Hi,

You can also find this out with Control+Insert+V, which in my case, says Subscription Version.

All the best

Greetings:

I am also wondering if the version of Office you are running is the Microsoft 365 version, the retail version, or a version which was acquired through the Microsoft Store. Some of the folks with whom I have worked have inadvertently picked up the store version, and when I checked with Freedom Scientific, I was told that Store version (as differentiated from the subscription version) is not the one we should be using. This is just an off-the-wall question which may or may not get at the heart of this vexing issue.

After opening the document, have you tried to switch windows with, Alt + tab, to see if the document might be opening in another window?

Hi Loreal,

Try the following:

The insert key with the page down (3) key on the number pad can give you the info.  The page number should already be showing on the status bar but you
can add column and line number.  Move focus to the status bar by using function key 6.  Press the application key or Shift + F10 and use down arrow in the menu.  You
should find Column and Line Number and you can press enter key on each of those to check them if you want those items to show on the status bar along with
page number.  Press escape after checking the items you want.  Using the insert with number pad 3 should then read you all three of those items you mentioned.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.

Yes, I've seen that one too, on many websites, not just search.

You load a page, then have to press tab before the virtual cursor comes on.

Greetings:

When running a search through Google with Chrome, I have found that it helps to press the plus key on the number pad to verify the virtual cursor is actually on. If I hear JAWS say PC cursor, I have to press tab once. Why this happens is a mystery to me, but if I use this approach, I get focus on the web page so that JAWS can interpret it sooner.

Subject: Strange issue with JAWS and Chrome

i,

I use JAWS 2021, Chrome version 92, ending with 131. I have been recently facing the following issue.

On Google, when I put in a search request, on the search results page, the list of results entirely disappears after a few seconds. As in, I get the full list of results initially, and then it vanishes for JAWS, even though I am told sighted folk can see it there. For me, it says about so-and-so results, search results, and then directly related searches.

This has only been happening for a couple of days. Any thoughts?

Those updates seem to come out on a rolling basis. Some people can get them right away. I’m not sure even how current what I have really is in the greater scheme of things.

Loreal stated in one of her earliest emails in the thread that she is using Microsoft 365 and Jaws pro 2021 all updated….

I am running Jaws Home, but otherwise have the same setup.

I’m finding that doing the steps of f6 to Status bar, applications key and checking something like Word count, only works for that particular session.

Once I close word and relaunch it, the Word Count item is still checked when I hit f6 and get to status bar, but the Jaws key plus page down does not read it unless I uncheck and check it again.

This is clearly one of Jaws’ most stupid issues in my very biased opinion.  Why adding more options for some of you isn’t behaving the same way, makes it next to impossible for FS to duplicate and therefore fix it, but it is rather frustrating.  I suspect especially so for Loreal since this impacts her job.

I have had other issues like this and the problem was fixed, apparently unintentionally, in a later Jaws update.  Even after Eric Damery remoted into my machine and saw the behavior I was dealing with about 18 months ago they could not fix it.  Yet, that issue has gone away…

Fingers crossed this will happily vanish soon.

In my version of Microsoft 365, 16.0.14228.20216, the settings for adding or removing something from the status bar are holding between successive iterations of Word. Why the behavior on my system is different than what you are experiencing is a mystery.

Mike.

I am running Microsoft Word Subscription Version 16.0.14228.20226, notice my version ends in 26 while yours ends in 16.

I wonder if Loreal is running the same one as me.

Loreal, if you don’t know how to get the version number of Word with Jaws, open word and press insert+control+v

This is possibly the issue.

A certain place might freeze over before Microsoft would take responsibility for this, but I’ll drop a note to FS to see if they can duplicate it with this version of Word.

Some of the folks with whom I have worked have inadvertently picked up the store version, and when I checked with Freedom Scientific, I was told that Store version (as differentiated from the subscription version) is not the one we should be using. This is just an off-the-wall question which may or may not get at the heart of this vexing issue.

Kind regards,

Curtis Chong

Mike.

Hi Michelle.

Looks to me that you're not doing the command right. You want to do dots 128
chord all at the same time, then whatever is for F3, either the letter C or
a dropped C, I can't remember. The key to get it to work is you issue all
the special key commands at once.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know.

hi there,

Michelle Stevens here,

when in html document the command is insert f3 to get list of html commands.

On the braille display cannot get this to work. I am pressing dot8 spacebar
dot 2 for insert then dot8 spacebar dot 1 function and dots 1 3 for 3.

Is this a problem others have experienced?

Any help much appreciated.

For some time the Jaws shortcut key has not told me how many words in my document. It tells me where I am in the document, i.e. which line and which page and if I press the shortcut at the end of the document, whether it has any spelling errors, but if I want to know how many words, then I have to press f6 and tab three times.

Hello Fellow Listerrs,

I have been very busy with school and haven’t kept up with the list; however, I have been having a reoccurring problem of JAWS going silent but it is still loaded. I have to turn on narrator and exit out of JAWS and then restart JAWS. I am not sure if thread has been posted before, but if it has please redirect me.

Hi, Moti. Did you check to see if there is a mute button by the video? Also, sometimes you need to go into Site Settings, and change the site's sound setting from Automatic to Allow, then add the site to Site Settings.

Hi,

I USE WIN10 WITH THE LATEST UPDATE.

I use, brave, Google Chrome, Microsoft edge and Firefox.

All are up to date.

For two weeks – I cannot hear any sound when I open any video.

Only Youtube is still working properly but not the other vidios that I open.

I checked the system sound and all is okay in my opinion.

Any help please.

That’s somewhat true about the number pad, and it is a bit of a nuissance, coming from a JAWS user’s initial perspective.

When I think of JAWS and NVDA commands-in-common, certainly the time command is not one that quickly springs to mind, but a lot of other ones, like “say all”, keyboard echo (although this does work differently in nvda as well), all the commands for generating element lists and such (though those work a little differently, too), quick navigation and more.

Not necessarilyt he most helpfult hings to think just of the commands, though, anyway – moreso, think about how they function in the various screen-reader options.

– it does depend

I would only somewhat agree.

NVDA has only a couple keystrokes like Jaws, like the time command.

Probably what makes folks think they have a lot in common, is that the majority of the keystrokes we use are windows keyboard commands, not Jaws or NVDA.

But although I sometimes use NVDA, I find the screen review lacking, or perhaps I'm lacking in how to use NVDA.

I have asked on the NVDA list where the developers subscribe too, about making NVDA with a Jaws keyboard selection, because if you are used to reviewing a window with Jaws, and try to use NVDA the same way, it will be frustrating.

In NVDA, they say that the keys can be mapped, but this hasn't worked for me.

Jaws is really using the most intuitive keyboard layout.

I think it is not just my opinion, as the keyboards with a number pad also have arrows on the number pad indicating direction of movement, which does not relate to the way NVDA uses the number pad.

But until that changes in NVDA, it will always be only a backup screenreader for me.

IN my opinion, no one can say how hard it is to learn anything because they are not you.

NVDA has many keystrokes in common with Jaws.

I’d start by browsing through the Commands quick reference:

NVDA 2021.1 Commands Quick Reference

When NVDA is running, press insert+n and arrow down to help and right arrow and you can find that list plus the user guide.  Two great places to start.

Hello I have used Jaws for about 20 years how hard is it to learn NVDA and where should I start?
