David,

From what I've seen from JAWS, who finally reported the problem a few weeks ago, not everyone has this problem. If you do have the problem, it's an easy fix. The only thing I don't like about it is that JAWS doesn't sound as good through the laptop's internal speakers after the change in drivers.

Out of curiosity, which Dell are you getting? What is the processor, how much ram, and all of the other usual questions? If you want to know if this is happening, just keep your resource monitor open on the memory tab, and you'll know in a few hours. Your memory usage will clime so fast you can almost count with it.

Just another one that I don't think has been mentioned.

Windows X will get you to a menu, arrow down to Power Options from there
too.

Just another way of skinning that particular cat.

All the best

You press Windows Key or, if you prefer, Control + Escape, then press tab
once and then arrow down to the bottom of that list and you will find Power
which contains the commands to sign out, sleep, restart and shutdown.
But as I said many times, it is much easier to either press Windows Key + M
to minimize to the desktop and then Alt + F4 or Windows Key + X followed by
U both methods get you to the same Power menu.

Hi.

In Windows 10, CTRL+ESC took me to the search box. Hitting DOWN ARROW gave
me a list of all the apps. TABbing didn't take me to a shutdown option.

Hi.

If the laptop has Windows 10 on it, CTRL+ESC  won't bring up a shutdown
menu.

To shut down a Windows 10 laptop, do the following.

Hit WINDOWS+D to get to the desktop.

Press ALT+F4 to get to the shutdown options.

Hope this helps.

Find the Insert key and press F4.

If that doesn't work, press Control + Escape and Tab once and arrow down

Katherine, The first thing I want you to do is to get me your Realtek driver date and version number. I don't want you to remove a driver if something else happens to be the cause of your problem.

Go to your device manager. In the search box in the start menu start to type in device manager. When it pops up, open it. Hit tab once, and then start pressing s until you get down to sound, video, and game controllers. If it's closed, hit the right arrow to open it, and arrow down to Realtek audio. Press Alt Enter on Realtek Audio. Shift tab once, and arrow over to the details tab. Press tab once. Arrow down to driver date. Press tab once, and get me that information. Then press shift tab, arrow down to driver version, press tab, and get me that information.

Yu can either send it to me here or email it to me. I don't have the list sending me emails so I may not get back to it right away. My email is phillip_gross@....

Now all of you have got me worried.  I will be getting a Dell laptop on or before Oct. 5 from Amazon, it’s a windows 10 pro 64 bit laptop. I’m getting it because my upgraded 7 to 10 had to have a complete re-installation because the audio driver stopped working in it and HP said because it was a 7, they don’t make anymore audio drivers for that version anymore.  This was according to the MS help desk that did extensive research on it as well as a tech from another computer department.  I hope I am not buying a brand new laptop with the same problems.
