Unless you've explicitly chosen (and I don't even know if you can, when it comes to Adobe Reader's accessibility options) for the choices you've made at setup to apply to all users, they generally don't.

Almost any program that has options that can either apply just to an individual user, or to all users, will explicitly ask you which you wish to exercise when the install is occurring.

I would certainly believe that all the accessibility related settings of Adobe Reader are stored at the "per user" level.

Adobe only does this if Jaws is running so the simple answer would be to set up Jaws to load at the logon screen since I assume you would need to have it in order to log into your account, but then set it up so Jaws only loads for you when the desktop comes up and not for the other 2 users, problem solved.

Of course if Jaws does load for them and they unload it that will do the same thing. All my employees are sighted and of course don’t want Jaws running when they use any of the computers at the front counter and we get tons of PDF’s both accessible and image based with price lists, order forms, spec sheets for products, large product catalogues with a hundred or more pages and as long as Jaws is not running these PDF’s always open normally for my sighted staff.

Hi!

I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 2020.  Whenever I open a PDF, Adobe automatically goes into a mode where it “prepares the document for reading.”  How do I stop this automatic action?  Below is a bit more important information about this?

Basically, I want to know if this is a user specific setting.  My PC has three user accounts.  While I *do* want this automatic action for my account since I am blind, I *do not* want it to automatically do this for the other two user accounts since those users are not blind.

Thanks,

Richard

moderated Re: printer

Work with it in what way? I typically buy basic HP Laserjet printers which have just a couple of buttons and there really isn’t much you can or have to do on the printer itself. I guess it all depends on whether you want some sort of printer/scanner combo or just a printer, then do you want a colour printer or just a black and white? I personally hate Inkjet printers with a passion, but especially at home I may only print once every couple of month and even nowadays it seems that the ink drying up is still an issue and of course with a laser printer that is not a problem, they just work.

As soon as I type a couple of characters, which acts as a search limiter for what appears under the search edit box, I can just down-arrow and start going through the returned results, and have each announced as I traverse the items.

If I enter nothing, and just start down arrowing when in the search box, the list of recent trending searches comes up and each item in it is announced.  It sounds like this is what you're looking for.

Hi everyone

Whilst on leave watching the Olympics, I’ve finally noticed a number of what looks like recent shortcuts below the search edit box on the Google homepage. With mouse echo turned on, I can tell they are links to either sites I visit frequently. However, JAWS does not recognize them as links. They do come up if you use JAWS Key+Ctrl+B to display a list of buttons but the text for all options says “More Actions Button”.

You can tab to them but again, JAWS only reads “More Actions Button”. It is only by using Mouse Echo that JAWS will read what they are. This appears to be a quicker way to get to some favourite websites from the home screen rather than going into the menus.

Has anyone used these and if so, is labelling the buttons using the custom label feature the best option?

Cheers

Mark

Well, no matter what way you go at this time, including using a different platform, it's a workaround.

And you are absolutely correct that the root cause needs to be corrected.  This really could be an "oops" on the part of someone that just involves the generation of this particular promotion message, but they need to figure out why it happened to begin with in order to prevent it happening again.  And let's face it, Starbucks is a company that's both motivated to make sure its advertising is as effective as possible, particularly the type that encourages a "purchase train" even if it's with a loss leader.  They're also well aware of the PR ramifications of intentionally making something inaccessible and leaving it that way, and don't want that, either.

Ken,

Absolutely you need to bring this to Starbucks’ attention and push for a real solution for their customers using Windows.

IN the mean time, you can use the iPhone when needed, but keep their toes to the fire on the Windows issue.

Well done.

Thus, since he and the Jaws Help folks agreed that I was asking about a difficult problem, I am going back to Starbucks Support to elevate this issue since it affects all Windows screen reader customers.

One month ago, this was not an issue. They had a working process that was easy and did the job.

Why did they break something that was not broke?

Yes, I could read the email on my iPhone and use Voiceover or I could ask my sighted wife to click  on the Join button, but I would prefer to correct the cause of the problem, rather than use a workaround at this time.

Hi.

When you get to a problem site, is JAWS starting to read the page, and if so, are you immediately attempting to navigate without first hitting CTRL to stop reading it? It's the problem that I have, and what fixes it for me is to hit CTRL to silence JAWS, and then things work as expected.

Hope this works for you.

I am a new user to this email list. I've had Jaws since around 2018; I only initially used it as a secondary screen reader. I always heard that Jaws was a fantastic screen reader to use. However, in my discovery, I was configuring Jaws from scratch, and after I was done configuring, minus the speech/sound schemes, whenever I went onto different websites using Google Chrome, a good example is www.reddit.com or youtube.com, but when I either used the arrow keys, or the h key to cycle through headings, it would start jumping me to the top, or bottom of the page, or to a completely different part of the page, etc.. Would anybody be willing to help me troubleshoot the problem? I'm using the latest version of Jaws 2021. I can give the backup file if anyone wishes to help troubleshoot. Either that, or if any Freedom Scientific representatives are on this mailing list, are there any common settings that could cause this jumping?

Two things, make sure the Window is maximized and secondly, if this is Outlook from Microsoft 365 then sometimes there is a message about some feature or whatever on the screen which can be difficult to get to, but unless you close or dismiss it, it can cause this. When you are in your mailbox, try pressing F6 or Shift F6 a few time to see if you come across something or tab or shift + tab.

Sincerely,

Zach

This also happens if a page has scrolling content. The new version of Reddit does this, as do Discord and Slack, to name a few services. When you’ve reached the end of a screen of content, the app will automatically load more. This throws JAWS off.

If this is happening when a page first loads, try waiting a second and then pressing insert plus esc to refresh the page. If you start navigating before the page fully loads this will happen sometimes. HTH.

Do you have Jaws set to automatically begin reading on web pages and/or in emails?

That may add to some of this.

I have experienced this issue but not enough to have a consistent answer or reason why.
