moderated spel chaeck in Word after latest Jaws update

renette bloem

Good Morning

Vaguely I recall that this topic was mentioned?

I installed the latest version of Jaws 2 days ago.

I cannot use the spell check in Word (office 365) anymore.

Word freezes each time I press F7 to go to the spell check.

No need to mention that the spell check cannot take place.

Is there a work around to this problem?

Thanks.

So I am behind. I will go and read your update post after writing this, but I wanted to answer your question. I have worked in a call center before, and While the Bose would definitely work, I can see how they would feel bulky and maybe get in the way.

Hi, Madison. The one to uncheck is "Display a desktop notification when a message arrives".

Okay, I had this issue too.

Press alt f for the file menu and arrow down until you hear Jaws say “options” and enter on it.

Arrow down to “mail”

Tab until you find the two checkboxes (sorry I can’t remember which one I had to uncheck to fix the issue), one that says “display an envelope icon in the taskbar” and “display a desktop notification when a message arrives,”, I’m sure I didn’t get the wording exact, but it’ll be similar

Once you’ve unchecked both options tab until you find the okay button and enter on it

Hope this helps!!!

If you are wanting to place a copy of the shortcut on your desktop follow these steps:

Open your Start Menu;

Arrow up once;

Press the letter G, and arrow to Google Chrome;

Press your Application Key or Shift + F10;

Arrow to More; and press Enter;

Press your Application Key or Shift + F10; and Arrow up once;

You should now be placed where the shortcut is, you can then copy that shortcut and paste it on your desktop.

If it says you cannot do this without administrative privileges, there should be a button that says something like OK and continue.
Hit that and you should be good to go.

Hi Kelby,

JAWS don't announces the format in this dialog automatically. Sometimes this can be hard because the format changed here could be from a search and replace round you did before. To find out the format you made either for the find edit box or for the replace edit box you could use the TouchCursor.

This isn't comfortable so I made a JAWS script to get informed about the format being made in one of the two edit boxes by pressing a key. The problem is that Microsoft didn't name the controls in this dialog in a unique way so I had to look for language specific text in this dialog. Since I'm using a German Word version this strings differ from strings in an English version.

If someone here in this list can help out finding this English text strings I can translate my script to the English version. To do so I should know the exact name of the dialog title as well as the text being displayed in front of the format. This could be something like "Format:". Another string I should know is the string for displaying the options. It could be something like "Options:". If someone sighted is here to find this out or someone can use TouchCursor to find this out I can translate the script. Its important to know about lower and upper case.

All the best
Udo

Hi Marty,

to find out if Vocalizer Expressive causes this issue you can temporarily change the voice by pressing JAWS+Control+S. Select another voice, for example Eloquence then test this and turn back your preferred voice.

To find out the setting causes this issue you could either open Quick Settings by pressing JAWS+V or Settings Center by pressing JAWS+6. In the tree view you can scroll down to the last branch. The last branch displays the settings you changed last. Make sure you try out both: the app setting file in which your problem exists (for example word or outlook) and the default file. You can open the default file by pressing Control+Shift+D if the Settings Center or Quick Settings dialog is open.

The next step if this don't is successful depends on the time you want to invest to solve the problem as well your experience in computing for example to open text file and delete single lines. If time matters you could delete the settings file after backup the file. If you want to try out some things and perhaps if you have made a lot of settings you don't remember you could manually delete settings by opening the file in a text editor. Let me know if you want one of the suggestions giving a try and I can write more details here.

Good luck

If no setting entry causes this issue you could provide such a file with a cloud device so one can have a closer look at this.

One thing you might want to try is to go into the total recorder
settings and change the driver to only monitor the usb sound card -- I
may have the name of this option wrong, but that should fix your

Which sound card is total recorder actually set to use (check
regardless of what you had it set to prior to this update)?

If it's set to use the on-board audio it would not surprise me if it
selects some kind of exclusive mode forcing jaws onto the USB audio.
If this is indeed the case then setting total recorder to use the USB
audio should take care of your problem.

Well, first, it sounds like a note to both Jaws and Total
Recorder could
be in Order.

But, if you do not need Jaws talking while you are recording, you could
put it in speech on demand.

Ubt if you are used to being able to check things with jaws while it is
running, then it sounds like something changed on the programming side of
the world.

Is there a script for this program that could be updated if
you contacted

Before I start recording, JAWS speach is definitely using the on-board

JAWS speach is routed through the USB sound card. When I press the Stop

In addition to the on-board sound card, I am using a

Bill White

Hello again, Marty. Here is more information from the JAWS help material about sound schemes, how to activate, change them permanently, or how to temporarily change the sound scheme.

Speech and Sounds Schemes

Speech and Sounds Schemes Group

Use the Speech and Sounds Schemes group to customize how JAWS provides you with different types of information. For example, you can easily configure JAWS

to play an ascending tone when it encounters a check box that is selected, a descending tone for check boxes that are not selected, and say "type here"

every time it encounters an edit field. If you work with documents that contain text in another language, and that text is always bold, you can make JAWS

switch to a specific language when it encounters bolded text. There are many possibilities, depending on your needs.

You can save your speech and sound settings as a scheme. Schemes are lists of Speech Manager rules, saved as .smf files, located in the C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom

Scientific\JAWS\Version Number\Settings\ENU folder. You can create and save several schemes, however, only one scheme is active at a time.

To change speech and sound settings, open the Speech and Sounds Schemes group in Settings Center.

Selecting, Editing, and Creating Schemes

JAWS comes with several schemes by default. The classic scheme sets JAWS to behave as it always has, and is a good starting point. The other schemes use

the Classic scheme as a foundation and add additional information, useful for things such as proofreading documents. Use the Speech and Sounds Manager

to select, edit, save, or create schemes. For example:

list of 4 items

• To make a different scheme active, select it from the scheme list. Press INSERT+T to read the title bar, and JAWS announces the active scheme. To

edit the active scheme,

TAB to and activate the Edit Current Scheme button. After editing a scheme, be sure to save the changes by activating the Save Current Scheme button.

• To save a copy of the current scheme under a different name, activate the Save Current Scheme As button. This creates a copy of the active scheme with

a name you choose, allowing you to make modifications to the new scheme without changing the old one.

• To create a new scheme, activate the Create New Scheme button. This creates a new scheme based on the Classic Scheme settings. To make changes to the

new scheme, select it in the schemes list and activate the Edit Current Scheme button. Refer to the help topic

Edit Scheme Dialog

for more information on creating or modifying a scheme.

list end

Tip: You can use training mode to familiarize yourself with how the active scheme uses sounds to provide information. See

Training Mode

below for more information.

Changing Schemes On the Fly

In addition to changing schemes permanently through Settings Center, JAWS offers a way to quickly and temporarily change schemes. To do this, press ALT+INSERT+S,

then select the scheme to use and press ENTER.

Training Mode

Training mode helps you familiarize yourself with how a scheme uses sounds to provide information. When training mode is on, JAWS announces detailed information

for items, states, and attributes as well as the sounds assigned to them in the active scheme. You hear the sound, and then JAWS announces the same information

you hear when using the "Classic" scheme.

Tip: Training mode also announces information for items, states, and attributes that the scheme ignores.

Since the sound assignments made by the scheme's creator may not be immediately obvious, training mode can help you determine the purpose of each sound.

For example, if a scheme uses two different sounds to indicate the state of a check box, you might not be able to tell which sound indicates that the check

box is selected. If training mode is on, JAWS plays the sound and then says, "checked" or "not checked."

To turn training mode on or off:

list of 3 items

1. Press ALT+INSERT+S.

2. To turn training mode on, select "Toggle Speech and Sounds Training Mode On." If you want to turn training mode off, select "Toggle Speech and Sounds

Training Mode Off."

3. Press ENTER.

I am already on the Classic Scheme.  Just what exactly is the point of having so many scheme choices?

Hi Marty,

I don't use Vocalizer, but take a look at which speech and sound scheme you're running.

Press, Insert, Alt + S, to open the sound scheme list and take notice of which scheme is highlighted.

If it's not one called, Classic, navigate to the Classic scheme and press enter.  Now see if it reads any better.  If not switch back to your other scheme.  You could try other schemes to see if any others read better and keep in mind you can always switch back.

Also try switching to Eloquence and see if Eloquence reads correctly.

OK, JAWS reads my document perfectly with the alternative default mode on.  How do I figure out which setting is causing the problem?  I am using Vocalizer Expressive voice.  Could this be causing this?

Hi Marty,

To find out if a JAWS setting is responsible for such a behavior you could activate the alternative User by pressing JAWS+Space, then Z. This temporarily turns off your settings to check if a setting is responsible for this. To go back to your normal user settings press the hot key again (JAWS+Space, Z).

If no setting entry causes this issue you could provide such a file with a cloud device so one can have a closer look at this.

I have very few JAWS dictionary entries and I am sure that that is not one of them.  I don't know if this group allows attachments to messages, but I will try to attach a document with examples.  See if your system reads correctly.

Might you have a dictionary entry that is making it speak nothing for that?

Can you post an example of an email where it happens? For the record, on my system, it isn’t happening with the date in this message.

Hello,  I posted this question a while ago and this is still happening.  I will type a line of text in a WORD document with a date such as "Saturday, August 14".  when I read by pressing Insert + Down Arrow for Say All, or when reading by pressing Down Arrow to read line by line, JAWS will not say anything when I get to the line with the date in it.  If I read word by word by pressing Control + Right Arrow, JAWS will read perfectly.  This will also sometimes happen in an email as well.  I am using the latest JAWS with Windows 10 and Office 2016.  Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks.

Hi, Marty. The various JAWS Sound Schemes make it possible to change the behavior of JAWS in specific circumstances. One example I will give is the sound scheme which allows a change in how JAWS announces capital letters. One of the schemes allows JAWS to say CAP when a capital letter is encountered. Other changes are made as well, making it easier to proofread and edit documents, text files and e-mails.
