Reordering Linked In Entries
David Kingsbury
Hi all, Linked In is one of my least favorite websites, in terms of accessibility and usability, but a necessary evil for many people. Does anybody know how to reorder postings on job experience, volunteer activities, etc. It is easy to find the relevant button for reordering a given entry. But nothing happens when I click on it. In theory, activities that I am presently doing reorder themselves to the top, but that is not happening. Googling a question about how to do it tells me to find a red or blue mark and drag it or something completely unhelpful like that. Any ideas on how to do this with a screen reader? Thanks, David

I am having trouble navigating Spotify with JAWS 2022. Does anyone know of a list of keyboard shortcuts or scripts that make the music service more accessible? I have been on the hunt for this for months and I just can’t find anything. I sent a message to Freedom Scientific technical support but of course no answer back.
Any help or suggestions are always welcome. “Don’t use Spotify” is not an answer I would appreciate.

Re: Outlook.com account question
If you allow Outlook to set up your account, that is, you just give it the e-mail address and, when prompted, the password, it will take care of setting up the retrieval protocol without any additional intervention. And it will always choose the following protocols, in this order, if they are available for a given email service provider:
1. Microsoft Exchange (most secure and optimized for Outlook) 2. IMAP 3. POP3 I cannot recall the last time I've had any account set up by either Outlook or Thunderbird (which also does automatic configuration) using POP3 protocol. What the e-mail client "configurators" choose is virtually always best left alone. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Science has become just another voice in the room; it has lost its platform. How would IMAP help you, in your opinion? Can you walk me through how to set it up if it’s better than POP or whatever it is? I’ll need specific details, of course. It might be better for you to do a screen sharing option with me so you can help with this. I absolutely hate messing with settings and stuff and possibly screwing something up totally. Re: Help with Spotify
Tyler Wood
Hi, I use the main Spotify program which is not in the Microsoft store for a few reasons. First and foremost, the ability to navigate by screen reader shortcuts. I can use next and previous button, for example, or checkbox. Spotify's accessibility has really came a long way. In order to get Jaws into so called forms mode, simply use Jaws key plus z, which deactivates the virtual cursor and allows you to move as though in forms mode. This would let you, for example, use keyboard shortcuts like control up and down to control the volume. Pressing Jaws key plus Z again will allow you to browse normally, as though on a website. I hope that helps! thanks

On Windows 10 I use the Spotify app from the Microsoft Store. You can see the shortcuts for playback etc in the menubar. The shortcuts only works if I turn off virtual PC curosr by JAWS+Z. Here is a few key strokes: Play=Space Volume=CTRL+Down or Up arrow Change track=CTRL+Left or right arrow Seek=Shift+Left or Right arrow
Long time ago I try the desktop app but at that time I find the app from Microsoft Store to be much more useful. Maybe it has changed. Here is the shorcut list from Spotify's site. https://support.spotify.com/us/article/Keyboard-shortcuts/ I Think the best accessibility for Spotify will be find in the apps for phones and tablets. Earlier I think there was some scripts available from some one called snowman but I don't remember what they do. As I remember they're not offered for free. Seems they're no onger at his site but maybe you can try to
contact him. The e-mail is listed at the site. http://www.snowmanradio.com/scripts.html

Re: Alt Key Not Working for Accessing Menus
Van Lant, Robin
To build off what Curtis said, I’ve been experiencing an inconsistency that sounds similar. I’m just been playing with collapsing the ribbon and using the simplified ribbon option, but neither seem to activate the issue I have. One thing that seems to get me close to the issue is the auto show/hide ribbon option. If I turn on the auto hide ribbon, then hit and for the insert ribbon, I cannot just tab to the firs option, I have to hit down arrow. Apparently, Control F1 is a toggle of this feature in Office. I suppose I could be accidentally turning it on or off without realizing it. Another way to get to this options list is to hit alt then shift tab until you hear the Ribbon display options menu, then alt down arrow to open the submenu. There are a couple settings – show just tabs, show tabs and controls, and auto hide.
Oddly, now that I’ve been playing around with options, I’m not even able to hit Alt S to send this message and I think I went back to standard ribbon view. Strange…

Hello David:
May I assume here that you have already determined that the ribbon is not collapsed? I have actually experienced this problem a lot but resolve this by not Wonder tapping Alt but by pressing Alt with H instead to get to the Home Tab. This is one of many inconsistencies that new students find confusing with JAWS<smile>. Shift tab till you hear the option and alt down arrow to open the menu. Curtis

Hi all, I am a tech instructor, and from time to time, I get a client whose Alt key acts strangely. That is, when they press the Alt key, the ribbon or dropdown menus do not appear. When I ask them to press Alt in combination with another key (for example, Alt H for the Home tab), it works. But this inconsistency is annoying. All are using up to date versions of JAWS, Windows 10, and MS Office, so outdated software is not the problem. If I remember correctly, we also tried temporarily switching to Narrator, but that didn’t do anything. It also didn’t matter whether we used the left or the right Alt key. In some cases, rebooting the computer worked, at least for some time, in other cases, it didn’t help at all. Any suggestions on how to fix this obnoxious problem? Thanks, David

Hi David,

First thing I would try is to shutdown JAWS and pressing the Alt key to find out if JAWS causes this problem. Maybe there's a sighted person around to check this or your client restarts JAWS immediately after pressing the Alt key in office so JAWS can detect if the Ribbons are activated. Another possibility if you can't find sighted help is to make a screenshot after pressing the Alt key. If this is a JAWS problem I would activate the alternate user by pressing JAWS+Space then Z (this is the shortcut in Germany I hope it's the same on English versions). This temporally sets back the settings to find out if a settings causes this problem. You can press the shortcut again to get back to the user's settings. General questions: Do you know if the ribbons are visible on screen? Do you know which apps are running in the background (anti-virus apps or similar)? Is it possible to test the scenario with another screenreader like NVDA? Hope this helps a little.. Good luck in finding the problem Udo

Hey there, Claudia, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio, feel free to call me BZ, grin! I just retired from the departmetn of defense after 35 years of service. It all depdns on what agency you work for and how seriously they take reasonable accomodation. I first started out with the defense logistics agency and they now do have an excellent section 508 program and a section 508 help desk. They’ve learned a lesson as it took a class action suit from blind employees but they learned a positive lesson from that and now have a great program. I then switched to the defense information systems agency in 1999 and my last year of employment with them I actually worked in their reasonable accomodation division. I’m a firm believer in accentuating the positive and always tried to approach them in a positive manner but when the rubber met the road, the defense information systems agency didn’t want to spend the money necessary to be fully section 508 compliant. I certainly was blessed to work with some awesome folks but in my exit interview before retirement, I told my supervisor that there was far too much we can’t in disa. So your mileage will vary depending upon what federal agency you work for. Let me know if I can be of further assistance, have a great day! BZ!
