moderated Display Hidden buttons in Windows Contacts Toolbar

Annabelle Susan Morison

Hi, it's Annabelle.
I'd like to find out, how do you make it so that wab.exe in later versions of Windows shows the "Import" and "Export" buttons on the Contacts Toolbar? I can't seem to get that to happen when I press enter on "Organize" and then enter on "Properties". Is there something that's so hidden it has to be accessed by a professional? Maybe there's some alternative that can convert .contact files between formats like .vcf and .csv. Anybody have any suggestions for me?

Hi, Jaffar. I made a mistake in my last post about installing Java Access Bridge. I will amend my procedure as follows. I typed the last command correctly on the commandline, but I didn't type it correctly in the last email. I should change it as follows,

Hi, Jaffar. I attempted to install the Java runtime environment, 64-bit to enable Java Access Bridge.

I am using,

Microsoft Windows

Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1202)

I am using JAWS,

Home Use Edition

Version 2021.2107.12 ILM

When I run the command,

java -version

I receive the following message,

java version "1.8.0_301"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_301-b09)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.301-b09, mixed mode)

When I then run the command,

jabswitch.exe -enable,

I receive the following message,

'jabswitch.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

operable program or batch file.

From your instructions below, what am I doing wrong?

Hi.  You first need to install the Java runtime environment which you can get from the oracle website.  A search on google will yield you the needed result.  Choose the one for your windows environment, 32 or 64bit.  Install it as you would a normal application or program.  Once installed, go to your command line.

Type the following to see if you got the JRE correctly installed:

java -version

This will tell you if you got the correct version installed.

If it is, then type the following:

jabswitch.exe -enable

You should here the message telling you that the java access bridge has been enabled.  You should then be good to go.  Write me privately if you have any more concerns.  Cheers!

When I load, it refers to problems because Access Bridge is not installed. The error reports this, so Windows is telling SongKong that there is a screen reader.

Is Access Bridge a tool for software developers, a utility for end-users or something else. If I download it, what happens to Jaws? Anything else that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. I haven’t dealt with Access Bridge for a long time, but no one else has responded so here are what I hope will be a few pointers.

Notes for one of the JAWS 19 releases indicates that JAWS has been updated to work with Access Bridge as currently configured.

What I always think of as Java Access Bridge may have changed its name to Windows Access Bridge. Originally developed by Sun Micro Systems, the last I knew, it was owned by Oracle.

Here are some notes I made to myself a few years ago, so they may not be current:

As Mike B suggested, there is a download link. It's hard to find, but this link should take you to the actual download page:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jab-2-0-2-download-354311.html

Note that before the download link is displayed, you must check the box accepting Oracle's license agreement, which appears on that page. Once you've checked it, Oracle will graciously thank you and produce the link. Some arrowing down is required.

Once I clicked on the link, I followed Mike's suggestion of selecting “open” instead of “save.”

To ensure the information is current, maybe Google “Access Bridge,” locate a download link, and install it. It ought to work with JAWS.

Hello Shirley:

I ran a JAWS repair on my system last night, and that did not resolve my Outlook issue.

In your downloads folder, you should see something called J2021.2107.12.400-any.exe. You want to be sure you have this program in that folder before removing anything. If you run the program now, without removing JAWS, a JAWS repair will run. This takes about five minutes to do. Try this first and see if your problem is fixed.

Removing JAWS is a bit trickier. If you remove it, you won’t have a screen reader other than Narrator (unless you have NVDA available to you). If you want to do a really clean removal, you must remove the JAWS shared components as well. Run appwiz.cpl from the Windows Run dialog, find JAWS, and bring up the context menu. Uninstall should be there as an option.

Note none of your other stuff is going to be affected by this.

Best regards,

Curtis Chong

Hello:

When you say unload and reload JAWS, are you talking about removing JAWS from your system and then re-installing the program. If this is indeed the case, you can remove JAWS and then re-install it. This has no effect upon any of the programs you use in Windows.

I myself am experiencing frequent crashes of Outlook which are forcing me to stop and then restart Outlook. I believe this is a problem with how JAWS and Outlook are working (or not working) together. Unfortunately, I’m not able to consistently reproduce the problem so that the folks at Freedom Scientific can reproduce the problem on their end.

Kind regards,

Curtis Chong

Hi Morey

Changing the following setting should resolve your editing issue.
1. Press Alt + F, T to load Options.
2. Press A to select Advanced.
3. Press Alt + E (for Echo) to untick the "Allow editing directly in cells" checkbox.

From now on, you will automatically edit cell contents in the Formula bar when you press F2. It works the same, but you should be able to arrow through content consistently.

All the best.
