JAWS not responsivein Zoom meetings
turab chimthanawala
Hi all,
I am facing the following challenges lately: 1. JAWS does not speak when a person enters/ exits the meeting. 2. Jaws does not effectively read the participants' list. Sometimes, it just doesn't speak at all. At times, before announcing each name, it says, 'press up or down arrow...'. I use JAWS 2021 on Windows 10. Thanks -- Regards, Turab Chimthanawala (ACS, LLM) +91-8087813609 turabhvc@gmail.com

Now: List Rules - 09/01/2021
#cal-notice
main@jfw.groups.io Calendar <noreply@...>
List Rules When: Description: http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies
**List Policies** 1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated. 2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes. 3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject. 4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind. 5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration. 6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently. As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io James,

Re: Focus 40 and Braille

Got it! My focus is older and the keys are different. I did find the spacebar on my student's display.
Apparently the Braille input is dictated by the output, so there is only one input choice, depending on the output. To get to the settingsI needed, I had to go to the advanced Braille settings and work my way back up. Strange. thanks for all the help.

Hi, Mike. Several times, due to changes in the newer version of JAWS, migrating the settings to the new version caused anomalies that made it necessary to completely reinstall the newer version. Nobody knows when this might happen, so many of us simply change the settings manually in the new version, so the migration tool doesn't mess up the new version of JAWS. Now that the new version of JAWS won't have a migration tool, the new version of JAWS will get messed up automatically.

Hi Bill,
Why wouldn’t you want your settings to migrate to the newer version?

I have only 'computer braille' for input under translation, although I have grade II etc. for output.

Typing with Contracted BrailleWith BrailleIn, as you type in contracted braille using the Perkins-style keyboard, your input is immediately translated back as normal text in the current e-mail, document, or form. If an application or specific edit box does not support contracted braille, JAWS announces “Computer Braille” when tutor messages are enabled. Contracted braille input is off by default. To turn it on, do the following:
Note: Contracted Braille Translation can also be turned on or off using the Translation Options (INSERT+V) in those applications where it is available. In Settings Center, under Translation, there are separate options for input and output translation. Mine are both set to U.S. English Grade II. You can of course set them to UEB or whatever else you choose.

JAWS 2022
Bill White
Just a heads up for those who will be purchasing JAWS 2022. There will no longer be a Settings Migration tool. Instead, JAWS 22 will automatically adopt whatever settings you had chosen for your last version of JAWS. I am personally unhappy about this, because I never migrate settings from one JAWS version to another. Here's what the latest FS podcast says about avoiding that problem.
If you had a previous version, and it adopted those settings, and you’d rather start clean, or you’d rather import some other settings that you’ve saved someplace else, you go to the Options menu. You choose Restore Factory Defaults. It’ll ask you are you sure you want to do this? You accept it. And your settings will be wiped out. I think JAWS will actually restart, and you’ll get the Startup Wizard just like you had just done a clean install with no adoption of settings. So at that point you can do whatever you like.

This is a 7th Gen I3 CPU, but as it's an I3 meaning a low-end Intel CPU it may not be compatible. In addition to the processor requirement you also have to check if your BIOS has SecureBoost and whether it is enabled and whether your system has a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and that it is Version 2.0. The Secure Boost setting you can find in System Information and the TPM module information you can check either by typing tpm.msc into the Run dialogue or, a bit easier, by going to Device Manager and them look for "Security Devices", expand it and see what it says, it should say "Trusted Platform Module 2.0". Apart from that either run the new PC Health Check tool if available yet or just wait and see whether Windows 11 is offered to you in October or November.

Accessing place markers in PDFs
Rahul Bajaj
Hi,
My understanding is that the best way to make notes in a PDF documents as you read is by inserting well-chosen placemarkers. However, the problem that I am facing is that I am not able to get to previously inserted place markers easily. When I press control+shift+k, a list of place markers opens up. But there is no way to actually go to the text on which a given place marker has been positioned from that list, as far as I can tell. K and shift+k also do nothing for me. I use JAWS 2021. Re: need help with a groups.io account
As far as setting a password, see these two tutorials:
Establishing a Groups.io Website Account Password If You’ve Been an E-Mail Only User (docx) Changing the Email Address for Your Groups.io Account (docx)You also need to have a look through the Groups.io Owner's Manual. That covers almost every aspect of moderation you could imagine. To answer your specific question, under the Admin section the Group Owners/Moderators see when browsing their groups with the web interface, there is a section entitled "Spam Control." if you activate the control for that section, under it is an checkbox, New Members Moderated, which is checked by default immediately followed by a dropdown box for, Unmoderate after, which allows you to chose Not Enabled as well as any number of messages between 1 and 4. The default selection is 1 Message. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is the function of creative men to perceive the relations between thoughts, or things, or forms of expression that may seem utterly different, and to be able to combine them into some new forms--the power to connect the seemingly unconnected. ~ William Plomer
