Re: Settings, voices, and speech and sound schemes for reading ePubs

That was a helpful video Robin. Thank you. It's interesting to learn how people use the feature. I learned a few things, like having a sound to indicate a checkbox is unchecked. Or having a voice for links. I still have to adjust my speech and sound scheme for pleasure reading. I'm not sure there's more I can do. Maybe have a different voice to announce headings.

Caps lock key in laptop mode
Don Mauck
I’m having an problem with my capslock key not working when using the laptop keyboard layout. This is not anything special as a keyboard, it’s a Dell keyboard. This seems to happen only in JAWS2022 and has been a problem since the last product release. Has anyone seen this?

JAWS didn't speak language when interpreting on Zoom
Gezim Rexha
Hi list,
I was frustrated today in my assignment as an interpreter on Zoom, because as I switched between English and Albanian using ctrl-shift-c, JAWS wouldn’t announce the languages, and I ended up interpreting on wrong channels. I would appreciate your advice.
Cheers, Gezim

Sorry, I meant to include the link to the topic on the Audiogames.net page which had t the download and instructions for the custom keyboard manager file for 'A hero's Call'. As mentioned in my previous email the details can be found in post 1076 and the link is below: https://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=23843&p=44 Paul

Hi, I play various audio games myself and have seen the arrow key issue come up various times for Jaws users, where you can't use the arrow keys whilst Jaws is running. One work around solution if you need to keep jaws running but want access to the arrow keys is to create a special Jaws keyboard manager file for that program, which allows you to set certain keys to be passed through by Jaws but only whilst using that particular game/program. If you've played either 'Manamon' or 'a hero's call' both games used the keyboard manager solution to allow jaws users to play the game whilst running jaws and give access to the arrow keys. it’s a fairly simple procedure, in the 'A Hero's call' topic page on audio games.net in post 1076 the user gives a link to a custom JKM file to get a hero's call working with jaws and instructions on how to use it. You can open the file with notepad to alter which keys are passed through if you want, the name of the file tells jaws which program to use the keyboard manager file with. So the file from the audiogames.net topic is called 'a hero's call', but you could change the name of the file to another game or program to get it to work with that. I've probably made it sound much more complex than it is, really its just a couple of minute job if that. if you decide to use this method and have any questions just let me know and I'll be happy to help or answer questions if I can. Is there a way to either pass certain keys but not others to the application, or is there a way to enable some sort of pass through mode, if you will? Basically so I don't have to press insert 3 etc every time. It's a super niche case I'm making here possibly, the specific use case here is when playing certain games which require the arrow keys. Most of the time this question comes up the stock answer people usually give is to just use NVDA, but I'm more curious if such a thing can be done with JFW On 12/9/21, Steve Nutt <steve@...> wrote: Yep, press JAWS Key and 3, then type in the key. Mike B has already covered one way, but there are several to turn off checkbox selection in File Explorer. From the How To Geek Website:

Hi.
First, what version of Windows are you using?
I had the same problem with Windows 11 and the latest JAWS. I checked folder options, and the option for checked items wasn’t on.
Eventually, I totally turned my laptop off. When I rebooted, the problem was gone. I have no idea if something else happened before that.
Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Hi Jim,
Try the following:
1. From your desktop press enter on the, This PC, icon if you have one, or press, Windows key + E, to take you to This PC. 2. Press, Alt + F, then the letter, O, for folder options, now, Control + Tab, to the, View page / tab. 3. Tab to the, advanced settings tree view, now press the letter, U , until you hear Jaws report, Use checkboxes to select items...., if this is, On, press the spacebar to uncheck / turn it off. 4. Tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close. Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Stay safe & take care. Mike. Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "Close Enough!"

Albert: How do you restart JAWS on your computer. Do you use the Run command or some other method? Then, how do you know that you are then running JAWS 2021 versos JAWS 2022? You may be a victim of the November 9 Windows Update. I’ll send the procedure about this shortly. Best wishes, Curtis Chong

Good morning everyone,
Around a week or so ago, I installed Jaws 2022 and am having a real problem that I don’t know how too remedy. It seems that whenever I press the insert F4 command too turn off the Jaws speech and then resume Jaws speech with control plus alt plus J, Jaws reverts back too Jaws 2021. I know this, because when I go too where it says jaws home manual and do the alt plus a key and check where it says about key, it says that Jaws 2021, and not Jaws 2022 instead. I did call Jaws tech support where we performed a uninstall of Jaws 2021 and did a complete reinstall of Jaws2022, but this problem still exists. I’ve also ran a Jaws repair about three times, but with no resolution.
I’m worried that if I call tech support back with this ongoing issue, I don’t want them too think that I’m some kind of nut job.

Hi,
if the game is self-voicing or uses some kind of TTS on your system, you can put JAWS to sleep. From within the game, press insert+6 on the number row Next, type sleep into the search field, and one of the options is "sleep mode" Turn that on and save the option. If you alt+tab out of the application, JAWS will be there again. Note: If the game did not have a configuration file associated with it previously, there will be a dialogue asking whether or not you want to create a new file with the name of the application in focus at the time already filled in. Good luck, Nermin Am 09.
