If the varilus suggestions aren't feasible for you, couldn't you use control C and then control V to copy the text into a Word file to be attached to your email?

Tom,
I was thinking of the Voice Dream Scanner app in particular.
You can scan a page, and add the rest of the pages, and then export it as a PDF.
I have done this with forms for the State Library for the Blind.
Since this is a Jaws list, if you want more help with this, write me off list. Richardturner42@outlook.com

Hi,

Hoping someone can assist me with my problem.

I have been sent a three page .pdf file which contains one page of
questions which require me to answer, sign and email back to the sender.

A sighted person can fill out the now printed page for me but my
question is how to convert the completed form into an electronic copy
which can be attached to an email?

I can gain access to a copy of Kurzweil 1000 v14 but thephoto copier
utility seems to only allow the copy to be printed rather than being
saved in an electronic format.

Is there anyway Kurzweil, Windows 10 or Jaws 2021 can be used to
create an electronic copy of the completed document while retaining
the original format?

Thanks

Tom

I believe one could use Abbyy Finereader to do this. it can retain the image data but also save a text layer in pdf or in any other format you choose, pretty much.

Using a smartphone seems like an extra and unnecessary step, to me -- but there are direct camera-to-pdf apps available for Android, at least (probably for Apple devices, too).

Tom,

On the presumption that you have either a flatbed scanner or multifunction with a scanner, virtually all of them can scan to PDF for sending.

I have often printed a copy of a form that could not be filled out in PDF (which is a shame, because PDF supports fillable forms - and more need to generate those), filled it out, then scanned that back in as a PDF to return.

All the Canon multi-functions have supported this for years, and I recall the most recent HP multi-function I used about 5 years back did, too.

Hey Glenn.

JAWS oCR really doesn’t work well for books, I find. It’s ok for documents of up to several pages, but anything over 100 pp seems to screw up the virtual buffer and cause Windows to start declaring script errors.

I’m not familiar with doxilian except by name.

I have abbyy finereader here, which I just got recently because I was annoyed with not having a decent OCR solution.

A quick check, and the epub is already ocred – it’s not good oCR though by any means. The PDF is from google and the only text in it is the usual google messagea bout their electronic library. Anyway, I am runnin gthe pdf  through Abbyy right now in the hopes of getting better OCR than the epub. I will convert straight to .txt then, shall I? It’s almost halfway done with the Ocr process…

Interesting book. Is this for research of some kind?

I do a podcast on science fiction literature and we dug up some really weird old stuff on magnetism and mesmerism

Hey Glenn.

There are browser extensions to read Epub for both Chromium-based and Firefox browsers. I’m not too crazy about the ones I’ve tried, but they do mostly work. There’s also something like Qread, which can handle the format. I think there is an add-on for MS Word as well.

Ther’sa lso the Calibre book reader, which apparently can be used for conversion – it has some command line tools and I haven’t really played around with it. The main interface doesn’t seem all that accessible, though there is an NVDA addon for it and I should probably mess with it at some point.

I think pandoc will convert epubs to other formats, too.

What’s the book? If it’s that old and readily available online there should be multiple formats available including .txt. Stil, if not, you could send me the book and I’ll see what I can make of it – I have a bunch of conversion tools and so on.

I downloaded the PDF too, but it won't scan, it is likely protected as well.

Thanks

Vicky is talking about the annual licence which means the subscription-based licencing. As far as I know you can activate up to 3 computers with one Jaws subscription and only if you want to use it on more than 3 computers would you have to deactivate it from one in order to activate it on another.

But, all your questions will be best answered by FS staff.

Of course I can contact Freedom Scientific, and will likely do so early next week, but I figured I would ask here first just in case.

First, when logging into the portal for the home annual license and then going to the place to update ones profile, for some reason, updating the email address doesn't seem to be available. There's a checkbox to have a reminder sent when it's time to renew the license, but that won't help a lot if the person has changed their email address. So am I missing something here, or is it just not possible to update the email address online?

Second, I just recently purchased a used ElBraille 14 from someone, and I wanted to have that JAWS license separate from my SMA license for my main computer, so I could use them both at the same time if I wanted. That's why my questions now about the home annual license, as I just activated it for the ElBraille. Never mind, grin, that I've had this license for some time now, getting it a discount around convention time last year, and so only have a little over a couple of months on it left. Anyway, best I can tell, one is able to log in to the portal and deactivate and active license, or perhaps I should say an active use of that license. Thus, just out of curiosity, if I were to log into the portal and deactivate the ElBraille from another computer or phone, would the ElBraille automatically go into demo mode on boot up if not connected to the internet, or would the full license still work until I connected to the internet? Also, if I were to deactivate the license on the ElBraille, I'm assuming I could reactivate it again if still during the term of the license?

My activation questions are more of a curiosity thing, especially since being used to notetakers and not using a braille display to work the computer, it took me forever to figure out how to write the at sign on the ElBraille so I could get logged into the portal to activate the thing, so I plan to leave it activated. It's going to be quite a learning curve going from the U2 Mini and occasional use of the Polaris to the ElBraille, but I'm looking forward to it.

Hi,

I am pretty sure it is Japanese that my FireFox keeps installing to, and I cannot get it fixed.

Hoping someone here knows Japanese and can tandem in to fix it back to English for me.

Here's what happened:

I installed a clean Windows a couple weeks ago and I downloaded a new version of Mozilla Firefox.

I didn't think I would have to use the ESR version, and after it installed, I could not move around the screen or anything, and I must have moved the language selector that probably comes up on installation.

But after a restart of FF, I got a message that said this version does not work with a screenreader and I needed to install Firefox ESR.

So I downloaded that, then uninstalled FF, and restarted my computer, and then installed the ESR version.

Apparently it keeps something in the computer that remembers a language, and it came up in that language and I keep trying to change it with launching FF with command line switches like -purgecaches and one with a language option, sortof like -eula en and that did not help.

Then I tried uninstalling, deleting anything Mozilla and Firefox from program files (X86) and copy the same folder from my old HD into the same location and reboot, and reinstall, and it still comes up with that incorrect language.

So I'm thinking, if someone here knows Japanese, if that is indeed the language, if that person could tandem and help me out, I would be very grateful.

Here are a few words from my startpage home page, if someone can confirm the language, that might help me find the right person:

As far as I know you can activate up to 3 computers with one Jaws subscription and only if you want to use it on more than 3 computers would you have to deactivate it from one in order to activate it on another.

I believe FS has no problem with you having your SMA Jaws on two devices. I know you can have it on your home and work computers, no problem.

But, all your questions will be best answered by FS staff.

Good luck,

Subject: questions about the home annual license

I don't think Vicky would like being called a horse; but here it is from the horse's mouth, as it were, from her original email:

Her first question was about updating her email on the online portal....

I thought it was the other way around since she said she only had a couple of months left on her SMA. This is why I always think it's better to get such specific answers from the horse's mouth. It's the same with a bunch of local Facebook groups I am on, we have a group here called Ask Smithers and I am amazed how many times people post questions like "Is such and such store open today", "What are the hours for the such and such bank" or "Do I have to wear a mask if I want to bank in person at whatever bank". Here you just spend a minute or two at least to post this, then you wait until you see some replies which often contradict themselves and where half of them say "Why don't you just call them". It's pretty funny.

Sieghard,
I believe things got confused with the side chatter about the home annual license.
She has the SMA on her computer.
She bought a used El Braille and that was on the home annual license.

She thought she couldn't activate the El Braille on her SMA, but when she calls FS, she will find she can.
