Hey Dave.

Nah, Defender just sits there quietly until needed. It should be pretty low maintenance and doesn’t require any subscribing, or really doing anything at all, except maybe letting the odd piece of software it flags when you don’t want it to, pass through.

All that said, and more generally as it pertains to the topic, there are posts here every so often asking for antivirus recommendations, and I wish people wouldn’t just respond with “Windows Defender”. Don’t get me wrong, I use it myself, but I can think of a few reasons why someone might not want to, and if they have Windows nowadays, they already have defender, so theyr’e clearly looking for another alternative. Trust your audience, you know?

For example it would be good to have a scanner that doesn’t rely on being connected to the internet. Defender still works without an internet connection, but it’s been demonstrated that it is much less effective when it can’t communicate with Microsoft.

Anyway, that’s just one that I can think of. So when this question gets asked, which I’m sure will happen again, maybe someone will actuallyc hime in with good third-party products. It seems though that very few in the blind PC users community use anything but Defender.

All of this info is helpful as just a few days ago, MS was telling me my antivirus software was ended and suggested that I renew the subscription at the one time deal of $19.95. I had forgotten about defender.  Since installing it, no prompts to get in on the deal.  Because the audio crashed and no drivers from HP for windows 7, this laptop had to have 10 re-installed on it.  With that I suppose came a 1 year free subscription.  Who knows. Anyway, thanks to Brian for this info

Hi again, Marianne. Another way to reach the thesaurus is,

1. While in a document, and while your cursor is on the word for which you want a synonym or antonym, press the Applications key, or press SHIFT plus F10.

2. Arrow down to Synonym, and press ENTER.

3. A list of synonyms will appear, through which you can arrow and view them.

4. When you find the appropriate synonym, just press ENTER, and the synonym will be inserted into the document, replacing the word which was looked up.

I thought you meant hanging indent.
Use tab if you are just trying to indent for the paragraph.

I've noticed that if you get word into a rhythm, whey you hit enter, the cursor will go to your indented spot on the next line.

Hi

I do tab and this is usually acceptable. However, I have noticed in two or three of my documents the tab is going quite far in till the paragraph. My PA tells me it’s almost scented. I tried yesterday doing FFF1 with help to adjust the margin or tab which was not successful. Oh my documents are default is something 2.5 or three. So not quite sure what my busy little fingers are done to make a mess of some other documents

Tab is the simplest. However, what I do to indent the first line of each paragraph automatically is the following:

Select the entire document with control-a.
Press the applications key (between the right windows and control keys).
Press p for paragraph.
Tab five times until you encounter "By" as a heading.
Arrow up five times until you hear 0.5.
Press enter.

You can make this setting the default for all documents after arriving at 0.5 but before pressing enter by tabbing several times (I think 8) until you arrive at an option to set the default. Press spacebar.

Please post again if this doesn't work for you.

Hello, I’m using the most recent versions of windows10, Outlook 2016 and Jaws 2021. After everything looked to be fixed with the various emails, now I get a message when shutting down saying applications are running. One is Outlook and the other is Jaws. Jaws is okay to leave running. I looked at the task manager and Outlook is running in the back ground. I stop the running by pressing the delete key. I then can shut down. If I go into Outlook again, exit Outlook and then shut down I get the message about it still running. I go back to task manager and it is in the background. I stop it. I then go to the desktop where is the Outlook shortcut and press enter on it. Nothing happens. What would cause Outlook to remain running even though I got out of it by pressing alt f4? Why would it not let me back into Outlook even though I stopped it from running in task manager? Thanks, Kevin

Subject: CRM software

Hello all,

I am needing to consider a CRM software to simply hold my business
contacts, have ability to send one message to many different contacts
other than sending out many same message to many separately. The
ability to have notes regarding communication history to help recall
last call or message other than saving so many emails just to recall where
any discussion is at.
Outlook just isn't proper and with this in mind, Can anyone help me
understand which CRM programs work best with Jaws?

Thank you all,

Rick

All of this info is helpful as just a few days ago, MS was telling me my antivirus software was ended and suggested that I renew the subscription at the one time deal of $19.95. I had forgotten about defender.  Since installing it, no prompts to get in on the deal.  Because the audio crashed and no drivers from HP for windows 7, this laptop had to have 10 re-installed on it.  With that I suppose came a 1 year free subscription.  Who knows. Anyway, thanks to Brian for this info

Hi Paul,

Have you turned on Web Acceleration in the performance heading of Jetpack? It speeds up my site considerably.

All the best

Hi Steve,

We can do this two ways. You can let me know what you use JetPack for and I list the Plugins I am using. Or I could list all the plugins I use, including those that I have found improve the speed and performance of WordPress.

I know they say don’t use too many plugins but I have found a much better performance with several plugins to using JetPack.

Hi Steve and all,

I have found JetPack to be a resource hungry plugin. It will slow your WordPress site down, a lot. I would look at alternatives, as you won’t need most of the features of JetPack.

Hi Rick,

If you have a Wordpress Website, I highly recommend Jetpack CRM. It is currently free for a year I believe, and is very accessible with JAWS.

If not, I don’t know, but I integrated it with my web store.

Actually, Jetpack CRM is fast now on my own site. I simply turned on Web
Acceleration, which uses their CDN (Content Distribution Network) and the
site is quite fast now.

30%-40% was able to be used. JFW was in the early years with windows

distributor with Goldmine, in Toledo, told me they stopped working
with us and told me quite rudely to find another product. I responded
asking him to be clear, his rudeness was heightened and his response
was "I told you to find another product, didn't I?" Maybe I should
have asked for him to define his category of "us" as well lol.

Kevin:

One thing I would certainly check is whether all of the “overhead” vendor-specific software is absent on your laptop. What we usually want is a generic Windows system with none of the product specific stuff which, by the way, is usually not accessible to begin with.

Best wishes,

What is odd, I never had this problem until I got this new laptop. I always closed Outlook by pressing alt f4. Then I could shut down the laptop and never got the message. Is there a way for various programs not go to the system tray?

Hi,

Alt F4 doesn’t close Outlook to my knowledge, it continues to run in the system tray.

I think you’d have to select Exit from the File ribbon.
