Another question. Have you used the braille display with Narrator?

Is this the first time you are trying to connect the Focus display via USB?

Have you tried using other USB ports on your computer?

Are you using the supplied cable which has a USB C connector and the other end a standard USB connector.

Have you made the changes for assigning JAWS to the USB port in the Options, Braille Display settings?

We cannot help if you don't provide us as much information about your system and operating system. This is a mistake that many are making when asking questions like yours.

David,

Of course, that can happen.  But I chose the example I did for a reason.  Have you ever known of a screen reader command, and I mean exactly that, which handles text formatting?  I've never encountered one, and with a few moments' thought anyone formulating that sort of question would likely realize it, too.

I do not presume that the members of any of these groups is not capable of pausing, for a moment, and reflecting upon what area their question is likely about.  And in almost all cases it's one of three categories:  The screen reader, Windows, or a given application program.   And it's pretty obvious in the majority of cases which is really being asked about.

The problem is that many don't want to have to think about exactly what it is they're asking about.  That's a problem, and the following quotation gives a clear indication of why:

Most problems precisely defined are already partially solved.

Hi David,
Control B will bold whatever is highlighted, and if nothing is highlighted, I think it will stay bold until you do control B again.
That is not a Jaws command though, it is a word command.

The question, "How do I turn on bold formatting on selected text in MS-Word with JAWS?," is not, in any way, shape, or form, about JAWS.  It's about Word and a keyboard shortcut it uses regardless of whether a screen reader is involved or not.  Ah, however, I’ve lost track of how often I’ve heard the term, “That has nothing to do with JAWS, it is a windows command.â€  I did not know that, so was glad for the correction.  Obviously if I did not know something, I can hardly be faulted.   Smile. No, it's not.  It's the result of not thinking about what you're asking about.

On every screen reader group I've participated in there are members who think that a question about some given piece of software, with the phrase "with {insert screen reader name here}," makes it a screen reader related question.  It isn't.

If you want to know the keyboard shortcuts or other information about an MS-Office program, web browser, media player, and the list goes on and on that's an entirely separate issue from how to use any given screen reader on top of it.   It is incumbent on those asking questions to actually think about what it is, really, the question pertains to.  Tacking on, "with {insert screen reader name here}," doesn't magically make it about the screen reader.  The question, "How do I turn on bold formatting on selected text in MS-Word with JAWS?," is not, in any way, shape, or form, about JAWS.  It's about Word and a keyboard shortcut it uses regardless of whether a screen reader is involved or not.

This list offers many quality, effective, answers.

Don’t compare lists for there are too many variables.  The moderator of this list  does well.

Many lists use auto e-mails for 1st of the month.

Have you noticed the drop off of activity in this discussion list since last week?

Is the Jaws moderated list the place to use for a better quality discussion?

What is the address of that and other pertinent discussion lists?

I know that they have been mentioned in the past, but it now seems necessary to switch to actively moderated lists for better quality answers that are focused on a subject/topic.

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

If you're only running JAWS2022 then you don't need these updates.  But, if you have  either or both JAWS2020 & JAWS2021 installed you need both the earlier versions so they can tandem with JAWS2022.

Hello, everyone.

To clarify, am I correct in saying that those of us who have installed Jaws 2022 do not need to worry about this tandem update?

I ask this because, on one of my Windows 10 computers with Jaws 2022, Tandem is sometimes automatically activated when I re-boot the computer after a complete shutdown.

Hi again, Mike. Please ignore my last message. My mistake! The first update you offered was for JAWS 2020, which I uninstalled. The second is for JAWS 2021, which I applied. I mistakenly thought it was supposed to be an update for JAWS 2022. This JAWS 2021 update was actually released in November, not October.

This is not the October update!  Go to the website and check for yourself, or compare the build of the version of your current J2021 installation against this update.

Hi All,

For those who use the Tandem feature, this update is required if you need to establish a Tandem connection with JAWS or Fusion 2022 or higher.

Below is the download link + what else is new in this release.

J2020.2110.3 32 & 64 bit:

Enhancements in JAWS 2020.2110.3 (November 2021)

For those who use the Tandem feature, this update is required if you need to establish a Tandem connection with JAWS or Fusion 2022 or higher.

To download the latest release, visit the
Downloads web page.
You must be logged on as an administrator to install this software.

Enhancements in JAWS 2020.2012.9 (December 2020)

The following is a list of improvements made between the August 2020 release and the December 2020 update.

list of 15 items
• In the 2020 December Update, we have included a fix that will help users of ZoomText and Fusion in the future when they uninstall that version yet continue
to use later versions. There was a problem in earlier 2020 versions where it was impacting shared components with other versions such as the most recent
release. We encourage anyone who still has the 2020 versions installed, to please update  now even if you are not currently using it.
• Fixed a long-standing issue in File Explorer where JAWS would often not announce the correct number of files in the current folder.
• JAWS now properly reads as expected in Skype when moving focus back to the app without the need to first press ALT and ESC.
• When launching the Skype app included in Windows 10, JAWS now loads the correct settings files.
• While in a Zoom meeting, you can now press CTRL+SHIFT+T to find out who is currently talking. Zoom recently added this option with CTRL+2 but we were
previously using it for a JAWS feature.
• Removed the announcement of Tutor Messages in Microsoft Office Ribbons as they were very verbose when attempting to navigate.
• Resolved an issue when selecting all text (CTRL+A) in  a large Word document. This action would cause JAWS to hang for several seconds.
• Addressed an issue in Word documents where JAWS was not announcing indentation increments when pressing TAB.
• Resolved an issue in Excel where JAWS was not reading the selected item in various combo boxes in the Font dialog box.
• Resolved an issue where JAWS was not reading the Auto  Complete options in the Chrome Address bar.
• Addressed an issue where same page links were not always working as expected in Chrome or Edge Chromium.
• Added five new Japanese voices to the Add/Remove Voices utility, which allows you to sample and download Vocalizer Expressive 2 voices for use with JAWS,
ZoomText, and Fusion.
• Resolved an issue with navigating to the configuration editor in Thunderbird Email when running JAWS or Fusion.
• Addressed reports of JAWS performance issues encountered after accessing the Start menu multiple times.
• Updated braille drivers provided by Papenmeire.

Does anyone know what the "Special Update Code is used for, which is found in the About JAWS screen? When I pressed the button dedicated to the Special Update Code, the only character in the edit box was zero.
