Re: Editing the status line in Word with JAWS
Richard,
Thanks for this suggestion. When I pressed alt + 4, an optimize spacing between commands setting opened in Word 2019 with a choice between Mouse and Touch. I selected Touch and now when I press ctrl + shift + g in a word document, the word count dialog is read by Fusion in its entirety.

Try, alt+4, followed by w.
You get this in an empty document: Word Count dialog‑
I get the same thing with control+shift+g.
But, this does not tell you where you are in the document line the status line should.

I believe Microsoft must have changed the presentation of this information in a recent upgrade. While Insert + PageDown hasn’t been reading the status bar info to me for a while, I’ve been able to get word count and other Microsoft Word document info by pressing Ctrl + shift + g no longer than a few weeks ago. Now, when I press this shortcut, a Word count dialog appears on the screen but Fusion no longer reads what it contains. I have to pass my cursor over the lines to get the info spoken. I’m running Fusion 2020 with Word 2019.
There is a checkbox setting at the bottom of the Word count dialog to include textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes and this is the only thing that Fusion reads when I try arrowing through the dialog. None of the actual count info is read.

For some time the Jaws shortcut key has not told me how many words in my document. It tells me where I am in the document, i.e. which line and which page and if I press the shortcut at the end of the document, whether it has any spelling errors, but if I want to know how many words, then I have to press f6 and tab three times. Hi, Cynthia. To stop the announcement of “to move to an item press the arrow keys”,
1. Bring up JAWS>Options>Basics. 2. Change the setting from
Tutor Messages Announce menu and control help radio button‑ checked‑
to
Tutor Messages Turn off menu and control help radio button‑ checked‑
3. TAB to the OK button, and press Space or Enter. 4. This should fix the problem without having to change the verbocity levels.

It sounds like your verbosity level is on beginner. You can change this by pressing insert+6 on the number row. Search for speech verbosity. Arrow down and press space on speech verbosity. That should toggle you through the different settings. I like Jaws to say as little as possible so I keep mine on advanced. HTH,

Most keyboards are typically cheap and have a lifespan of a couple of years before they do strange things so if you use a basic USB keyboard it's a good idea to always have a spare around or invest in something higher end like a Das Keyboard wired mechanical keyboard, they cost around $160 US I think but in my opinion are worth it. Another good one is the Logitech K780 which is a wireless keyboard. It comes with a USB dongle for use with a PC or laptop but also can be paired to two additional devices via Bluetooth. I highly discourage people to use the Bluetooth connection with a PC, the USB dongle is way more responsive. I have had mine for at least 2 or maybe even 3 years and it's still doing good.

Hello Alan:
There is a JAWS command you can use to virtualize the window. This is Alt plus Insert plus w. Then, the up or down arrow keys can be used to read the window. Works well on my system.
Also, let us not forget the JAWS command Alt plus Delete. This tells you the position of the cursor (in terms of inches from the left and top) on a printed page and the page number.
Kindly,

Greetings:
I just updated my Microsoft 365 version to Version 16.0.14228.20248. The changes I make to the status bar are still holding. My version of JAWS is 2021.2107.12, the latest publicly available.
This technology stuff is fascinating and sometimes quite vexing.😉

Curtis Chong

I am running Microsoft Word Subscription Version 16.0.14228.20226, notice my version ends in 26 while yours ends in 16. I wonder if Loreal is running the same one as me. Loreal, if you don’t know how to get the version number of Word with Jaws, open word and press insert+control+v
This is possibly the issue.
A certain place might freeze over before Microsoft would take responsibility for this, but I’ll drop a note to FS to see if they can duplicate it with this version of Word.

Hello Richard:
In my version of Microsoft 365, 16.0.14228.20216, the settings for adding or removing something from the status bar are holding between successive iterations of Word. Why the behavior on my system is different than what you are experiencing is a mystery.
Kind regards,
Curtis Chong

Loreal stated in one of her earliest emails in the thread that she is using Microsoft 365 and Jaws pro 2021 all updated….
I am running Jaws Home, but otherwise have the same setup.
I’m finding that doing the steps of f6 to Status bar, applications key and checking something like Word count, only works for that particular session. Once I close word and relaunch it, the Word Count item is still checked when I hit f6 and get to status bar, but the Jaws key plus page down does not read it unless I uncheck and check it again.
This is clearly one of Jaws’ most stupid issues in my very biased opinion. Why adding more options for some of you isn’t behaving the same way, makes it next to impossible for FS to duplicate and therefore fix it, but it is rather frustrating. I suspect especially so for Loreal since this impacts her job.
I have had other issues like this and the problem was fixed, apparently unintentionally, in a later Jaws update. Even after Eric Damery remoted into my machine and saw the behavior I was dealing with about 18 months ago they could not fix it. Yet, that issue has gone away…
Fingers crossed this will happily vanish soon.

I am also wondering if the version of Office you are running is the Microsoft 365 version, the retail version, or a version which was acquired through the Microsoft Store. Some of the folks with whom I have worked have inadvertently picked up the store version, and when I checked with Freedom Scientific, I was told that Store version (as differentiated from the subscription version) is not the one we should be using. This is just an off-the-wall question which may or may not get at the heart of this vexing issue.

I just updated and am now running the same version as you. Still, no go on adding Word count. It only works for the current session.

Hi,
You can also find this out with Control+Insert+V, which in my case, says Subscription Version.

As in, I get the full list of results initially, and then it vanishes for JAWS, even though I am told sighted folk can see it there. For me, it says about so-and-so results, search results, and then directly related searches. This has only been happening for a couple of days. Any thoughts?
