Hi, Don. While attempting to create the folders with CONTROL, SHIFT, N, do you have an Office application open, and if so, does CONTROL, SHIFT, N work differently when the Office application is closed?

Check to see if you have a desktop shortcut for Note and it has CTRL + SHIFT + N defined as its shortcut.

If you do, Windows itself will always process CTRL + SHIFT + N first, fire up Note, and then focus returns to File Explorer.  This, of course, happens very quickly.

But if you have assigned that key sequence to a desktop shortcut, or somehow otherwise defined it so that Windows has it in its "list of shortcuts I process," it's always going to do whatever it is it's assigned to by Windows.  Windows has first dibs on any keyboard shortcut, your screen reader second, and your application program (and File Explorer is an application) third.

Don,

Then, in the start menu, whether you get to it via searching for it or whether there is a permanent shortcut in the start menu itself, look at the properties for Note.

Somehow, somewhere, something has assigned CTRL + SHIFT + N to make Windows invoke that program.  It is possible, but highly improbable, that this could be the result of a corruption in Windows itself, and they do happen on occasion.

But Windows is never going to fire up a program when a keyboard shortcut is issued unless that shortcut exists in Windows own list of shortcuts I handle.  The most common way of adding to that list is either during the installation of a program or by creating a desktop shortcut and then assigning a keyboard shortcut to that desktop shortcut.

Hi, James. Have you tried uninstalling Chrome completely, then reinstalling it? What I mean by completely uninstalling Chrome is this:

When you uninstall Chrome through either Control Panel>Programs and Features, or via Settings>Apps and Features, Windows leaves behind some folders and files that belong to Google Chrome. If you type into the "Run" dialog the following command,
%userprofile%\AppData\local
and remove the "Google" folder, without the quotes, you can get a completely clean reinstall of Chrome. Perhaps this could solve your Google Chrome intermittent crashing problem.

Hi, David. I didn't think the settings in Edge were as easy to get to as in Chrome, either, because I needed to press a "Main Menu" button, before I could get to the Settings Categories. What I discovered, Though, was that this was because Edge wasn't maximized. When I maximized Edge, I could press ALT plus F, followed by S, and the Settings Categories list was just a tab away, just as in Chrome.

That's not what was said.  Microsoft is retiring, as in completely retiring, Internet Explorer next year.

Anyone who's still depending on IE for anything needs to get away from that, as it's not going to be available much longer.  Less than a year at this point.

What's funny is that in Edge, you can even type chrome://settings and you'll be taken to edge://settings.  The converse is not true in Chrome.
Brave and Vivaldi both follow that "auto-translate" behavior if you happen to enter chrome://settings as well.  ALT + F, S appears to be the de facto standard command to open settings in 3 of the 4 Chromium-based browsers I have on this machine.  Although it should work in Vivaldi, it doesn't, they have their own shortcut mapped, which is CTRL + F12.

Hi Annabelle,

I too have the old real speak voices cd which jaws used to ship with their older versions of jaws, I still use those voices on my windows 64bit system since the ones shipped on cd although only 32bit they could be used with third party software, so I often use those voices when playing audio games since I prefer those voices to the built in Microsoft voices. If you want the new 64bit voices for jaws you can download these   directly from the freedom scientific website, the newer 64bit voices I believe are called ‘Vocaliser voices’. I’ll put the link below, the voices downloaded from their site though can only be used with jaws , but those are the voices I’d recommend you use if you just want to add additional voices to your installation of Jaws.  If you do however specifically  want to use the real speak voices from your cd I do have a modified installer which will let you install them on a 64bit machine, this is a modified version of the installer though so not an official release from jaws  but something just created by a jaws user. Since it uses the voices from  your CD these are still only 32bit voices and are now somewhat old and dated  so they won’t sound as good as the newer vocaliser  voices. If you do want the installer, To avoid breaking any list rules I can send the modified installer but it won’t actually include any   of the real speak voices, so it’s just the modified installation file itself without any voices, therefore you’ll need the actual CD itself to get the voices from, as without the CD the installer won’t do anything as previously mentioned the installation file doesn’t contain any voices at all. anyway, like I said earlier the best thing if you want just the most up to date voices for Jaws is to use the ones from their website, the link to that is below you just need to select the link that is appropriate to your specific version  of Jaws

Hi, it's Annabelle.

I have a CD Rom of Realspeak Solo voices that came with JAWS 4.5, which includes Javier (Latin American Spanish), Tom (American English), Jennifer (American English), Emily (British English), (Daniel (British English), Serena (British English), and Paulina (Latin American Spanish), but I can't get these voices to load into JAWS 2021 in Windows 10, as the disk says they're specifically for 32-bit systems. Is there a CD ROM out there that has 64-bit versions of these SAPI 5 voices?

For some reason, The Close function in the system Menue within a program or programs in the Windows session in which I tried it,  would not work for me. However, after I restarted the computer, the Close function in the System Menue within those programs, now workks in the new Window session.

Hi Curtis and Tony,

To add to Curtis’s excellent questions, one more that might save a little trouble if the answer is no: has your wife maximized the page? To check, press alt-spacebar, release and then arrow up or down through the options. If maximized isn’t grayed out, press the spacebar on it. If it is grayed out, then maximization isn’t the source of the problem.

Hello Tony:

I looked at the page whose link you provided, which was https://sunvalleycc.online.church/. I am running JAWS 2022 with Windows 10 21H1. I have access to the latest versions of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. I also have Mozilla Firefox.

On the page which appears when you activate the above link, none of my browsers will see an edit box when the JAWS command “e” is pressed. However, it is interesting that Forms Mode is automatically turned on. Here are a couple of questions that might help to address the differences in behavior between your and your wife’s computer.

1.            Is there supposed to be an edit box or field on the page which comes up when the above link is activated?

2.            Are you both using the same Web browser? If so, what browser is it?

3.            Are you both running with the same version of JAWS? What version would that be, and if your versions are different, can you tell us what version of JAWS runs on your computer and what version runs on your wife’s system?

4.            What about operating systems? Are you both running Windows 10 or is each one of you using a different operating system? If the latter, can you tell us what operating systems?

What we have here is only some of the information we need to attempt to address your issue.

wWe are having an issue with JAWS and form fields on a website.

We are serving at our church and it's online and using an online

platform that normally works with Jaws.

For some reason, on my wife's laptop computer,  when she goes to press

the leter E to go to the fiorm field, it keeps telling her there are no

form fields on thsi page.

However, when I run the same page on my laptop, I can press ther letter

E to see the form fields and it works properly.

We are wondering if she has a newer version of windows than I do.

What is causing this not to work? On other web pages, she can go to the

edit fields.

Once you are in the System Menu by pressing ALT+SPACE BAR, press the letter R, to restore the current window; M, to move the current Window; S, to size the current Window; N, to minimize the current Window; x, to maximize the current Window; C, to close, although, when you press the letter C, to use this option, nothing seems to happen,

The settings in Edge are not as easy to get to as in Chrome!

I would have to say google chrome, although it's a bit buggy on some computers. IE is still the best accessibility-wise but Microsoft has decided nobody is allowed to use it from next year.

Hi everyone. Thanks Steve, for the tip. I didn't know that. It seems
if I just make sure the site's maximized, it works as it should. I
didn't have to think about that until after a recent windows update,
but a simple fix is nice.
