Hi Mike,

My last couple of interviews were by phone, but prior to that, I did not take a laptop to the interview. I explained how I work, but did not demonstrate. I would not expect any accommodation on an interview, but maybe others would disagree.

Good luck to you.

Pam

Subject: Question about JAWS at job interviews

Hi,

When you went to job interviews, did you bring your own laptop with
JAWS, or did the employer provide JAWS as an interview accommodation? I
currently only have a desktop, but am willing to obtain a laptop. I am
assuming that I cannot expect any interview accommodations, and that I
should be prepared. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Mike

I would never expect an employer to offer a laptop as an interview tool.
If you go to an interview, and you expect to take notes; you should take your note taking tools with you.
A sighted person would not show up and expect them to provide a pen and paper.
If the job interview involves some kind of testing, then that should be accessible unless the interviewer doesn't know you have a disability.

I’m not aware of the option to have an email sent to you and cannot find such a setting.  Are you using the reminder pop-ups?  Under Options, then advanced, you can have a Reminder window appear and also set whether that is always on top. I have both of these options checked   Ten minutes before my appointment, the specific alarm sounds and the reminder window pops up in the upper left of my screen.  True, if you aren’t at your computer when the alarm goes off, it’s possible to miss the alarm.  The reminder window is in the alt tab list and JAWS window list, so you’ll notice it if you are switching between programs. If you are in Outlook when you walk away, I think you can hit insert T when you return to see if focus has gone to a Reminder, assuming that you have the always keep on top option set. Frankly, this is a key reason I have my mail and calendar linked to my phone.  I love getting the reminders on my phone in case I’ve walked away from my laptop.

Highlight the folder and then hit shift +F10 and then arrow up until you hear rename. Hit enter. Type in the name you want and hit enter. The new name will appear.

I am wondering, is it a folder or a Data File he wants to change the name of? If it's a data file, the group of folders that contains the data for an entire email address, the actions are a little bit different. In that case you'll have to go to account settings for that email address, and you can change the name there.

This may not be this person's problem, and, if not, I'm sorry. I've actually had someone come to me with the same problem while calling it a folder before, so I thought I would throw it out there.

Knowing if this is happening in all programs or a specific program would be a big help.  But, try Checking your speech and sound scheme.  Press, Insert Alt + S, to open the speech & sound scheme list.  Take notice of which scheme is highlighted when you open it.

If it isn't set on the, Classic, scheme navigate to it and press enter to see if that helps.

If this doesn't help please give more information like what program and version of Jaws.

HI All,

My wife was looking at my screen today and she saw a capture window that had a time ticker.  This is the game bar screen recording tool I discovered.  But there was no way of me to get to it, she could run the mouse over it, and jaws would read it, but is there away to get to that window with Jaws?

Mario, Highlight the folder you want to rename, press alt+Q, type rename and arrow down to rename folder. That is the most reliable way I've found. Some folders cannot be renamed such as the inbox or the outbox.

Mark,

I have used some of the approaches others have mentioned for copying the path name to the clipboard and reading there. You can read it in the address bar, but I think it only works letter by letter, not work by word.   To aid with your question on keeping focus in the address bar, you might try my preferred approach. After I go to the address bar with Alt D, I will hit insert up arrow to read the path name. If I need to inspect it further, I just open Jaws speech history with Insert spacebar then H and review it there. I just tested it again and was able to read work by word.  A simple press of Escape key exits that window and you are back where you were in the address bar.  If you really don’t want to even leave the list view, then you might follow those instructions to have the complete filename read off  in the title bar. Then, you can hit insert T to read the title bar and use JAWS history to inspect the path name in more detail, leaving your cursor focus where it was in the list view.

Thanks Robin for the helpful description.   Do you have a technique to locate where you are in the file system?  There are two techniques that have come up in this thread. First, Alt + D to the path box, then copy the path to the clipboard, open the clipboard, Insert + space, then C, and then review the path word by word. The upside is the ability to review path name word by word. But the downside is focus is moved and it's several steps. Second, technique was suggested by Alan suggests where we change a setting so the window title is the path name, available to us with one keypress, JAWS + T.  This keeps the focus location, but long paths get truncated in the title.

Okay.  There is a big question I have.  How do you locate wthe number of a song that is on a Spotify playlist?  For example, I am listening to a playlist of country songs from the 1980s.  I have noticed that when I come to the grid that lists the songs that when I arrow down a few times I cannot locate the number of whatever song is playing.  Instead, JAWS seems to just refresh itself or just loop, and different numbered songs show at different times.  If I know that, for instance, “Dixieland Delight,” by Alabama is playing I want to find out what number song it is on the playlist I am listening to.  Is there a way I can do that?  If so, how?

Hello list,

So I’m trying to convert some ePub files to Docs. I have both Codex and Calibre in conjunction with Carlos Nazario’s eBook-convert GUI to make Calibre more screen reader accessible. In both programs however, I do not find the option to select docs as the output format. There’s TXT, RTF, PDF, Mobi etc., but no docs. Unless I’m missing something or if there are limitations to Carlos’s Calibre add-on, I thought Calibre would be able to do this, but I’m finding that not to be the case.

So… am I missing something and can Calibre in fact make this conversion? Does anyone know of an accessible converter that can do ePub to docs? There seems to be a bunch of online options, but all things being equal, I’d prefer a desktop solution. Absent that, Has anyone tried any of these online conversion sites and if so, how well do they work?

I’m using the latest Jaws 2021 version.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

F2 works for me if I want to change the name of an Outlook 2016 folder. I wonder if it matters how you get there. I go from a message list to the folders list with shift-F6. Once in that list, I use first-letter navigation to locate the folder name. From there, F2 works as expected.
