Hey there, Ed, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio, feel free to call me BZ, grin! That’s not the only thing that’s not working in jaws 2022. I ended up notifying vispero technical support that changing apps by file types isn’t working either and it works fine in jaws 2021. They were able to duplicate the issue and generated a ticket so don’t hesitate to get back in touch with them and see if they can reproduce the problem. Have a great weekend! BZ!

I should have mentioned that I can unload Jaws2022 and load Jaws2021 and all Jaws reading keystrokes work as expected in Kindle books. If I switch back to Jaws2022 nothing but Kindle keystrokes work to read a Kindle text. Jaws2022 appears to be broken for reading Kindle books. Re: Synonym searching with JAWS
Adrian Spratt
IN answer to mark’s question, no, JAWS find cannot search for synonyms. The most convenient way I know to find synonyms is to open Google, go into the search field, and type the word synonyms followed by a colon, then a space, then the word. Thus: synonyms: dog
FYI, you could download a program called WordWeb which enables you to focus on a word in your document and get a definition, synonyms, similars, and so on. the information it provides is limited, but often a quick way of getting this kind of information. “Puppy” and other names for dogs might fall under the “similars” category.

Mark, a synonym is a word which means the same as the one you have. The words you mention are not synonyms for dog. A puppy is a young dog and the other words refer to breeds of dog.

You're right Don. Thanks for saying that. I suppose the feature I'm talking about would be better called "find related words". A simplified example could be a user configures JAWS to search for the words login, log in, sign on, sign in, sign up, sign-up, connect, or "go to" when searching for the word "sign in". Each of those variants have different spacing and hyphens but are related in a way the user thinks is meaningful. The user could configure it for other things. Like making a search for the word "hiring" match with words or phrases such as: employment, join our team, opportunities, staffing, hiring, etc. It would be up to the user to decide those related words.

I have installed Jaws 2022 on my computers and have had trouble reading Kindle books on both my desktop and laptop computers. I have been accustomed to reading by using Jaws keystrokes as I would read a Word or other document. Now, however, the only way I can read is to enable “text to speech” in Kindle (Ctrl t) and start or pause reading with the shift-spacebar keystroke. I cannot navigate the text by character, word, sentence, or any of the standard Jaws ways of reading a text. This is occurring in books that I had begun reading prior to installing Jaws 2022 and had been using Jaws keyboard commands to navigate and read the Kindle books. From this description can anyone diagnose something that I am doing wrong? Is this a giant step backwards in reading Kindle content with this version of Jaws? Many thanks in advance for any restorative suggestions. Ed Culpepper

First o fall , when you set up an Outlook.com account in the Outlook desktop client and you enter the user name and password it automatically creates the account and Exchange Active Sync if that is still what Microsoft calls it will be used. It is in my opinion a better protocol than IMAP, but I don't really want to go there because some probably argue it is the other way around.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Anyways, when you say you imported messages, what does this exactly mean? Did you bring messages from another mail account into the new Outlook.com account? You might want to take a look at the account settings, by default Outlook syncs only I believe 3 months or so of messages, but you can adjust this from as little as 1 day to All, if you leave it say at 1 year and you have messages that are older they are not lost, but they won't be synced to your computer. To change this go to File > Account Settings and if there is only one account tab to "Change" and activate it, you will hear: Download email for the past left right slider 11 You would probably hear a lower number because 11 is the value if you want to sync/download all mail, here is what the numbers mean (you can review this with the Jaws cursor): 1 = 1 day 2 = 3 days 3 = 1 week 4 = 2 weeks 5 = 1 month 6 = 3 months 7 = 6 months 8 = 1 year 9 = 2 years 10 = 5 years 11 = All Take care, Sieghard

I created an outlook.com account on Monday and since Tuesday I've had some issues that I'd like fixed. I have a bunch of old messages that I've kept and when I imported everything they were in my inbox, but yesterday I looked and I noticed that the oldest message that was there was from a year ago, but I had ones from 2018, 2019 and earlier in 2020. I also have 5 folders within my inbox and I noticed yesterday that all of the messages that were in one of the folders were gone as well. Any idea what could've happened to all of these messages between when I imported everything and yesterday, and also is there any way I might be able to get them back? Before anyone asks/assumes I didn't delete any of them, if I was going to do that I would've done that before I imported stuff. I don't look at any of these messages regularly, but I kept them just in case I ever needed/wanted to refer back to any of the info in any of them. Now when I imported all of my contacts I got some message saying that they couldn't be imported into this folder (the contacts one in outlook that comes up when you press control 3) so they'd be placed in another folder with the same name and that got put up where the sent and junk folders and those sorts of folders are. So I went into it and I was able to read through my contacts, but I wasn't able to do anything with them, like delete or edit any of them. Any idea why I might've gotten this message and if there's any way that I can get my contacts back into the normal contacts folder so that I can do stuff with them again when I need/want too? Now this account isn't an imap account like my other two accounts are, it's a Microsoft exchange account, I didn't ask for it to be created like this, it's just how it happened, could this explain any of my issues? I'd love to have it be an imap account, but not sure if it's possible to change this and even if it is I don't know how to do it. I'm using the latest versions of Jaws, Office 365 and Windows 10. Really hope there's something that can be done to help me, any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks Madison

Hi Judy,
I don't want to belittle your computer knowledge or accomplishments in your job, but I think it is very important nowadays that if you want to participate fully on social media sites, do the best you can at your job and all in all make your life easier it is more important than ever to continuously educate yourself and especially to learn your screenreader of choice whether that is Jaws or NVDA, inside out. If you do use Jaws as you are, you have a lot of resources at your disposal from the Jaws Command Search if you are trying to do something and can't recall the keyboard shortcut to the Jaws help Topics and the Training section also accessed through Jaws menu > Help and which in turn leads to the Jaws training website, SurfsUp. .
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Judy
Steve, no insult taken on my part here. I was trained by my sighted boss at work years back, who knew enough to teach someone who had never used a computer in their life. I never went through a regular computer training class. That’s why this list is so good, as I am not familiar with the alt down arrow for opening combo boxes. I have picked up more things over the years for sure. Thanks for that update and how you accessed it, and I’m glad you included what you did because there are obviously others having problems who probably are more savvy than I am, and it shouldn’t be so hard. Please let us know ifyou receive a reply from them. Thanks again. Judy & Libby
From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel
Out of curiosity I just signed up for Next Door and while there aren't that many people on there for my small community, there are some and I was able to read their posts, I was also able to start a new message and since I noticed one name of a person I knew I selected him and that worked fine. I also went into the Help section under My Account and after I searched for "Accessibility" and this produced no results I selected the "Contact Us" option. I was then presented with a form where I had to select a category, what my request was about, i.e. Feature request/improvement and then I could fill in my email, name, address, a subject and my message. I was able to access the two combo boxes to select the topic and such without any issues, but I had to use Alt + Down arrow to open them and arrow through the choices since Enter did not work. I just wrote that I am new and visually impaired using a screenreader and that in a recent discussion on a mailing list many people complained about the accessibility of the Next Door website and I then included maybe half a dozen messages from the thread where people were saying how they found accessibility lacking and that some left the platform. As I said, so far I find no major issues, but then of course I haven't done much on the site. I would like to preface my next comment by saying I don't mean to insult anybody, but I do sometimes find that people say a site is not accessible when in fact it is and they just don't know how to leverage the functions of their screenreader to their fullest potential. That does not mean improvements shouldn't be made, but Jaws officially says that Alt _+ Down Arrow opens a combo box and while Enter may work on many, if a combo box only responds to Alt + Down Arrow and somebody doesn't know this it does not make said combo box or webpage inaccessible.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Richard B. McDonald
I had to leave NextDoor a couple of years ago because it became very inaccessible. Prior to that change, it was mostly accessible. This really sucks because it was a fun, useful and important app.

Laurie, thanks, that lets me know it’s not my 2019 jaws, even with the most current it doesn’t work. I can reply to someone else’s message, but that’s all I can do. I guess they care about neighbors as long as they aren’t disabled. It really steams me, something maybe the NFB or ACB can get on. Maybe a law suit would give them inspiration. Judy & Libby

Am I the only one who has noticed that Next Door has become more and more inaccessible. I used to be able to go to the home page, find a link for posting a message, pick the category etc. Now none of the combo boxes work for the purposes of picking your category so it won’t go through. Going to the help section and filling out a contact form is the same thing; none of the combo boxes work to choose topics. Has anyone had any success with this, posting a message etc? Using win 10 and jaws 19. Judy & Libby

Do the one letter thing then go into basic settings and follow the prompts, check start JAWS at login. Funny this because with pretty much every update save 022 I’ve had to set the JAWS to start at login. In essence I’ve had the reverse in what is happening with Dan. To date I’ve had no problems with JAWS 2022, including the migration of the settings, or more specifically, the vocalizer express voices have been migrated at the same time, not the case in prior versions.
