Re: Skype?
Curtis Chong
Greetings:
I am running the latest version of JAWS. Information from JAWS Help is shown here below.
According to the information:
“When downloading Skype, make sure to choose the link to get Skype for Windows, as this works for all Windows versions. There is also a Skype for Windows 10 which is a universal app as well as a Skype for Business. However, both of these apps do not work as well with JAWS at this time.”

SkypeThis topic provides a brief overview of using JAWS with the Skype for Desktop application version 8.42 and later. Skype allows you to make and receive audio and video calls as well as exchange instant messages with other users. For detailed information on using Skype and all of its features, visit the Skype website. This site also contains a complete list of hotkeys for Skype. You can also press INSERT+W to view a list of Skype keystrokes. When downloading Skype, make sure to choose the link to get Skype for Windows, as this works for all Windows versions. There is also a Skype for Windows 10 which is a universal app as well as a Skype for Business. However, both of these apps do not work as well with JAWS at this time. Answering and Ending a CallWhen Skype alerts you to an incoming call, JAWS automatically speaks the caller information if the Skype window is in focus. The notification is also shown on the braille display as a flash message. You can also press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+R to repeat the incoming call notification. To answer an incoming call, perform the layered command INSERT+SPACEBAR, Y followed by UP ARROW or A. You can use these keystrokes from any application once Skype alerts you that someone is calling. Alternatively, use the layered command INSERT+SPACEBAR, Y followed by S to place focus in the Skype window and then press the Skype command CTRL+SHIFT+P or press TAB to move to the Answer or Decline buttons and press ENTER. If your computer has a webcam, you can press the Skype command CTRL+SHIFT+K to answer a call with video when the Skype window is in focus. To hang up once you are finished with a call, perform the layered command INSERT+SPACEBAR, Y followed by DOWN ARROW or D. Just like answering a call, you can use these keystrokes from any application. Alternatively, use the layered command INSERT+SPACEBAR, Y followed by S to place focus in the Skype window and then press the Skype command CTRL+E. Instant MessagingIf you are typing messages back and forth with another Skype user, JAWS automatically announces incoming messages as they are received if focus is in the Skype window. Incoming messages are also shown on the braille display as a flash message. To repeat the last background message, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+R. JAWS also provides additional keystrokes for use in conversations. To review previous messages in the current conversation, press CTRL+INSERT+Y to move to the chat history list. Alternatively, you can move to the chat history using the layered keystrokes INSERT+SPACEBAR, Q followed by H. Use the UP or DOWN ARROWS to navigate the list of messages. In an active conversation, press CTRL+INSERT+E to move to the chat entry field so you can begin typing a new message. Alternatively, you can move to the chat entry field using the layered keystrokes INSERT+SPACEBAR, Q followed by E. To switch to a different conversation, press CTRL+INSERT+N to move to the conversations list. Alternatively, you can move to the conversations list using the layered keystrokes INSERT+SPACEBAR, Q followed by C.

To the best of my knowledge, Skype 8 is best supported by recent versions of JAWS.
Note that it is being superseded by Microsoft Teams - including Microsoft Teams personal. Skype is on the way out.

Re: Editing the status line in Word with JAWS

Hey Mike,
So I did what you suggested and it seemed to work momentarily. I restarted my computer, reopened the document I was working in, and pressed the JAWS key plus page down to read the status line. It just says “Navigation.” I checked the status line and made sure the things I wanted read were checked, and they are. But it won’t read the status line with the keyboard shortcut. Any suggestions? For reference, I’m using a Windows 10 Professional 64-bit edition, with MS Office 365 Home and JAWS Professional 2021 with all updates up-to-date and installed.

Re: groups.io question
Also, members can change their own display names, and that is what I have them do. The Groups.io Members Manual gives the steps to do this.
Direct them to this section, Setting Account preferences and viewing account information, then to look for Customizing your Groups.io account profile and individual group profiles. Instructions on how to change display name are included there. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is the function of creative men to perceive the relations between thoughts, or things, or forms of expression that may seem utterly different, and to be able to combine them into some new forms--the power to connect the seemingly unconnected. ~ William Plomer

Hi, Judy. Can you give me the URL for the International church site? If I can duplicate the problem, I may be able to tell you how to find the English section. Also, What browser are you using?

Hi, all, today I was on a website for an international church, and when I went to open a link for the latest sermon, jaws said, “read in English, French” and then it was gone. I couldn’t find anything like that on the website to choose English, and I tried alt N to see if that opened up options but that didn’t work. I have a similar problem when I type in my password on a site and it asks if I want to save it but then it’s gone and I can’t figure out the keystroke to bring up that option. Hope this all makes sense. Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

groups.io question
Madison Martin
Hi all,
Is there anyone on hear who owns/moderates a group on groups.io? Can anyone tell me how to change a group member's display name? A group member asked me to do this, but I'm not sure how to do it. Using latest versions of Firefox, Jaws and Windows 10. Thanks Madison

Judy,
You can try F6 to get you to the password save tool
bar.
I think alt S when the dialog pops up saves it
too.
I don't think this will help with the language
option though.

Re: Editing the status line in Word with JAWS
Mike B.
Hi Loreal,
Try the following:
The insert key with the page down (3) key on the number pad can give you the info. The page number should already be showing on the status bar but you can add column and line number. Move focus to the status bar by using function key 6. Press the application key or Shift + F10 and use down arrow in the menu. You should find Column and Line Number and you can press enter key on each of those to check them if you want those items to show on the status bar along with page number. Press escape after checking the items you want. Using the insert with number pad 3 should then read you all three of those items you mentioned. Stay safe & take care. Mike. Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "Close Enough!"

When running a search through Google with Chrome, I have found that it helps to press the plus key on the number pad to verify the virtual cursor is actually on. If I hear JAWS say PC cursor, I have to press tab once. Why this happens is a mystery to me, but if I use this approach, I get focus on the web page so that JAWS can interpret it sooner. Hi, Rahul. I suspect that Chrome is using some sort of search filter, based on your past browsing history, and that your results are being sorted accordingly. Here's what I would try first.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
1. Open Chrome. 2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus DELETE to enter your history. 3. Delete the items in the following categories in history, using All Time as the range, Browsing history Download history Cookies and other site data Cached images and files Autofill form data I would not delete passwords and sign in data. It is up to you whether or not you wish to delete Site Settings. You can always reconfigure these later if you think something there might be interfering with your google search. That is quite true of any new dialog box.- Joseph Lee once used the term information blackout to describe the idea that any screen reader user cannot ever experience any window, dialog, etc., as a gestalt like one does when seeing it. And it's true, since a screen reader can only focus on an element at a time during the most typical forms of navigation. You can't take it all in at once. But, and it's a critical but, screen reader users who don't know about this need to, and need to know about the necessity of actually reviewing new windows, dialogs, whatever, in their entirety if they wish to know everything that it contains. Mind you, I'm not insane enough to say this must happen each and every time you happen to "be passing through" on something that's neither of great import nor that you expect to use again. But the PDF dialog, given the context of the original question and the information being sought, is a perfect example where reviewing it, in its entirety, using the method(s) your screen reader gives you, is necessary to know everything it says, at least for a given screen reader. There is a difference in what NVDA and JAWS announce by default based on the layout of that particular dialog. And in this case, it takes a bit more cajoling to get all the information that NVDA gives by default, which is complete, from JAWS. There are plenty of instances I can recall where the reverse is true, so this is not an insult aimed toward JAWS. And in any instance, when someone using another screen reader than you routinely do reports that they're getting more information than you are in a specific context, that clearly indicates that your chosen screen reader is, for this context, "missing something" unless you force it to reveal it, if you can force it to reveal it, and you generally can.

Bill, That is quite true of any new dialog box. I find the same if exploring the File Properties dialog If it’s a new box to me, I’d most likely think it appropriate to insert insert B or to virtualize the window to get a sense of all that is there.

Hi, Richard. The problem isn't that the information isn't available. The problem is that, if one is unfamiliar with this particular dialog box, and one doesn't know that this information is there, it is easily missed, since one can't arrow out of the edit box to see that there is more information there than just the edit box.

After control+shift+n I just press insert+b to read the dialog and get the information about page x of x plus the OK, cancel etc. But quite simple.

Correction On JAWS Not Speaking Zoom Joins and Leaves
Steve Matzura
Turns out, my reported problem the other day of not hearing JAWS speak Zoom meeting joins and leaves was incomplete. I also don't hear host and cohost messages, like people entering and leaving the Waiting Room. However, if I am not focused in the Zoom Meeting window, I do hear all of these things. This only happens in JAWS 2021. I am using the Vispero-provided script, and it used to work up until I think the last JAWS update, 2021-0712. If I could troubleshoot or debug this any further for someone to help me solve it, I'd glad to do that, just tell me what to check. Alerts are turned on with Alt+Windows Key+S, and when the events occur which are supposed to trigger those messages, pressing Alt+A reads them correctly as having been displayed. In Help > Accessibility, everything is turned on (checked), and I'm on the latest version of Zoom, 5.7.4804.
TIA

Re: Deactivating OneDrive using JAWS?
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
I don't recommend that at all because first of all there is a good chance it may reinstall the next time there is a major Windows update and secondly it uses such an inconsequential amount of space that you might as well leave it. This way if you decide at some point you want to use it it's right there and you can simply log in. Anybody who has a Microsoft 365 subscription might as well use it since you get 1 Tb of free storage with the subscription.
