Hello List,

I’m using the latest version of  Jaws 2021 on a windows 10 laptop 64-bit.

I have 4 folders, 3 on an external hard drive, and one my laptop, that I want to delete.

It apparently will not currently let me delete them because I am either not the owner or administrator of them.

Does anyone know to delete them.

Step-by-step directions would be great.

Use speech history to find out exactly what the error is.  At a guess, I'd start by power-cycling your router, it won't hurt anything and routers can get weird if they're run too long without a restart.

Shirley,

Do you have a smart phone? Sometimes I find that a website that won’t work with JAWS will work well enough when on a phone. The opposite can be true, too.  As also noted, if you have a phone you can download the AIRA app  www.aira.io  or Bee My Eyes and get visual help.  I do this a lot when dealing with challenging websites.  I prefer AIRA for these tasks, since I feel better with their training and the tools they have to enlanrge the image from my phone camera. Yes, you can download Team Viewer to let the AIRA assistant actually connect to your PC and do the clidks for you, but I find that just holding the phone up for them to see and letting them guide my mouse pointer is faster for a quick task like  you are describing.  You can have 5 minutes of free help from AIRA every few hours, which would likely be enough in this case.  There is also a way to get free help via a JAWS promotion with AIRA, but the Call AIRA for Free button is so quick that I use that first.

Finally, this is a case where I would just waltz into the doctors office and tell them I was unable to use their site because it was not accessible for blind people.  Done that plenty of times in various places.

I have tried answering all the questions in the check-in page, but when I got to the question for me to verify my street address, I don’t see how to select the correct one—as there is no instruction. I tried simply selecting the same as I would something I wanted to copy, but it doesn’t seem to work. And when I click the button to confirm, I get the message that I have not selected my address. Help!

Hi all who responded to my query. FYI, I told them several times over that I was blind, etc. But I am happy to report that I had a good experience when I got to the doctor’s office. First, the staff there didn’t care whether I went through the signing-in process or not. They were willing to fill in all the information they needed. And I was one step ahead of them: I brought in a list of my meds, my reason for seeing the doctor, and all my contact information, including my emergency contacts, which I had printed out from my computer. They were impressed and I didn’t half to go through everything with them—it was all there.

The staff and the doctor were great, and all’s well that ends well.

You need to tell them you are blind and the documentation and Web form

is not coded in a way you can complete independently.  Ask them to

help you complete the forms or appointment verification. I have found

Marianne,

Decided to do a little experimenting directly in PowerPoint (2013, in this case, but should still apply).

When I have a picture object selected, the arrow keys will move it in precisely the directions you'd expect.

The easiest way I can find that doesn't require either vision or the mouse to resize a picture is via the Size and Position dialog you can get to by bringing up the context menu when a picture object is selected.  You can either hunt for it or hit Z once the context menu is up.

You may even find using the position option in the Size and Position function preferable to the arrow keys.

In the size function, everything's expressed in units relative to the page size units you're using.  The same is true in the position dialog, and the figures are relative either to the top left corner of the picture or the center of the picture.  You can easily get into negative measurements showing up if "from the center" is being used even while the picture is still fully within the viewable area.  You do not get this (generally) with "from the top left corner" unless you've positioned the picture such that its top and/or left edge gets moved outside the viewable area.   However, it's possible to push either the bottom or right edge out of the viewable area without any clear signal that's happened if you're not aware of the picture size.

Marianne,

Download:  Keyboard Shortcuts for Microsoft Office Programs
then shoot to the MS site specific to PowerPoint that's listed in that document.

I believe they discuss the keyboard shortcuts for image manipulation.  Right now my internet service is being really, really cranky, particularly for downloading, so I cannot check this out (and, believe me, I've tried).  You may be able to determine if my memory is correct well before I can the way today's going.

moderated IE Mode in MS-Edge for sites that only work with IE

What follows is not JAWS related, but given the amount of concern I'm seeing expressed about the demise of IE11 next June I consider the following to be a public service announcement.

I was concerned for users of Windows 10 Home because all of the official documentation I could find regarding IE Mode for Edge indicated it had to be enabled via Group Policy Editor, which Windows 10 Home doesn't have, and on a site by site basis.

It appears that for Windows 10 Home users (and I haven't checked on my Pro machine yet) there is an option in MS-Edge settings to allow you to turn on IE Mode in Edge.  Another tech I know posted the following, and it checks out:

If they load "edge://settings/defaultBrowser" that's bring them to the IE mode config page. On mine it's got IE mode enabled by default on pages that require it but had to toggle reload webpage on if it needs IE to on.

I had the exact same default configuration under Windows 10, Version 21H1, in Edge.  It appears to make sense to throw that toggle related to allowing reloading on if you do routinely need to access a site, or several sites, that are now IE-bound and are likely to remain so.  And I'd advise you to do it and try it out, now, as it may end up putting your minds at ease.

Hello Rahul
Sometimes JAWS will try to put in the tags when they are present, even if those tags are incorrectly placed as is so often the case. Just go to edit, accessibility, change reading order if you aren't satisfied with how JAWS has placed the tags. Of course, there are properly tagged PDFs but they are very rare.

Hi All,

I have not set a default reading order in Acrobat Reader for PDFs.
However, I tend to choose 'infer reading order from document' on most occasions. Sometimes, I choose 'use reading order in raw print stream', for those PDFs which have watermarks or are otherwise shabbily made.

Today, I was reading a book, and it chose 'tagged reading order' as the default reading order. The same PDF which was not being read by JAWS when 'infer reading order' was chosen' was read when 'tagged reading order' was chosen. Why is this so? Just curious.
