moderated Looking For ElBraille E-mail List And Available Tutorials

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I might be in a position to acquire an ELBraille/focus 40 fifth-generation note-taker/Braille Display unit, and am wondering two things:

1.  Is there an ElBraille e-mail list I can subscribe to?  I did a Google search, and found a few possibilities, but am not sure which list is best for the fifth-generation unit.

2.  Does anyone know of good “hands on” ElBraille tutorials?  Once again, I’ve found some ElBraille documentation on the Freedom Scientific web site, but I’m looking for more step-by-step tutorials on setting up the ElBraille, and on the ElBraille’s most important functions.

Since this might be considered slightly off topic, please respond to me privately at:

tombehler@...

Thank you!

Dr.  Tom Behler from Michigan

Hi Señor Justice,

I was able to get a meeting using any version of Jaws older than J2020 that supported tandem I had installed on my computer.

Hi Bill,

What version of Jaws are you using?

I have found that I can not get a connection using Jaws 2020, 2021 and 2022,

using the most recent builds.

Am I the only one experiencing this, or can anyone obtain a meeting ID from JAWS Tandem? When I try, I get a "Cancel" button, and when I tab, I see Meeting ID progress, 0%. Then, 30 seconds later, I get an error message stating that JAWS Tandem could not connect, and an advisement to check my firewall.

Hello,

I don’t think that removing JAWS 2020 would have caused the removal of MaGic from your system.

It is my understanding that Freedom Scientific has stopped supporting or distributing MaGic so if you are needing both screen enlargement your choice is to go with Fusion which combines ZoomText and JAWS in one package or buying Zoom Text as a separate license. It will make more sense to buy a License for Fusion, cost wise.

Good morning Listers: I recently installed J 2022. It is my practice to keep the last 2 versions and remove anything older. So I removed J 2020.

Is it  possible that in removing J 2020 I also removed Magic? Suddenly Magic has disappeared from my system. I have run every search I can think of, and Magic is no where to be found.

Next question is—can I get it back?

Hi Sandra,

Go into the Options menu, the Voices sub-menu, and choose Voice Adjustment.

The last option in that dialogue is Upper Case Pitch change.  It’s an edit box so just delete what’s there and type in a new value.

Cheers,

Ed

Hey, all,

So, making friends with my new computer, I am, of course, sometimes tweaking JAWS settings—David, latest JAWS build, Win. 11. For whatever reason, I don’t seem able to change the capital-letter pitch—I would like it higher than the default. Could someone send thorough instructions? Thx! Doing something wrong, obviously…

Brian, Mike, and anyone else, there are also voice profiles which consists of settings for the synthesizer, language, voice, and other speech items that define how JAWS speaks.

You could go back into the Settings Center while you have the same
application running and change them back to what they were before, if
you remember them.
Or, if you go into the ENU folder of the Jaws version you're running,
file path below:
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2021\Settings\enu
and look for the program you changed the settings of, i.e Word, you
would look for the, Word.JCF file.  If you delete this file this will
put Word back to it's default JAWS settings in the Settings Center.
Any time you modify an application it creates a, JCF, file in the ENU
folder of the particular JAWS version you're running at the time of the
settings change, and any other changes that you make down the road are
reflected in this same JCF file.

Mike,

So, once you've used INSERT + 6 to create application-specific settings,
how are those managed going forward?  And by that I mean particularly
how would you edit those and, just as importantly, how would you delete
them entirely just for one application.

I'd imagine after doing the tweaks these have to be saved under some
name, and are known as some thing (e.g., profile, app specific settings,
etc.)

I have not played with JAWS in a while and never had occasion to deal
with this speci

fic aspect since most of my clients were entirely new to
JAWS and teaching the basics of day-to-day use took precedence over all
else.

Yes, it's called the Settings Center and it's accessed by pressing, Insert + 6, on the number row while in a specific application.  This will make settings changes for only the application you're running when opening the Settings Center.

If the person wanted the changes to be for all programs they would press, control, shift + D, to open the Settings Center default all applications, after invoking the, Insert + 6, keystroke.

The Settings Center can also be accessed by pressing, Insert + F2, to open the, JAWS Manager, then navigating to, Settings Center, and pressing enter.

Doesn't JAWS have something that is the functional equivalent of what NVDA calls a Configuration Profile, where you can tweak settings and then have that profile become active only when you have focus on a specific application window and not elsewhere?
