Re: IE 8 verses Firefox 11

Firefox is much more customizable with all its plug-ins and generally I

prefer it over IE because of this, but at least in my case, I've found the last few releases of Jaws to be over all more responsive with IE than Firefox. The last good Jaws version that I had luck with Firefox was JFW 11. That said, both browsers work with Jaws.

Hard to get my head around that much RAM, but so be it. Looks like it's either how Acrobat handles the memory management, or how JAWS is interacting with same. I'd wonder if there's someone you can turn to who can observe the on-screen activity with the same large document, and JAWS unloaded? Does JAWS cause the slowdown, or is it inherent in Acrobat/Adobe? Bissett, Tom <tom.bissett@...>
I find this interesting because I have to read manuals more than a thousand pages all the time and I have no issues. It does take a long time to load but once loaded it works fine. I will often save it as text or run it through kurzweil to convert to word because of the load time which can be five to ten minutes which is to long when I want to look up stuff.

There are those who make a precise distinction among shortcut keys, hot keys, and accelerator keys. I don't think most people make that distinction, and in this recommendation, I am not making that distinction either, treating your request for shortcut keys as essentially a request for keyboard equivalents to mouse clicks. Anywhere within Office, to get a list of shortcut keys (hot keys) that JAWS employs, press JAWS Key (insert) plus F-1. If you then press control plus end, you will come to the end of a block of text. There, depending on the application, you will get a couple of links that will take you to JAWS-related shortcut keys or hotkeys. If you are talking about shortcut keys that are entirely independent of JAWS, but work with Office, you should know that the keyboard shortcuts for mouse actions are easily found on the Internet. I'll let you look for them, or perhaps someone else will send you a link. I recently found a totally free resource for Office shortcuts in what seemed to me like an odd place. In the iPhone App Store, I was looking for something else when I found an App called simply Office Shortcuts. It was free so, I installed it. It is, as the name implies, a list of Office shortcuts (and they are the same whether you are in 2003, 2007, or 2010). These do not depend on menus. This little App is quite useful because you can try out all the functions without having to switch back and forth inside the Office applications. Also, always remember, in any Office application, you can always create your own shortcut keys to perform virtually any function. I know the iPhone reference is a bit off topic. Thus, I throw myself on the mercy of the administrators. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounces@... Re: Reading large pdf docs with adobe reader
Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
I think you're exactly right. Some of the old DOS word processors
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
worked rather like that old AR. I recall DisplayWrite 3, 4, and 5 had an upper limit of 4999 pages of text; pages 5000 and beyond were reserved for footnotes, and this ran on an old 386 platform with 640K plus high and expanded memory. The PDF reader produced in the UK by the same company that gave us Thunder seems to work on documents of various sizes, if you don't mind the fact that search capabilities are primitive to nonexistent. The last time I tried FoxIt, it was a total bust. Ted

With the current version of the reader, documents either load entirely into the virtual buffer or load a page at a time. In addition to the problem of having to advance through a large document by pages, you also have the problem of not being able to use the JAWS search feature to find text beyond your current page in the document. For proper use of these programs, it is recommended to use JAWS 12 and above. Sorry. Or, if you want the shortcuts, I suggest looking at JAWS 13 help files from Freedom Scientific. Cheers, Joseph

I use Firefox most of the time, but that's mostly because I prefer the Firefox plugin ecosystem than because I have accessibility trouble with one or the other.
