Focus on the Google iCon.
Press alt+Enter to open the properties.
Tab to Shortcut key and press the keys you want to use.
Tab once and I recommend arrowing to Run as Maximised. Then tab to OK or Apply and hit enter.
If it says you cannot do this without administrative privileges, there should be a button that says something like OK and continue.
Hit that and you should be good to go.

Hi,

When copying text from word documents, I find that footnotes do not get

How can I fix this?

I use Windows 10, JAWS 2021, Office 365. Thank you.

Hi Kelby,

JAWS don't announces the format in this dialog automatically. Sometimes this can be hard because the format changed here could be from a search and replace round you did before. To find out the format you made either for the find edit box or for the replace edit box you could use the TouchCursor.

This isn't comfortable so I made a JAWS script to get informed about the format being made in one of the two edit boxes by pressing a key. The problem is that Microsoft didn't name the controls in this dialog in a unique way so I had to look for language specific text in this dialog. Since I'm using a German Word version this strings differ from strings in an English version.

If someone here in this list can help out finding this English text strings I can translate my script to the English version. To do so I should know the exact name of the dialog title as well as the text being displayed in front of the format. This could be something like "Format:". Another string I should know is the string for displaying the options. It could be something like "Options:". If someone sighted is here to find this out or someone can use TouchCursor to find this out I can translate the script. Its important to know about lower and upper case.

All the best

Hi Marty,

to find out if Vocalizer Expressive causes this issue you can temporarily change the voice by pressing JAWS+Control+S. Select another voice, for example Eloquence then test this and turn back your preferred voice.

To find out the setting causes this issue you could either open Quick Settings by pressing JAWS+V or Settings Center by pressing JAWS+6. In the tree view you can scroll down to the last branch. The last branch displays the settings you changed last. Make sure you try out both: the app setting file in which your problem exists (for example word or outlook) and the default file. You can open the default file by pressing Control+Shift+D if the Settings Center or Quick Settings dialog is open.

The next step if this don't is successful depends on the time you want to invest to solve the problem as well your experience in computing for example to open text file and delete single lines. If time matters you could delete the settings file after backup the file. If you want to try out some things and perhaps if you have made a lot of settings you don't remember you could manually delete settings by opening the file in a text editor. Let me know if you want one of the suggestions giving a try and I can write more details here.

Good luck

One thing you might want to try is to go into the total recorder
settings and change the driver to only monitor the usb sound card -- I
may have the name of this option wrong, but that should fix your
problem.

started recording from an online stream or, from an external

therefore was not included in the recording, which meant, for
example, I could monitor how much time had elapsed, since the
recording had started.

Which sound card is total recorder actually set to use (check
regardless of what you had it set to prior to this update)?

If it's set to use the on-board audio it would not surprise me if it
selects some kind of exclusive mode forcing jaws onto the USB audio.
If this is indeed the case then setting total recorder to use the USB
audio should take care of your problem.

Well, first, it sounds like a note to both Jaws and Total
Recorder could
be in Order.

But, if you do not need Jaws talking while you are recording, you could
put it in speech on demand.

Ubt if you are used to being able to check things with jaws while it is
running, then it sounds like something changed on the programming side of
the world.

Is there a script for this program that could be updated if
you contacted
the script author?

Before I start recording, JAWS speach is definitely using the on-board

JAWS speach is routed through the USB sound card. When I press the Stop

through the on-board

In addition to the on-board sound card, I am using a
Creative Labs Sound

By default, I have JAWS using the on-board sound card and the rest of
the audio using the USB sound card.

Earlier today, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Total

speach has never been included in any recording.

However, When I tried to record something, using the

therefore being included in the recording.

Has anyone else had this problem, if so, how did you stop JAWS speach

Thank you in anticipation.

Bill White

Hello again, Marty. Here is more information from the JAWS help material about sound schemes, how to activate, change them permanently, or how to temporarily change the sound scheme.

Speech and Sounds Schemes

Speech and Sounds Schemes Group

Use the Speech and Sounds Schemes group to customize how JAWS provides you with different types of information. For example, you can easily configure JAWS

to play an ascending tone when it encounters a check box that is selected, a descending tone for check boxes that are not selected, and say "type here"

every time it encounters an edit field. If you work with documents that contain text in another language, and that text is always bold, you can make JAWS

switch to a specific language when it encounters bolded text. There are many possibilities, depending on your needs.

You can save your speech and sound settings as a scheme. Schemes are lists of Speech Manager rules, saved as .smf files, located in the C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom

Scientific\JAWS\Version Number\Settings\ENU folder. You can create and save several schemes, however, only one scheme is active at a time.

To change speech and sound settings, open the Speech and Sounds Schemes group in Settings Center.

Selecting, Editing, and Creating Schemes

JAWS comes with several schemes by default. The classic scheme sets JAWS to behave as it always has, and is a good starting point. The other schemes use

the Classic scheme as a foundation and add additional information, useful for things such as proofreading documents. Use the Speech and Sounds Manager

to select, edit, save, or create schemes. For example:

list of 4 items

• To make a different scheme active, select it from the scheme list. Press INSERT+T to read the title bar, and JAWS announces the active scheme. To

edit the active scheme,

TAB to and activate the Edit Current Scheme button. After editing a scheme, be sure to save the changes by activating the Save Current Scheme button.

• To save a copy of the current scheme under a different name, activate the Save Current Scheme As button. This creates a copy of the active scheme with

a name you choose, allowing you to make modifications to the new scheme without changing the old one.

• To create a new scheme, activate the Create New Scheme button. This creates a new scheme based on the Classic Scheme settings. To make changes to the

new scheme, select it in the schemes list and activate the Edit Current Scheme button. Refer to the help topic

Edit Scheme Dialog

for more information on creating or modifying a scheme.

• To delete a scheme, select it from the list, then activate the Delete Scheme button. You cannot delete the Classic Scheme.

list end

Tip: You can use training mode to familiarize yourself with how the active scheme uses sounds to provide information. See

Training Mode

below for more information.

Changing Schemes On the Fly

In addition to changing schemes permanently through Settings Center, JAWS offers a way to quickly and temporarily change schemes. To do this, press ALT+INSERT+S,

then select the scheme to use and press ENTER.

Training Mode

Training mode helps you familiarize yourself with how a scheme uses sounds to provide information. When training mode is on, JAWS announces detailed information

for items, states, and attributes as well as the sounds assigned to them in the active scheme. You hear the sound, and then JAWS announces the same information

you hear when using the "Classic" scheme.

Tip: Training mode also announces information for items, states, and attributes that the scheme ignores.

Since the sound assignments made by the scheme's creator may not be immediately obvious, training mode can help you determine the purpose of each sound.

For example, if a scheme uses two different sounds to indicate the state of a check box, you might not be able to tell which sound indicates that the check

box is selected. If training mode is on, JAWS plays the sound and then says, "checked" or "not checked."

To turn training mode on or off:

list of 3 items

1. Press ALT+INSERT+S.

2. To turn training mode on, select "Toggle Speech and Sounds Training Mode On." If you want to turn training mode off, select "Toggle Speech and Sounds

Training Mode Off."

3. Press ENTER.

list end

Thanks.

Hi, Marty. The various JAWS Sound Schemes make it possible to change the behavior of JAWS in specific circumstances. One example I will give is the sound scheme which allows a change in how JAWS announces capital letters. One of the schemes allows JAWS to say CAP when a capital letter is encountered. Other changes are made as well, making it easier to proofread and edit documents, text files and e-mails.

I am already on the Classic Scheme.  Just what exactly is the point of having so many scheme choices?

I don't use Vocalizer, but take a look at which speech and sound scheme you're running.

Press, Insert, Alt + S, to open the sound scheme list and take notice of which scheme is highlighted.

If it's not one called, Classic, navigate to the Classic scheme and press enter.  Now see if it reads any better.  If not switch back to your other scheme.  You could try other schemes to see if any others read better and keep in mind you can always switch back.

Also try switching to Eloquence and see if Eloquence reads correctly.

OK, JAWS reads my document perfectly with the alternative default mode on.  How do I figure out which setting is causing the problem?  I am using Vocalizer Expressive voice.  Could this be causing this?

To find out if a JAWS setting is responsible for such a behavior you could activate the alternative User by pressing JAWS+Space, then Z. This temporarily turns off your settings to check if a setting is responsible for this. To go back to your normal user settings press the hot key again (JAWS+Space, Z).

If no setting entry causes this issue you could provide such a file with a cloud device so one can have a closer look at this.

That seems to be the latest version of Jaws 2020. However, if you have an SMA which covers Jaws 2021 I highly recommend you install it beccause it absolutely does not make sense these days to fall behind with Jaws.

As somebody else pointed out, it does appear that Jaws will now update from one version to the next major version, but I assume it nonetheless will still install said newer version separately. Jaws has always done this, you can have 3 or 4 or 5 past versions of Jaws on a system and unload whichever one you are running and load an older or newer version at will.

Keep in mind that if you say "Yes" to that prompt, it will not immediately update, there is one more screen which shows you exactly which version will be installed and you have to actually select that version with the spacebar and then activate the "Next" button for the install to start and even then in fact it is only going to download the installer, after that you still have to agree to the licence terms and click next before it will actually be installed.

And if you really don't want to go through the process this way, just go to www.FreedomScientific.com, look for the link which says JAWS 2021 Update (05/19/21)" and click it. On the page which now opens you can read all about what's new and then select the link to download the installer for the latest version of Jaws 2021, once that is done go to your Downloads folder or wherever you saved it and run it. This will install Jaws 2021, but your existing installation of Jaws 2020 will not be touched and you can still use it any time you want.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Then you must have missed the latest Jaws 2020 update which I assume would be fairly normal if you started to use Jaws 2021 after it was released in November 2021, but Vispero did release a Jaws 2020 update in December of 2020 after Jaws 2021 came out.

It is version JAWS 2020.2012.13

Hello,

Sorry folks, but one of the features added in JAWS 2020 before it closed out any updates was to tell you if you could update to the next version.  JAWS 2020 will be getting no updates, unless something serious happens. The last time a jaws version was updated when the next version was out and considered stable was when Firefox completely changed the way it communicated with Screen Readers. Is there a reason you want to stay on JAWS 2020?

Best Wishes,

Enhancements in JAWS 2021.2105.53 (May 2021)

The following is a list of improvements made between the April 2021 release and the May 2021 update.

Easier Navigation Through Email Threads in Outlook

It is quite common, particularly in a work or school environment, for email messages to include several people, resulting in lengthy message threads as
participants reply and add to the conversation. When opening an email that contains a thread of messages, including replies or forwards, it can be time
consuming to read through the thread with JAWS or Fusion using the ARROW keys to locate particular responses as you need to move through all of the header
information for each message.

To make this easier, you can now use the N or SHIFT+N Navigation Quick Keys to quickly move to and place focus at the beginning of the next or previous
message in an open email thread, skipping over all of the header information. As you navigate with these commands, JAWS and Fusion reads who the message
is from, the date it was sent, and the first line. If you determine this is not the message in the thread you were looking for, continue using N or SHIFT+N
until you reach the message you want. While reading a particular message in the thread, pressing ALT+1 or ALT+2 now announces the sender or date  of the
message at your current location. To review sender and date info for the entire email, press CTRL+HOME to move back to the top before pressing ALT+1 or
ALT+2.

For users of the Focus braille display, you can set a NAV rocker to move through messages in an open email thread. While focused in an email, press the
NAV Mode button above the NAV rocker you want to set to cycle through the available navigation modes until "Message" is selected. If you are using an older
Focus display that includes Wiz Wheels, press down on the wheel to select the mode. If focus moves away from the message, the navigation mode defaults
back to Line.

Note: Currently, this feature is only available while reading an email and not when editing a message. Additionally, while currently limited to messages
containing replies and forwards from Outlook, we will continue to improve this feature over time to support emails from other sources like Gmail and iOS.

Voice Assistant Improvements

In the initial 2021 release, we introduced Voice Assistant, a new way to interact with JAWS in Windows 10. Voice Assistant offers a convenient option for
quickly performing various JAWS commands using natural speech instead of memorizing specific keystrokes. Since its introduction, we have received numerous
requests from customers wanting to be able to access more JAWS features by voice in order to increase productivity.

Some JAWS features you can now access by using voice commands include:

list of 16 items
• Selecting Text, especially blocks of text, has never been easier. Just locate the spot where you wish to begin selecting and say "Hey Sharky, Start Selection."
Then navigate to the location where selection should end and say "Hey Sharky, Finish Selection." You did it! At that point, all text between the two locations
will be highlighted. You can confirm using the SHIFT+INSERT+DOWN ARROW Command to verify you got it all. This works on Web Pages, in Documents, and even
in Emails.
• Working with the JAWS speech history without remembering any keystrokes is now even easier. Try any of the following:
list of 3 items nesting level 1
• "Hey Sharky, Show Speech History"
• "Hey Sharky, Copy Speech History to Clipboard"
• "Hey Sharky, Clear Speech History"
list end nesting level 1
• Working with Technical Support just got easier. Have you ever been asked to get the version information for your software or operating system? Try this
out:
list of 2 items nesting level 1
• "Hey Sharky, Virtualize Version Info"
• "Hey Sharky, Copy Version Info to Clipboard"
list end nesting level 1
• You can now ask JAWS to help virtualize a control or window, or even copy them directly to the Clipboard. For example, go to the JAWS About dialog box,
and try the following:
list of 4 items nesting level 1
• "Hey Sharky, Virtualize Window"
• "Hey Sharky, Copy Window"
• "Hey Sharky, Virtualize Control"
• "Hey Sharky, Copy Control"
list end nesting level 1
• When navigating Word documents and Outlook messages, you can use Voice Assistant to work with various elements like headings, tables, and graphics. Try
the following:
list of 3 items nesting level 1
• "Hey Sharky, List Headings"
• "Hey Sharky, Next Table"
• "Hey Sharky, Next Graphic"
list end nesting level 1
• When editing a Word document or Outlook message, you can use Voice Assistant to move to Spelling or Grammatical errors. For Example, try:
list of 2 items nesting level 1
• "Hey Sharky, Next Spelling Error"
• "Hey Sharky, Next Grammatical Error"
list end nesting level 1
• While reading a message in Outlook containing several replies or forwards, you can now say "Hey Sharky, Next Message" or "Previous Message." You will
skip the headings and get right to the various replies within that email.
• When focused on math content in Word that you wish to navigate, you can now say "Hey Sharky, Math Viewer." This opens the JAWS Math Viewer where you
can explore the current equation.
• To edit a math equation using the new Braille Math Editor, move to the equation and say "Hey Sharky, Math Editor."
• Toggle the Braille or Text Viewers on or off by saying "Hey Sharky, Braille Viewer" or "Text Viewer."
• Start or stop a JAWS Tandem session by saying "Hey Sharky, Tandem."
• Open the Select a Voice Profile dialog box by saying "Hey Sharky, Voice Profile."
• To access something in the System Tray, try saying "Hey Sharky, System Tray."
• Speak the most recent Windows notification by saying "Hey Sharky, Notification."
• If you have a laptop and want to know the charge level of its battery, just say "Hey Sharky, Battery."
• On a web page, open the Custom Label dialog box for labeling an element by saying "Hey Sharky, Custom Label."
list end

Braille Math Editor

JAWS and Fusion currently supports reading Math equations on web pages that are displayed using MathML, or math equations in Microsoft Word documents inserted
using the native Word math format. You can navigate the individual elements of an equation using the Math Viewer, accessed by pressing ENTER from a web
page or INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by EQUALS from a Word document when focused on the equation. If JAWS braille translation is set to Unified English Braille
or United States English Grade 1 or Grade 2 output, math expressions are also shown on a braille display using Nemeth Braille format.

The new Braille Math Editor in JAWS now enables braille users in Windows 10 to input their own equations, and in Office 365, edit existing equations in
Word documents. To open the Math Editor, press the layered command INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+EQUALS (plus sign). Focus braille display users can
also press DOTS 3-4-6-7 CHORD.

When the Math Editor opens, focus is placed into an edit field where you can immediately begin typing the equation in Nemeth braille from your braille
display's keyboard. As you type, a preview pane below the edit field visually displays the equation so a sighted teacher or parent can review it. Once
you are finished inputting the math equation, press ENTER or choose the Accept button to close the Math Editor. If you are in Word, the equation you entered
is automatically inserted into the document at your current location. The equation is also copied to the Clipboard so you can paste it in other applications.

Opening the Math Editor while focused on a math equation in a Word document displays the existing equation in Nemeth Braille, allowing you to edit or replace
it. After making any changes and pressing ENTER to close the editor, the current equation in the document is replaced by the new or modified equation.

Note: After inserting or modifying an equation in Word from the Math Editor, the blinking cursor (dots 7 and 8) on the braille display always remains at
the beginning of the math content, even as you move by character with the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys. If you need to insert another line of math content,
first press the END key to move to the end of the current math content and then press ENTER.

While the Math Editor is opened, you have the following additional options:

list of 3 items
• Press CTRL+N to start a new equation.
• Press CTRL+P to preview the current equation in the Math Viewer. When finished, press ESC to return to the Math Editor.
• Press ALT+E to open the edit menu where you can copy your Nemeth Braille to the Clipboard using a specific format. MathML is the default format when
copying, however, depending on the application where you intend to paste the equation, you can also choose to copy your Nemeth Braille to LaTeX or Braille
ASCII. After choosing a format to copy to, paste the equation into the specific application before pressing ENTER or selecting Accept to close the Math
Editor as this always copies as MathML and will erase the current clipboard contents.

• Expanded the description in Commands Search for setting a temporary PlaceMarker (CTRL+WINDOWS+K) to describe how this keystroke is used as part of selecting
text.
• Added the Copy Speech History to Clipboard keystroke (INSERT+SPACEBAR, CTRL+H) to Commands Search.

• Updated the INSERT+H help for Excel to list all of the latest JAWS hot keys.
• Added a new dictionary rule for "FYI" so JAWS no longer says the more verbose "for your information" when encountering this acronym.

How do I find out what version I’m running? I’d assume it’s the latest one since I downloaded it from the Mazilla website

Hi Marty,

I don't use Vocalizer, but take a look at which speech and sound scheme you're running.

Press, Insert, Alt + S, to open the sound scheme list and take notice of which scheme is highlighted.

If it's not one called, Classic, navigate to the Classic scheme and press enter.  Now see if it reads any better.  If not switch back to your other scheme.  You could try other schemes to see if any others read better and keep in mind you can always switch back.

Also try switching to Eloquence and see if Eloquence reads correctly.

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

OK, JAWS reads my document perfectly with the alternative default mode on.  How do I figure out which setting is causing the problem?  I am using Vocalizer Expressive voice.  Could this be causing this?

Hi Marty,

To find out if a JAWS setting is responsible for such a behavior you could activate the alternative User by pressing JAWS+Space, then Z. This temporarily turns off your settings to check if a setting is responsible for this. To go back to your normal user settings press the hot key again (JAWS+Space, Z).

If no setting entry causes this issue you could provide such a file with a cloud device so one can have a closer look at this.

I have very few JAWS dictionary entries and I am sure that that is not one of them.  I don't know if this group allows attachments to messages, but I will try to attach a document with examples.  See if your system reads correctly.

I think reading word by word will not use a dictionary entry.
Might you have a dictionary entry that is making it speak nothing for that?

Can you post an example of an email where it happens? For the record, on my system, it isn’t happening with the date in this message.

Hello,  I posted this question a while ago and this is still happening.  I will type a line of text in a WORD document with a date such as "Saturday, August 14".  when I read by pressing Insert + Down Arrow for Say All, or when reading by pressing Down Arrow to read line by line, JAWS will not say anything when I get to the line with the date in it.  If I read word by word by pressing Control + Right Arrow, JAWS will read perfectly.  This will also sometimes happen in an email as well.  I am using the latest JAWS with Windows 10 and Office 2016.  Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks.
