If you are still hearing JAWS prior to a Zoom meeting, to me it points to the audio settings in Zoom. How are the ear-buds listed in the sound settings? Or, which speaker is JAWS being heard from, which one is used by JAWS in the JAWS menus? Knowing this will help set the Zoom settings

Re: changing how jaws speaks a word
You want to modify the Jaws dictionary. If you only
want to change the pronunciation of this word while in a specific program try
the following.
1. Open the specific app / program and press,
Insert + D, to open the Jaws dictionary for this app / program.
2. Tab to, Add, press the spacebar to open.
You're in the, Actual word edit field, so type the word as it actually
is.
3. Tab once to the, Replacement field, and type the word
the way you want it to be pronounced by Jaws.
4. Now tab through the other dialogues making any
settings changes you feel you might need to make, which there shouldn't be any,
until you get to the, Okay button, and press the spacebar.
4. Now press, Control + S, to save and, Alt + F4, to
close.
If you want this dictionary change to be in effect for
all programs do it this way:
1. Press, Insert + D, to open
the Jaws dictionary, then press, Control, Shift + D, to open the Jaws
default dictionary.
Stay safe and take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Subject: changing how jaws speaks a word
Hi,
I was reading about the Great Lakes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes
I was going through by headings and one of them is sewage,
which if you are listening to this you will discover it is pronounced
incorrectly. It should be sueage, or that is as close as I can get to it. How do
I change how Jaws speaks this word to speak it correctly? Also, when there are
updates will it keep it?

What if you rename the folder Jaws is in, like \freedom scientific\Jaws1
and change the desktop shortcut path in its properties, to reflect it, and then install Jaws a second time, and it will get installed in \freedom scientific\jaws and then there
should be two copies in \freedom scientific.
I am only speculating, but it might work.

As mentioned, I'm not looking to create separate window user accounts. The scenario I presented is more akin to one family member sitting down to help another family member out and adjusting the JAWS settings for their comfort, after which
the first family member switches the settings back for their comfort. It sounds like the only option is the import and export settings feature. I've never done that before. Do you think it is good for this sort of quick settings changes? That would include
things like dictionary changes, voice profile changes, speech and sound scheme changes, etc.

Re: Google Chrome Shortcut Constantly Disappearing
I wonder, when you're setting up your hot key, if you're not maximizing the window do you want the hot key to apply to? When you're in the jaws properties for there desktop app you wanna set a hot key for, and you have set that hot key, tab to
run and press your end key for maximized window. Hopefully that should help.

I do find it hard to believe it is the delete accidentally being pressed, if it always the same desktop shortcut disappearing.
Now if random shortcuts got deleted, then that I might attribute to someone accidentally deleting them.
I remember when icons used to get duplicated all the time, and I believe that was done by someone accidentally right clicking a mouse.
Maybe MS changed the context menu such that accidental right mouse clicks don't duplicate the shortcut.
Also, it would be interesting to note if the folks with the missing chrome shortcuts are the only users of the computer in question.

One interesting issue I discovered, though, is that I can’t get rid of my original Google Chrome desktop shortcut.
I went to the applications menu and tried deleting it that way, but had no luck. When I hit on the delete option, I was asked if I wanted to send the shortcut to the re-cycle bin, and when I said yes, I was told that the shortcut

So, I now have two Google Chrome shortcuts on my desktop.

I appreciate everyone’s help and suggestions.
Tom Behler
Tom and Jeff,
It might be worth trying a completely different approach that Vispero’s tech guys gave me for JAWS’ desktop items. Those icons used to disappear on me all the time. The solution was to add another word or phrase to the icon’s
name. In the case of JAWS 22, for instance, I added “shortcut.” Thus: JAWS 2022 shortcut.” I have no idea why it makes a difference, but it does. I haven’t lost a JAWS icon since. Shouldn’t the same fix work for other icons?
So, the steps:
Place focus on the icon.
Press F2 to enable editing of the icon’s name.
Make the desired change.
Press enter.
That’s it. Simple, utterly mysterious and completely effective.
Jeff:
I tried your new set of instructions, but got only so far.
Here’s what I did:
1 touch the start key, the search menu opens
2 type, desktop icon, JAWS announces, Themes and related settings, System settings, press right to switch preview, press enter here
3 tab to related settings, JAWS announces, Desktop icon settings Link, press enter here
However, once I got to this point, and tried to tabbed to allow themes to change desktop icons, I only found a link, not a checkbox to uncheck.
I think I’m close, but not quite there.
All I know is that this seems much more complicated than it needs to be for making such a simple change.
And, of course, I’m still confused as to why the shortcut is lost to begin with.
If you don’t mind, please let me know where I might still be going wrong, and I’ll give things another try.
Hopefully, more people than just me will benefit from these instructions.
Thanks again!

Try this, hoping it works better
1 touch the start key, the search menu opens
2 type, desktop icon, JAWS announces, Themes and related settings, System settings, press right to switch preview, press enter here
3 tab to related settings, JAWS announces, Desktop icon settings Link, press enter here
4 tab to, Allow themes to change desktop icons check box, you want this unchecked
5 apply the change, Alt+A, or tab to the apply button & press enter
6 close the settings window
Jeff:
I tried several times, but can’t seem to get to the item that you say needs to be un-checked.
Could you send me step-by-step instructions for accomplishing this?

Hello, everyone.
I’m not sure if this is a Jaws or Google issue, but recently, it seems that my alt control G Google Chrome shortcut constantly disappears. Sometimes, it stays for a week or so, but at other times, it doesn’t even stick for a day.
I reinstate the shortcut by accessing Google Chrome on my desktop, and then by going to properties to the shortcut page.
Is there any way I can stop this behavior??

1 touch the start key, the search menu
opens
2 type, desktop icon, JAWS announces, Themes and
related settings, System settings, press right to switch preview, press
enter here
3 tab to related settings, JAWS announces, Desktop
icon settings Link, press enter here
However, once I got to this point, and tried to
tabbed to allow themes to change desktop icons, I only found a link, not a
checkbox to uncheck.
I think I’m close, but not quite there.
All I know is that this seems much more complicated
than it needs to be for making such a simple change.
And, of course, I’m still confused as to why the
shortcut is lost to begin with.
If you don’t mind, please let me know where I might
still be going wrong, and I’ll give things another try.
Hopefully, more people than just me will benefit
from these instructions.
Thanks again!

Hello, everyone.
I’m not sure if this is a Jaws or Google issue, but
recently, it seems that my alt control G Google Chrome shortcut constantly
disappears. Sometimes, it stays for a week or so, but at other times,
it doesn’t even stick for a day.
I reinstate the shortcut by accessing Google Chrome
on my desktop, and then by going to properties to the shortcut
page.
Is there any way I can stop this
behavior??
Thanks!

Do you know the model number of your keyboard? You may be able to reset that without a key mapper. That being said, the question you're asking has been asked and answered, multiple times, in this group. One example: Accessible app to map menu key

I’ve a full Del keyboard that doesn’t have a Windows key on the right side of the spacebar. What is on the right is (going from the spacebar) Alt, key that does nothing, Application key and the control key.
I want to assign that key that does nothing to be my Windows key on the right side. So, I’m looking for a utility that works with JAWS to accomplish this task. Any ideas?

Re: Google Chrome Shortcut Constantly Disappearing
I do find it hard to believe it is the delete
accidentally being pressed, if it always the same desktop shortcut
disappearing.
Now if random shortcuts got deleted, then that I
might attribute to someone accidentally deleting them.
I remember when icons used to get duplicated all
the time, and I believe that was done by someone accidentally right clicking a
mouse.
Maybe MS changed the context menu such that
accidental right mouse clicks don't duplicate the shortcut.
Also, it would be interesting to note if the folks
with the missing chrome shortcuts are the only users of the computer in
question.

Hi,
I also have this problem with the Google Chrome
shortcut.
So now I've renamed it and will wait to see if the hotkey
gets blanked out.
I did have this problem with my Desktop shortcut for Jaws.
With every Jaws update the hot key was blanked out. This hasn't happened for
over a year now perhaps since I renamed it to Jaws22. Each year I have a new
shortcut for that year's version of Jaws. There is no longer a problem with the
short cut being blanked out.

I followed the simpler steps you use from
Vispero Tech Support, and they seem to have worked at least so far.
I guess the true answer will be known when Google
Chrome does another update.
One interesting issue I discovered, though, is that I
can’t get rid of my original Google Chrome desktop shortcut.
I went to the applications menu and tried deleting it
that way, but had no luck. When I hit on the delete option, I was asked
if I wanted to send the shortcut to the re-cycle bin, and when I said yes, I
was told that the shortcut is not found.

Tom and
Jeff,
It might be worth trying a completely different
approach that Vispero’s tech guys gave me for JAWS’ desktop items. Those icons
used to disappear on me all the time. The solution was to add another word or
phrase to the icon’s name. In the case of JAWS 22, for instance, I added
“shortcut.” Thus: JAWS 2022 shortcut.” I have no idea why it makes a
difference, but it does. I haven’t lost a JAWS icon since. Shouldn’t the same
fix work for other icons?
So, the steps:
Place focus on the icon.
Press F2 to enable editing of the icon’s
name.
Make the desired change.
Press enter.
That’s it. Simple, utterly mysterious and
completely effective.

Re: Google Chrome Shortcut Constantly Disappearing
People can just press F2 on an icon or any other
file for that matter, and you can rename it.
Note that when pressing F2, like when most any edit
field, all of the name that is in the field is highlighted, so if you want to
just edit the name and not completely retype it, press home or end or left or
right arrow first, otherwise when you type any letter, the old name will
disappear for the letter you just typed.

Hi
Brian,
There is a simple
solution to this problem to be fair.
Take off the Google
Chrome shortcut completely, create a new one and just call it Chrome. Assign
your hotkey to it, and Google Chrome won’t touch it.
All the
best
Steve
Lenore,
I don't think that either Bill or you are
kidding. Part of this is a misunderstanding on my part triggered by the
use of "disappearing," as when Google Chrome is reinstalled I have never seen
(literally) the Chrome desktop shortcut disappear if you set one up to begin
with.
But it's become clear now that what's disappearing isn't the
desktop shortcut, per se, but the one you had previously modified to use a
custom keyboard shortcut to fire it up. And I kinda sorta alluded to the
idea that certain programs (and Google Chrome is apparently one of them) will
replace their existing desktop with a new one when new versions are
installed. In most every case I've seen this occur, it's because the full
path to the program the desktop shortcut fires up is installed in a new, and
version dependent, folder. But when I look at the Chrome desktop shortcut
on my machine, that doesn't seem to be the case for Chrome.
It's a
mystery to me why any program installer would delete the existing desktop
shortcut, and create a new one afresh, if the application path remains
unchanged. That's just strange.
I have no problem admitting that it
would be very annoying indeed if, with every Chrome version update, you have to
go back in to the desktop shortcut and re-establish a keyboard shortcut for
it. (That, or delete it and restore the one that is sent to the Recycle
Bin back to the desktop).
This might be a good time to have a look at
the Google Accessibility Get In Touch
Page and to Contact
the Google Disability Support Team. There doesn't seem to
be a rational reason for the Google Chrome installer to do this. --

Re: Google Chrome Shortcut Constantly Disappearing
One thing I like doing with shortcuts, upon occasion, is giving them a unique starting character. If one has a shortcut called Google Chrome or Chrome, as an example, there may be other shortcuts beginning with a "g" or a "c". So, before the first letter, insert a character that is less likely to be used to make it unique.
