Greetings:

It is impossible to answer this question without more specific information.
Blind people have been using Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Outlook, Excel,
and PowerPoint) for decades. Yes, there are a few bumps in the road, but
there is a veritable plethora of training materials for someone who has
never worked with Office before. Anyone who is seeking to be successful in a
job should know Office products well enough to be able to adapt to an
employer's situation. For example, in my last two jobs, I was expected to be
proficient with both Outlook and Microsoft Word. I was also expected to be
able to proficiently work with web browsing software (at that time, Internet
Explorer).

If the student has some experience with Office, this should not pose a huge
issue. How is it that in your experience, you think that Microsoft Office is
messy?

Kindly,

Curtis Chong

Ann, I'm sorry, but Office 365 is, for the most part, the same as Office has been since Office 2016.

If the student is transitioning from any version older than, I'd say, 2013 then there will be aspects that are new to them.  But, even then, the most common things have used the same keyboard shortcuts for decades now.  It's additional bells and whistles that are available, and a very few keyboard shortcuts were supplanted.

If they are having to use it online; good luck. Perhaps calling Microsoft accessibility.
If they have an option to install the programs on their local drive, it is fine.
Or, perhaps FS support could help with the settings for online usage.

That is quite a coincidence. One of us must have been due some good karma. Oh that only I could have such positive results when using the correct hotkeys all the time.

Hello Alan:

There is a JAWS command you can use to virtualize the window. This is Alt plus Insert plus w. Then, the up or down arrow keys can be used to read the window. Works well on my system.

Also, let us not forget the JAWS command Alt plus Delete. This tells you the position of the cursor (in terms of inches from the left and top) on a printed page and the page number.

I believe Microsoft must have changed the presentation of this information in a recent upgrade. While Insert  + PageDown hasn’t been reading the status bar info to me for a while, I’ve been able to get word count and other Microsoft Word document info by pressing Ctrl + shift + g no longer than a few weeks ago. Now, when I press this shortcut, a Word count dialog appears on the screen but Fusion no longer reads what it contains. I have to pass my cursor over the lines to get the info spoken. I’m running Fusion 2020 with Word 2019.

There is a checkbox setting at the bottom of the Word count dialog to include textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes and this is the only thing that Fusion reads when I try arrowing through the dialog. None of the actual count info is read.

Hi Loreal,

Try the following:

The insert key with the page down (3) key on the number pad can give you the info.  The page number should already be showing on the status bar but you
can add column and line number.  Move focus to the status bar by using function key 6.  Press the application key or Shift + F10 and use down arrow in the menu.  You
should find Column and Line Number and you can press enter key on each of those to check them if you want those items to show on the status bar along with
page number.  Press escape after checking the items you want.  Using the insert with number pad 3 should then read you all three of those items you mentioned.

Richard,

Thanks for this suggestion. When I pressed alt + 4, an optimize spacing between commands setting opened in Word 2019 with a choice between Mouse and Touch. I selected Touch and now when I press ctrl + shift + g in a word document, the word count dialog is read by Fusion in its entirety.

Try, alt+4, followed by w.

You get this in an empty document:

Word Count dialog‑
Statistics:
Pages
1
Words
0
Characters (no spaces)
0
Characters (with spaces)
0
Paragraphs
0
Lines
0
Close Button‑

I get the same thing with control+shift+g.

But, this does not tell you where you are in the document line the status line should.

For some time the Jaws shortcut key has not told me how many words in my document. It tells me where I am in the document, i.e. which line and which page and if I press the shortcut at the end of the document, whether it has any spelling errors, but if I want to know how many words, then I have to press f6 and tab three times.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.

Hi, Cynthia. To stop the announcement of “to move to an item press the arrow keys”,

1. Bring up JAWS>Options>Basics.

2. Change the setting from

Tutor Messages Announce menu and control help radio button‑ checked‑

to

Tutor Messages Turn off menu and control help radio button‑ checked‑

3. TAB to the OK button, and press Space or Enter.

4. This should fix the problem without having to change the verbocity levels.

It sounds like your verbosity level is on beginner.

You can change this by pressing insert+6 on the number row.

Search for speech verbosity.

Arrow down and press space on speech verbosity.  That should toggle you through the different settings.

I like Jaws to say as little as possible so I keep mine on advanced.

Most keyboards are typically cheap and have a lifespan of a couple of years before they do strange things so if you use a basic USB keyboard it's a good idea to always have a spare around or invest in something higher end like a Das Keyboard wired mechanical keyboard, they cost around $160 US I think but in my opinion are worth it. Another good one is the Logitech K780 which is a wireless keyboard. It comes with a USB dongle for use with a PC or laptop but also can be paired to two additional devices via Bluetooth. I highly discourage people to use the Bluetooth connection with a PC, the USB dongle is way more responsive. I have had mine for at least 2 or maybe even 3 years and it's still doing good.

When running a search through Google with Chrome, I have found that it helps to press the plus key on the number pad to verify the virtual cursor is actually on. If I hear JAWS say PC cursor, I have to press tab once. Why this happens is a mystery to me, but if I use this approach, I get focus on the web page so that JAWS can interpret it sooner.

i,

I use JAWS 2021, Chrome version 92, ending with 131. I have been recently facing the following issue.

On Google, when I put in a search request, on the search results page, the list of results entirely disappears after a few seconds. As in, I get the full list of results initially, and then it vanishes for JAWS, even though I am told sighted folk can see it there. For me, it says about so-and-so results, search results, and then directly related searches.

This has only been happening for a couple of days. Any thoughts?

Kindly,

For some time the Jaws shortcut key has not told me how many words in my document. It tells me where I am in the document, i.e. which line and which page and if I press the shortcut at the end of the document, whether it has any spelling errors, but if I want to know how many words, then I have to press f6 and tab three times.

I contacted JAWS Tech Support today.  Best advice I got was to just use the F-6 key and read through all the info I wanted there instead of using a keystroke I’ve used for the past 21 years.  Oh well.

Greetings:

One option, time-consuming as it is, is to contact Microsoft’s Disability Answer Desk, Office Support. I am running Microsoft 365 with the latest JAWS on Windows 10. I am not experiencing the same problem.

This one is difficult to troubleshoot from a distance.😊

Warmly,

Curtis Chong

Yes, the window is maximized.  I’ve tried it with multiple documents, but with the same results.

Is the window maximized?

Hey Mike,

So I did what you suggested and it seemed to work momentarily.  I restarted my computer, reopened the document I was working in, and pressed the JAWS key plus page down to read the status line.  It just says “Navigation.”  I checked the status line and made sure the things I wanted read were checked, and they are.  But it won’t read the status line with the keyboard shortcut.  Any suggestions?  For reference, I’m using a Windows 10 Professional 64-bit edition, with MS Office 365 Home and JAWS Professional 2021 with all updates up-to-date and installed.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

I know I asked some months ago, but I’ve since upgraded everything on my laptop and cannot find this information.  I want to edit what is spoken in the status line when the JAWS key plus Page Down is pressed.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Not that I think this can be solved on the list, but what programs do you have open when this happens?

Is it a situation you can duplicate reliably?

Perhaps asking FS to tandem in with you so they could see it happen?

Hello Fellow Listerrs,

I have been very busy with school and haven’t kept up with the list; however, I have been having a reoccurring problem of JAWS going silent but it is still loaded. I have to turn on narrator and exit out of JAWS and then restart JAWS. I am not sure if thread has been posted before, but if it has please redirect me.

Thx,
