I think that would open up a whole can of worms.  There really should be a list totally dedicated for this.

I’m late to this thread, so sorry if I am repeating things.

ON my Windows 10 system, under Control Panel, Programs and Features, Adobe is listed as: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

Have you tried the Jaws OCR on PDF files that are not accessible?

Are your PDF documents opening in EDGE instead of Acrobat?  That is an issue in the default programs settings.

Other than buying Kindle books and using Codex to convert them to another format, I know of no other reliable web site to get books.  Other than books in audio format like Libro.fm or Audible….

Subject: Jeff Lukacsena: work around for PDF files

Hi List,

First, I tried to download Acrobat Adobe DC. It said the file on my computer was the most recent.

Then I tried to uninstall Adobe Acrobate. I could not find it under programs in the control panel.

Then, I remembered I had a disc for Kurzweil 100. I had to uninstall it a while back to conserve memory, then my Windows had to be reinstall due to not allowing Windows update to run correctly. I called the Microsoft Disability line a couple of weeks ago and they helped me to reinstall Windows 10.

So then I ran the install of Kurzweil, they asked for my serial number, and it’s not on the DVD cover like they used to put that in Braille. So I had to go to my old Dell laptop wait for about 10 minutes to get it to boot, then open Kurzweil over there, and copy the serial number.

Then I got Kurzwel up on my Lenovo laptop and typed in the serial number.

Then I pulled the PDF into Kurzweil and then saved it as a text file.

That took a total of 1.5 hours.

Adobe is on Lenovo, but there is no Save as text, so I will just be using Kurzweil.

Next step is to try and get my Lenovo laptop to recognize my scanner. I have a stack of books that I could not find on Bookshare. Does anyone recommend any other book websites that I can look up books and download them in BRF, Word, or text, EPub, no Kindle.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi, Curtis and Gerald. I don't think much of the Save as Text option in the file menu of Adobe Acrobat DC. On some of my documents, once I convert the pdf to text, each word of the converted text file is on a new line. The pdf did not read this way, with each word on a separate line.

What I do instead is this,

1. Make sure Adobe Acrobat is set to read the entire document.

2. Open the pdf in Adobe Acrobat DC.

3. Once all the text is displayed, press CONTROL plus A to select the entire text.

4. Copy selected text to the clipboard with CONTROL plus C.

5. Close the document.

6. Open a blank text file in Notepad.

7. Paste the text residing on the clipboard into the blank document, and save it.

8. Voila! you have converted your pdf into a readable text file.

There is a Save As button on the file menu. But it only seems to save the files as PDF.

Anyone know how to change this.

Hi All,

Just thought I'd alert folks, and pass this on...

People's Facebook accounts are getting hacked and the hackers will contact their friends posing as your friend, through Messenger letting them know about a grant they received, and that there is an agent who will help you to get a grant too.

One way to find out if it is a hack, You can message the person asking for the answer to a question that only that person would know, that did not come up on FB, like the name of your cat or something, and they will be revealed as the hacker.

I was contacted by the hacker of my sister-in-law's account on this today.

Eventually they get to asking you for your personal information, and that is when I knew it was a scam.

So I looked it up on-line, and I found references to the same scam.

Subject: Has Windows finally developed a screen curtain like Apple has for Voice over

Hi all,
Is there a screen curtain in Windows? If not anyway I can prevent people spoofing in when I type in some personal content?
Thanks

I would try using JAWS to convert the pdf to Word which is a layered command. In other words you are going to OCR the pdf with JAWS.

Subject: Jeff Lukacsena: question on Adobe

Hi List,

I have a quick question on Adobe.

I am able to open PDF, but I cannot seem to save them as text files, so I can edit them.

There is a Save As button on the file menu. But it only seems to save the files as PDF.

Anyone know how to change this.

Thanks,

Jeff

Keep scrolling down past the Save As option, and you will land on a Save As Text option.

Hello Jeff:

In Acrobat Reader DC, there is a save as text button in the file menu. At least, I see that button in the version I am running, which should be the most recent.

Warmly,

Curtis Chong
