Re: Dell laptops freezing or restarting with Jaws
David Diamond
MaxxAudio? What exactly is that? I know there were problems with it, I think however, I don’t know what the problems were exactly. Oh, it has 3 USB ports and a SD slot apparently. This means I will not have to use a USB/SD converter. To think all of this was started because someone was selling a used laptop with 500 G SSD and 16 G RAM for $420.00 Only problem was with the conversion from U S dollars to CAD and the percentage Pay Pal takes and shipping and handling, when the bill came in, it was $685.60. Visa flagged it as fraudulent thus block the payment from going through.

How long has this been going, and when did it start? Also, was there any kind of system change or software install which occurred coincident with the problem arising?
This kind of problem should be taken up with Microsoft’s Disability Answer Desk at 800-936-5900. They seem to be doing a fairly good job these days.

Does anyone know about JAWS and a program called Ear Master Pro?
Jim Portillo
Howdy,
Since this is a list for JAWS users, I thought I’d ask the following. Has anyone heard of a program called Ear Master Pro? It is a music program that has to do with music theory training. There are various classes, exercises, and workshops within the program that one can do. I downloaded the free version to see how well it would work with JAWS. I first tried it using my computer with JAWS, and it did not work at all. This was using the latest JAWS version with Windows 10. My guess is that it is super graphic oriented, which surprises me, since so many of the things it does are related to listening. I then tried it on my iPad and iPhone using VoiceOver, and I got much farther into it and playing demos, but when it was time to do the lessons or exercises, nothing would happen. It would just go back to the home screen. The program and app doesn’t seem to like screen reading software, like JAWS or even Narrator. However, before jumping the gun and complaining to the makers of the software, I thought I’d ask if anyone on the list has used it and if it has worked for you. I do know that visually, there is a lot on the screen, including menus and other things. So, it’s just JAWS that doesn’t read a single thing, except for the title of the program. Thanks much. Jim

Outlook 2010 has been out of support for a long time and needs to be updated. People really have to specify if they use such old software and I for one won't even attempt to reply or help because it's pointless. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it's no different from somebody who is trying to use Jaws 16 or 17 or even Jaws 18 with the latest Windows 10 build. I am actually glad Microsoft is setting such a relatively high standard for Windows 11, hopefully you can't even install things like Office 2007, 2010 or 2013 on such a computer any more and we know people who have a Windows 11 computer will need Jaws 2022 or whatever latest version of NVDA so this should really help in getting people up to speed. Falling or staying behind for so many years is not worth it.

Re: shutting down my laptop with jaws?
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
Actually Windows X and Power Options has nothing at all to do with shutdown options, it simply puts you into the settings for power management like when the computer turns off the screen when plugged in or on battery, when to go to sleep etc.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The Windows Key + X menu has a "Shutdown and Sign Out" menu which was mentioned, Windows Key + X followed by U and it is the same menu you get if you press Windows Key + M and then Alt + F4.

After you tab down to the suggested list and your word is not there, I find I can shift-tab back up to the misspelled word. The focus is at the end of the word. I use insert-left arrow, which places the cursor at the beginning of the misspelled word. I can type the correct word, space once and use ctrl-del to delete the misspelled word. Hit ALT-C to make the change. Spell checker moves on to the next error.

This works fine in short documents, but in a long one, bringing back spellchecker gets cumbersome and time-consuming. Lee Anne’s suggestion is more practical in such cases.
