I would try two things:

Close Narrator if it's running and/or Jaws 2020

Open Jaws 2021 either with a keyboard shortcut if you set one or type Windows Key + R and type Jaws2021 without spaces and press enter

Wait maybe 10 seconds and then press Jaws Key + Escape, this will unmute the sound card and set the volume to a medium level should any of this be an issue

If that does not help and you have Jaws 2021 set up to start at the login screen and also after logging in simply close everything and restart your computer.

If that also doesn't help could you maybe have set Jaws 2021 to use a different synthesizer? Do you have a USB or Bluetooth headset on your PC? If so maybe check to see if Jaws 2021 is speaking there.

Something strange this going on this morning, Jaws 2021 isn’t speaking. Using Narrator it says it is running but no sound. Had to start Jaws 2020 which seems OK. How do I get 2021 backing to talking ?  Tom

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

Control + Shift + N actually does tell you how many pages, but you have to route Jaws to PC and do a say line.

If you use the PC cursor it's in the edit field and tabbing just takes you from the edit field to OK and Cancel and back into the edit field, but if you do a say line with the Jaws cursor you hear this (I used a 2-page PDF for this):

I  press Control + Shift + N:

Go To Page dialog‑
Page: Edit 1

I now press tab:

OK Button

Tab again:

Cancel Button

And tab one more time to go back to the edit field:

Page: Edit 1

I now route JAWS to PC and do a Say Line (Jaws Key + NumPad 8):

Page: 1 of 2

You can also switch to the touch cursor when you are in the edit field and right arrow once, Jaws in this case will say "of 2" because in the edit field is the "1" and then the "of 2" is spoken.

But as others pointed out, if you route Jaws to PC, then go to the top of the page and arrow down you should also hear 1 / 2 or whatever the number of pages is, if you have 10 pages and are on page 6 it would say 6 of 10

Whether one or the other is easier and quicker every body has to decide, I guess Pressing Control + Shift + N and then route Jaws to PC and Say Line is a fairly quick and easy combination and it's maybe a bit more reliable in an accessible PDF.

Hi, Brian. The CONTROL plus SHIFT plus N command does not tell you how many pages are in the document. Besides that, if the document is not text, and requires OCR scanning through JAWS, the CONTROL plus SHIFT plus N command will not be available.

Mario,

I'm not in a position to check at the moment, but I thought that dialog told you the total number of pages, if you wait for it, as well.

That is the trouble I have with Office 2000 and Jaws 2019.
So I keep an older copy of Jaws on the computer for working in Excel.
Or another option is to install Libra Office, which is free, and work with Excel documents with that.

Sieghard,  Wow, you got it on the first try.  I have no idea how that happened.  I don't even know which key is the Scroll lock.  I had to turn on JAWS keyboard help to find it.  My daughter was using my computer to register for girls high school golf.  Maybe she used that feature.

Thanks so much.

IF audio conversion is all one needs, then it looks like a great choice.

GoldWave is more for advanced editing and can do conversion.

I like Ponties Media Downloader.
The latest version will even download an entire playlist into its own
folder.
I found the below note from the developer on the blind tech site. You do
not need a subscription to YouTube.

Hi, everybody!
I've noticed some discussions here about Pontes Media Downloader and I
just want to let you all know that we've just released version 3 of the
program.
The major technical difference is that version 3 has a javafx interface
instead of the older dot net interface.
Also it includes ffmpeg 4 for converting and, of course the latest
version of youtube-dl for downloading.
It comes with oracle java 8 included and accessibility features enabled
(tested with nvda and narator on windows).

I've tried to keep the same keyboard shortcuts as in version 2.1 There
is also a window that lists all the shortcuts (control k opens it)
I've added a downloads table in which you can manage individual
downloads. It is possible to download more than one file at a time.
Default setting is 3 downloads simultaneously.
The program will automatically detect a playlist now and will open a
window where you can choose the elements from the playlist that you want
to download. By default all items are checked.  You can check/uncheck an
item from the list with space All the checked items will be added to the
downloads table
You can also view each download's log (control g) This is useful if for
some reason a file was not downloaded (usually the last line of the log
is the error)

The downside is that the installer is bigger (around 70 mb in windows)
and it takes more space on the hdd (around 250 mb mostly because of java
and ffmpeg)
The major advantage is that the program is now cross-platform (there are
also mac and linux versions available).
The official webpage of the program is here
http://www.pontes.ro/en/scripts/#pmd <http://www.pontes.ro/en/scripts/#pmd>

You can download the program from here:
Windows version (32 and 64 bit)
http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pmd/Pmd_install_v3.exe
<http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pmd/Pmd_install_v3.exe>
Mac OsX version (64 bit)
http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pmd/Pmd_v3_osx.zip
<http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pmd/Pmd_v3_osx.zip>
Linux (Debian based, 64 bit)

<http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pmd/pmd_3.0.2-190302_amd64.deb>

Version 2.1 will remain available (for those who just need a simpler
utility) at
http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pontes_media_downloader_install_2_1.exe

<http://pontes.ro/ro/utile/instrumente/pontes_media_downloader_install_2_1.exe>

Pontes Media Downloader is just a friendly interface for youtube-dl - a
wonderful command line utility that does all the complicated media
extraction.
Have fun using Pontes Media Downloader!

Hi, Brian. With which other screen readers have you experimented with Adobe Acrobat DC reader besides NVDA? When I tried Narrator, it wouldn't read even a simple pdf which was completely text. In a previous message you wrote:

I just want to emphasize that there should be no need to arrow down or up.  The way this dialog is presented, visually, is such that you see, "Page 3 of 70," on a single line with the words, "Page," and "of 70," being fixed parts of the dialog text when the dialog comes up, and the edit box for 3 (or the respective page number) being placed between those two fixed parts.  I have no idea why it would stop reading after Page, Edit 1, type in text.  I would have expected, Page, edit 1, type in text, of  {total number in that document}.

Jaws is omitting the latter part of the dialog content.
