Hi Ann & Judy,

Insert + spacebar, then Z, is not the keystroke you want.  This keystroke is a toggle for running Jaws with its default settings and switching back to your personal settings.

The keystroke you want is, Insert + Z, this toggles the virtual cursor off / on.

Try insert+spacebar, then z.  If JAWS has done something weird, this
keystroke will allow you to run it without the weirdness.

Hi David,

The Recents folder wasn't showing so I had to unhide it to access it, but below is another way of getting the shortcut on the desktop.  One more question, where is the setting for saving copies of files to the Recent folder?

1. From the desktop make sure nothing is selected and open the context menu with your applications key or Shift + F10.

2. From the Context Menu, navigate to, New, and press enter.

3. Select Shortcut and press enter.

4. In the edit field, type or copy / paste the location of the item below,

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\

5. Tab to, Next, and press the spacebar.

6. Name the shortcut Recent Items or a different name if desired.  Recent Items is there by default if you want to leave it this way.

7. Tab to, Finish, and press the spacebar.  You should now have a desktop icon called, Recent Items, or whatever you named it.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.

Many ways to skin a cat.

One of the immediate customisations I make to any Windows machine I install is to put  a shortcut to the Recent folder on my Desktop.

The folder path for the Recent Folder  on Windows 10 is.

C:\Users/your user name \Recent

You need to look for your own user name in the Users directory.

Bring up the context  menu on the recent folder and press n for send to and finally from the send to sub menu select Desktop create shortcut.

The Recent folder shortcut will open a folder containing shortcuts to all the documents you have opened/saved so makes finding lost documents easy.

The other thing I do is sort this by date modified so that the most recent documents are at the top of the list which makes finding them easy as well.

To do this open  the Recent folder.

Make sure your screenreader announces not selected. If it says selected control space to make sure it says not selected.

Now press application key or shift F10 to bring up the context menu again and now find sort and tin the sub menu select date modified.

It takes about 2 or 3 minutes to setup   this folder but this simple customisation has helped me countless times over the years finding lost files saved in strange places.

I cannot possibly second this recommendation more strongly, particularly if you're someone "old school" such as myself who virtually always searches for something based on its file name, or part of it, rather than the content in the file.

Windows Search itself is great when you occasionally can't remember what you called something but can remember some distinctive little snippet of content that would let you zero in on it.  But I use Everything Search on an almost daily basis because, even when the file is not lost, it's just quicker and more efficient for searches based on file name than Windows Search is.  And it's accessible.

open Wordpad and attempt to save the untitled document again. since the title has not been saved yet, you should get the save as dialog. just shift+tab a few (maybe 3 or 4) times to see if you can figure out if the location of where the original file you're looking for might have been saved in a different location.

If you know what you named the file, you could press Windows key and type all or part of the name in the search box.  I’m guessing WordPad does not have a recent files list, as Word does. I often go to that to find a file that I accidentally saved in an unknown folder.

Hi, Shirley. I understand your frustration with regard to some Windows applications saving files in strange places, and not being able to locate them. This is because, when one tabs to the save file option, the location of the file is not given. Here's what I did to stop all that nonsense. Hi Shirley.

Sounds like Word Pad has switched where it’s saving things. Hit CTRL+O to open the file, and see if you can open the file you created in Word Pad. Take note where it’s indicating the file is. You might have two folders with the same name.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Silly question probably, but have you checked it's turned off in JAWS 2020 as well as JAWS 2021?

You’ll need to change the setting independently in each version of JAWS, assuming of course that you don’t migrate your settings from one version to another.

Hi, Rick. What happens if, instead of pressing the ENTER key on the check box, press the space bar. It's possible that you can't delete the contact because the website thinks the box is not checked yet when using the ENTER key. Dear Listers:

I am trying to delete an address from my Blue Mountain addressbook.  The directions that say how to do this read as follows:

To remove a contact from your address book, you have to be signed into the site. You can delete a contact by selecting the 'Check Box' icon to the left side of the contact's name. Once you select the 'Check Box' next to the contact(s) name you would like to remove, a blue trash can icon and the word 'Delete' will appear to the top right of the address book, right above the 'Pen and Paper' editing icon. Click that to remove the contact from your list.

When I try to remove the contact using JAWS, I find the name of the person I want to delete and hit the Enter key where there is the checkbox by that person’s name.  Right above all of the contacts there is a “Delete selected,” button.  I hit the Enter key on this, but the contact will not delete.  Instead, I get a dialog where there appears all the names in my addressbook.  I tab to the name of the person I want to delete and make sure the person is selected.  I tab again.  It says to delete that person.  I hit the Enter key, but the person will not be deleted.  If any of you have ever used Blue Mountain, have you ever encountered this problem, and how did you resolve it?

Actually, insert+space bar, then Z, runs JAWS in a default mode of some sort. For a while it was the only way I could get into my bank's site. Once I got in, I did insert+spacebar then z again to get back to JAWS with my preferred settings. I had only change speed and perhaps punctuation, so nothing that should have interfered. However. Running JAWS with default settings worked.

There is sometimes a chrome.jsi file with things JAWS thinks I have changed. When I find it, I delete it because it makes things not work correctly.

Sometimes NVDA can see things JAWS cannot. I had to use it on the Chase Bank site for a couple of months before JAWS, or Chase, or something made it JAWS accessible again.

Hi, I don't use the automatic form field thing, it drives me nuts. But there is no form field there on that line where I'm supposed to type and there always was before. My bank still has phone cust serv on Sundays so I called and complained to let their i.t. people know as it always worked before. I was able to go onto the site using internet explorer of all things and of course had to get a verification code as it was a different browser, but the form field to type in the code worked fine and I was able to get in. I hope they get things together, I do not like nor can I figure out Firefox. Thanks. Judy & Libby

There are many variables here, do you use auto forms mode or not? Have you tried to type "e" or "f" to see if there is a form field where y ou can type in the code they sent? If so just type the code and press enter.
You can also try to turn off the virtual cursor and tab through the page to see if you get to the edit field for the code this way.
If all of this doesn't work I'd contact your bank and tell them that you can't access their site with a screenreader and they need to fix it.
In the meantime you may want to ask a sighted friend or family member to help or, if that is inconvenient maybew try Aira and see if they can connect and see what is going on. Of course in order to use Aira you would have to have an iPhone or maybe an Android, I haven't kept up as to whether Aira is available on Android.

Subject: link won't work

Hi, all, the past few days I have gone to my bank website and logged in and was told I needed to verify myself as they couldn't log me in because something was wrong. Well I changed nothing at all, but anyway, I requested a verification code which I received and where I was supposed to type in the code, there was no link. I have done this countless times over the years with my bank, Huntington, with no problem. It would have a line and a link for typing in the code, I would open it type it in and hit enter and all was fine. This time, for the past couple days, it says "type code here" but there is no link there at all. Can't do anything. Any ideas? Using Jaws 19, Win 10 and Google Chrome which is the same browser I've always used with my bank. Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

Try insert+spacebar, then z.  If JAWS has done something weird, this
keystroke will allow you to run it without the weirdness.

good luck.
