Jim, I just put in Richard’s name because I thought it sounded rude just to eliminate any name. Smile. As for, “They are still working on making the subscription model available outside of the U.S>” It sounds like the term I referred to earlier. Some of you are thinking about … and next year you will still be thinking about it. I think the making of the subscription available to non U S citizens has been bandied around since Freedom scientific was still freedom scientific, now Visparo.

If someone is buying one of these on their own, and they simply cannot save up for a good new machine; they serve a small market and if pressed, they will fix them when they show up in poor shape; like a laptop with a dead/dying battery.

But, what is truly sad, is that with Vocational Rehabilitation funds getting tighter and tighter, some agencies have started buying clients one of those computers instead of a new machine with a warranty for at least 3 years, so the person can be functional

Re: Computers for the Blind
While I have never owned a computer from Computers for the Blind, a friend of mine who I served as tech support for purchased a number of laptops over the years.
They are not "the latest and greatest" and, at least up until very recently (if even now), they routinely came with conventional HDDs not SSDs. But they were solid machines, many business class laptops off of long term lease that were "too old" to sell as refurbished to the broad general market, but with more than enough get up and go to handle routine web browsing, emailing, and office-suite type programs. Some did not, however, come with full-sized "desktop layout" keyboards, but I think that's likely different now, too, as it's a small minority of laptops that don't have a number pad on them. Make sure that the features you want are something you request specifically, e.g., having a number pad (or not having a number pad, as the case may be). -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not. ~ André Gide

Re: Computers for the Blind

Years ago, I got a refurbished lap top and it too was slower then molasses in January. I put in a SSD and the loading speed tripled. It turned out that it was originally a windows 7 that had been upgraded to 10. Now, it is so old, HP does not even carry some of the drivers needed to fix it. I naturally don't expect the latest and greatest, however, it would have been nice If I did not have to wait minutes, 5 or more for it to load up. Sometimes I think these agencies that donate computers, just do it for 2 reasons, no one wants them, or they are on their last legs and the company wants to claim it as a charitable donation for tax purposes. When the real truth is they can't be sold and it is the old, "shut up and just be happy with what you got. What do you expect! Attitude. I remember a while back a person fixed lap tops and was selling them for $3 or $400. Big problem was there was no display on the screen. For the sighted, very important. He lamented that no one was purchasing them. I was given one of them and it died with no chance of resurrecting it or repairing it within 6 months of receiving it. Another one, the mother board was shot not to mention the battery lasted for 10 minutes on a full charge. It was suggested it was cheaper just to get a new one.

Richard, if you have an occasion to email Eric again, could you ask him if he has any date as to when sales like below will be offered to Canadians? The subscriptions to JAWS have been around for years, yet Canadians still have to purchase the SMA rather then going the subscription route. Time and time again the response is, “It will be available in Canada eventually.” This reminds me of a phrase decades ago. “Some of you are thinking about … and next year you will still be thinking about it.”

IN response to Gerald’s statement below, I wrote Eric Damery directly on Sunday, July 4, and received a response today. Here is my question to him:
Good morning, or afternoon; whenever you read this, On one of the Jaws lists, the issue of to SMA or not to SMA has been coming up because of the sale.
It is being said that the SMA is going to be faded out and everyone wil be forced into the annual license.
Is that true?
Here is his response:
Hi Richard,
Not at all. There are currently two options and I expect that to continue.
If you are in ILM and current, maintaining a two year SMA is an option today. $150 is retail and you can get it during the show for $120. Pretty good deal. For those who have let their license lapse, or don't own one, than paying annually with the Portal solution will likely be less expensive and thousands of customers have gone that direction.

Eventually, the SMA option is expected to be phased out, and all JAWS users will be switched to the annual subscription option, which will be more profitable for Freedom Scientific.

Re: Downloading files from server
Bill White
Hi, Kevin. As Richard said, Filezilla is good. You can also enable ftp downloading from your browser as follows,
Enabling FTP Transfer in Your Browser Starting in late 2020, web browser developers began disabling FTP (File Transfer Protocol) file downloads by default. Our assumption is that they consider such downloads security risks. Artwork makes all of our software available to customers via FTP so until we change this, our customers still need to use FTP. This article describes how the user can change the browser to allow FTP file downloads.
Firefox
Firefox version 86 and later block FTP by default. If you get a strange dialog box after clicking on an ftp link on one of Artwork's download pages, this is the reason. (Note - it is also possible that your company's firewall may block all FTP traffic. Check with your IT department if you are not sure.)
type into Firefox's address bar: about:config
You will be warned to proceed with caution:
Accept the Risk and Continue.
When presented with the next window, enter into the search box the term "ftp". You will see a number of settings related to ftp file transfers.
We are interested in the parameter network.ftp.enabled. If the value is set to false, then ftp is disabled. We want to change that value from false to true. To change the value from false to true click on the toggle button.
After doing this you will see the value is now true.
You can close this window; now you will be able to use ftp.
Google Chrome
By default, Google Chrome will attempt to send you to a different application in order to use FTP as you can see below when I try to download Qckvu3 from Artwork's web site:
To correct this, first type into the address bar: chrome://flags and you will see the following window:
Now type into the search bar: enable-ftp You should see the flag for enable-ftp. If it is set to Default or to Disabled, press the label/button and select Enabled.
Now all you need to do is to press the button labeled Relaunch at the bottom of the window. This will restart Chrome and your change will take effect. Once you have done this, you should be able to use ftp.
Microsoft Edge
To correct this, first type into the address bar: chrome://flags and you will see the following window:
Now type into the search bar: enable-ftp You should see the flag for enable-ftp. If it is set to Default or to Disabled, press the label/button and select Enabled.
Now all you need to do is to press the button labeled Relaunch at the bottom of the window. This will restart Edge and your change will take effect. Once you have done this, you should be able to use ftp.

Assuming you are talking about an FTP client; yes.

Filezilla is free and works great with Jaws 2021.
It is made by the same open source group that does FireFox.

Question about people's experiences with Jaws 2021 May release!!
Shan Noyes
Hi all!
Well before anyone says well call the tech support or write Vispero I will say that I’ve done both and it didn’t answer my questions.
I’ve experienced a issue with the May release of Jaws 2021, with some scripts I’ve written for a web interface over 7 years ago. These scripts worked fine up until I applied the May release of Jaws 2021. I contacted Vispero and the responses were that the problem was with my scripts.
The scripts work fine in Jaws pre 2021, I have another computer which has not had the May release applied and they work fine there.
I asked on the Jaws scripting list and folks have also found that scripts in html have stopped working.
So has any of you out there experienced this issue.
Here is one of the scripts
; script: lastname ; Finds the last name name and read it ; Key command: grave then l Script SayLastName () invisibleCursor () FindString (GetFocus(), "Last Name:", S_Top, S_Unrestricted) NextWord() NextWord() SayString("Last Name "+GetWord()) SpeechOff () PerformScript PcCursor () SpeechOn () EndScript
The problem is the FindString command jumps down the page to find the text however, it is inconsistent in where it puts you on the line. So the NextWord commands do not jump you to the correct place. As well as this command provides inconsistent results.
Something that never happened in the previous 7 years of its use.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
Thanks
