Hi Mark,

like Bill said: there's no such key but you can write your own script to get informed about the voice rate of the synthesizer in use.

<Code start>

Script SpeakVoiceRate ()

SayInteger (GetVoiceRate (VCTX_GLOBAL))

EndScript

<Code end>

The parameter in the GetVoiceRate () function is the cursor you want to get informed about. The constants are listed in the HJConst.jsh:

VCTX_GLOBAL = "Global"
VCTX_MESSAGE = "Message"
VCTX_KEYBOARD = "Keyboard"
VCTX_PCCURSOR = "PCCursor"
VCTX_JAWSCURSOR = "JAWSCursor"
VCTX_SAY_ALL = "SayAll"
VCTX_MENU_AND_DIALOG = "MenuAndDialog"

If you need more information about installing a script, let me know

Udo

I'll give Udo's suggestion of writing a script a try.  Those global variables are interesting.   Thank you.

Depends on how you change the speech rate.

For example, if you use Control Alt Page Up, you will speed up only the current session. If you use Control Alt Windows Page Up, you will speed up globally, so alt tabbing will then retain that speech rate.

Hi, Mark. No, there isn't. You must go into Voice Settings to get the current rate of speech. And that won't work if you have changed the voice rate on the fly, because as soon as you switch windows, the speech rate will revert back to the default setting.

With Jaws a person pays for the user quality this is why the screen reader costs $1200. On the other hand with NVDA, a user doesn't have to pay anything because the application is open sourced. Freedom scientific have more money to make Jaws user friendly because they have the money and resource to do so. On the other hand, NVACCESS rely on donation and user contribution unorder to keep the project going.

Depends on which app you run.

JAWS is zillions times faster in outlook for example, than NVDA.

This is incorrect. I have had no issues with either screen reader on Windows 10 or 11 on this computer. The Windows 11 is actually faster in both cases, though JAWS is predictably more resource intensive than NVDA.

Dear Rick:

I don't know how to find the dialog either, but I think that if we corresponded by telephone, and I was able to do a JAWS tandem with you, I could find the dialog. I suspect that it is somewhere on that page, not necessarily at the top of the page, or it is on another pane on that same webpage. To get to another pane, you would use the F6 key.

What version of jaws do you have currently? If it is jaws 2022, do the following. Please locate your file in file explorer. Do not open the file but press jaws key plus space and if. This will allow you to OCR the file, of course, after pressing oh. So, that's jaws key plus space and oh to get to OCR. Then press F. for file. After all of your OCR results have been downloaded. Go to the bottom of that link and click on convert to word. You should be set. I hope this helps.

I’m wondering if you change the View to single page under the view menu would that make a difference?

Another way and I don’t know if it will place you on the specific page you want in the pdf is to use the JAWS Layered Command, Insert + Spacebar + O + D and at the end of the conversion save it to Word.

This is just a suggestion.

Hi,

There's probably an obvious solution to this, but I'm not finding it!

Here's an example:

I'm on page 1 of a pdf.

I use CTRL+Shift+N to go to another page, for example, page 40.

The popup appears and I enter page 40 in it.

When I click Okay, I am taken to page 40.

However, when I hit INSERT+Down Arrow or the Down Arrow on page 40,

JAWS jumps back to page 1 and reads that instead.

This is happening in all pdf's and the page numbers above are an example. If I started on page 40 and wanted to go to page 80, JAWS would return to page 40.

How do I get JAWS to read the page I want?

Hello Albert:

Regarding Zoom in Outlook:

  1. When you have a message open and the screen is maximized (windows plus up arrow) you might also press alt q and search for the word zoom. Arrow down to zoom and see if your zoom is set to 100%. Note this is a setting which does not appear if you are looking at your list of emails in a folder. You have to be in an open message.
  2. Sometimes, for whatever reason, when you do open a message, you are not guaranteed that the screen is maximized. Press Windows with up arrow to ensure that it is. I myself have sounds associated with the maximize event so I know, nonvisually, when the screen was maximized after pressing this command.
  3. For complex email messages (this is not one of those) where the message resembles a web page, JAWS sometimes has trouble revealing everything that is contained in messages of this type. In such rare cases, I save the message as an HTML document and open it up in my native browser which, right now, happens to be the new Microsoft Edge. I do not use the “view in browser” function of Outlook because the rendering is not as good and readable as the approach suggested here.

Thanks.

Warm regards,

Curtis Chong

With Jaws a person pays for the user quality this is why the screen reader costs $1200. On the other hand with NVDA, a user doesn't have to pay anything because the application is open sourced. Freedom scientific have more money to make Jaws user friendly because they have the money and resource to do so. On the other hand, NVACCESS rely on donation and user contribution unorder to keep the project going.

Hi,

Check the Microsoft Accessibility / Teams page at:

Freedom Scientific has done a Webinar Training on using Microsoft Teams. You can find the archeive at:

https://www.freedomscientific.com/webinars/microsoft-teams-and-jaws-beyond-the-basics/

The last place I would recommend is Hartgen Consultancy. Brian has done a webinar that is available for purchase along with scripts that he has developed. There is a charge for the webinar recordings and scripts. You can find them Here:

There is amailing list of blind users using MS Teams and you can find it at groups.io by doing a search.
