPACE.

2. Press the letter V for Volume, followed by the letter J for JAWS.

3. Press the Up and Down Arrows to adjust JAWS volume in small increments.

4. To adjust JAWS volume in larger increments at once, press Page up and Page down.

You can also adjust System volume this way by doing the following,

1. Press JAWS key plus SPACE.

2. Press the letter V for Volume, followed by the letter S for System.

3. Press the Up and Down Arrows to adjust JAWS volume in small increments.

4. To adjust JAWS volume in larger increments at once, press Page up and Page down.

This is pretty amazing, in my opinion.

I could see this being useful possibly in things like Zoom or Teams, when work chats are taking place as well, to read out the text being typed by other users.

Sometimes, I purposely mute Jaws, because there is so much it’s reading during these things.
