I was just working away on my Dell laptop, and all of a sudden, during the process of copying some files from my downloads folder, JAWS stopped reading my menus. It reads everything in Outlook, but no file names of folders in my documents or downloads. Here's more on the search to top it up.
  If you did look at the advance search as we spoken, you can find a few things.
1. There's a search area which you tab once you hit ctrl - shift -f and tell where the search to find, default is subject field only, there's a few more like, subject field and message body and last is frequently used text field.
The above is what most or at least half of the users will use most of the time
2. You can even bring down more specific search, like  From, Send to, , time. I am yet to talk about more option which can select things like important, flag etc.
Trust me, if you can't remember the first choice I mentioned above, then the more option will not be much use. Play with it and you will get the driff of all the search function we all mention on this list.

Control + Shift + F gets you the Advanced Find dialgue, I find most of the time a simple search which you get with Control + E works for me. If I am in my main Inbox and press Control + E and then search for any search term it looks in all the folders I have, if I want to limit the search to a particular folder I just go to that folder first, then press Control + E and type in my word or search term followed by pressing enter.

So, I’m not saying that it isn’t the best thing going, but, at least for me, I still can’t do some very basic things like search folders for a certain word or phrase. 

 

For example, the hot key like Control, Shift, A goes in to advanced search.  That works fine for me.  But following the prompts/understanding the menus from that point to find what Iam looking for just isn’t working for me.  I’ve run in to dead ends with other things that were very easy with WLM.

          I'm curious to hear some specific examples from you.  I absolutely will not deny the seemingly endless stream of new bells and whistles from Microsoft and others, but with the sole exception of the introduction of the ribbon interface (and even then, only for a subset of commands), I haven't encountered many keyboard shortcuts change at all.  The "old standards" have been the same quite literally for as long as I can remember, and the Windows commands that form the core of many programs (e.g., Save, Save As, the navigation dialog for both, Open, etc.) have been, too.

           There is very seldom, in my experience, any shakeup in existing shortcuts secondary to new additions to the UI, whatever those additions may be.  Note well I said seldom, not absolutely never.

I will not bother if the sound is being made or not. Too many variable  if the plug and play will not play. Speaker not working, cable issue, wav corruption or even that particular sound has been disable.
The best of guessing what is the problem, just open device manager by typing
devmgmt.msc on the run and tab twice after
then scroll down and find  Disk drive. open the tree and see if the new drive is there or not
Even if there's no drive letter allocation, windows will try to load driver to talk to it. If it does, no point trying too hard as what Bryan said. Just return.

I posted the answer to this question way back at the beginning. You need to initialize the drive and format it. The other problem may be a defective disk.

Open disk manager by typing disk manager in the windows search box in the start menu. Now maximize the window and tab to the lower pane and use your jaws cursor to navigate the drives. you will be looking for a drive that says raw or unformatted or something like that. You may need to go back to the PC cursor and arrow down to the bottom of the list and then use the jaws cursor again to read the drives that may not have fit in the window without scrolling. Once you find the drive use the ctrl and arrow keys to find the size of the disk. it should be around 2000MB. right click on it and click on format. If format is not an option you will need to  create a new partition. Just follow the steps in the wizard and leave everything at the default settings. It will partition and format the drive and it will be usable.

When you connected the new external drive, did you hear the ascending two-tone indication, that a USB device had been connected, and also, did you get the notification, that the driver software for that device was being installed? and lastly, did you place your hand on the device, to see if you could feel the slight vibration of its motor or you heard its motor, that is, if it is a hard drive?

If you did not hear the ascending two-tone, after connecting the external device, then Windows did not recognize that such a device had been connected to the system, and it is highly likely, there is something wrong with the device, and you should return it for a replacement.

I'm a big fan of Windows Run commands. You can press the Windows key + r to open a run command window and type diskmgmt.msc in the text box and press enter to bring up a file explorer window with your connected disk drives listed. You can shift F10 on any drive listed to bring up a context menu where you can assign drive letters, etc.

This is an outside shot, but I'm only suggesting this as something to check.

There's a setting that if turned on hides empty drives.

While in File Explorer press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Change folder and search options.

Control + tab to the View tab / page.

Tab a couple of times to the Advanced setting tree view.

Press the letter, H, 2 times I believe, to land on, Hide empty drives.  If Jaws reports this as, On , press the spacebar to turn it off.

Now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close.

          I'm curious to hear some specific examples from you.  I absolutely will not deny the seemingly endless stream of new bells and whistles from Microsoft and others, but with the sole exception of the introduction of the ribbon interface (and even then, only for a subset of commands), I haven't encountered many keyboard shortcuts change at all.  The "old standards" have been the same quite literally for as long as I can remember, and the Windows commands that form the core of many programs (e.g., Save, Save As, the navigation dialog for both, Open, etc.) have been, too.

If you are using MS365, then I am assuming the email client is Outlook. To do a find press Control + Shift + F. You will land in a field in which you can type a search term. If that is what you are searching for type the term. Then tab and you will be in a combo box where you can choose the search term to be either located in just the subject or in

both the subject and body of the emails.

 

If you are looking for email that was sent from or sent to someone, tab passed these fields and you will find fields in which to enter either the from or to names.

 

After you have entered the search terms you want press enter. When the search is complete you will get the  message “find now.” Once you get that message press F6 and you will be in the list of messages it found.

First, let me apologize for being so far behind on reading emails.

 

Back when I was using Windows Live Mail.  I could search for a particular word in any folder or subfolder by going through the menus/ribbons without any problems.

 

Now, after using MS365 for around 15 months now, I still can’t figure out how to use the search feature.

 

I could come up with around 5 or 6 additional problems that I have with MS365 but I don’t want to give myself a headache thinking about them.

 

I use MS365 because  it is better for me than any thing else that I have tried.  Including Windows mail and Thunderbird and the web mail that Gmail and A T and T offer.

 

So, I’m not saying that it isn’t the best thing going, but, at least for me, I still can’t do some very basic things like search folders for a certain word or phrase. 

 

For example, the hot key like Control, Shift, A goes in to advanced search.  That works fine for me.  But following the prompts/understanding the menus from that point to find what Iam looking for just isn’t working for me.  I’ve run in to dead ends with other things that were very easy with WLM.

I posted the answer to this question way back at the beginning. You need to initialize the drive and format it. The other problem may be a defective disk.

Open disk manager by typing disk manager in the windows search box in the start menu. Now maximize the window and tab to the lower pane and use your jaws cursor to navigate the drives. you will be looking for a drive that says raw or unformatted or something like that. You may need to go back to the PC cursor and arrow down to the bottom of the list and then use the jaws cursor again to read the drives that may not have fit in the window without scrolling. Once you find the drive use the ctrl and arrow keys to find the size of the disk. it should be around 2000MB. right click on it and click on format. If format is not an option you will need to  create a new partition. Just follow the steps in the wizard and leave everything at the default settings. It will partition and format the drive and it will be usable.

When you connected the new external drive, did you hear the ascending two-tone indication, that a USB device had been connected, and also, did you get the notification, that the driver software for that device was being installed? and lastly, did you place your hand on the device, to see if you could feel the slight vibration of its motor or you heard its motor, that is, if it is a hard drive?

If you did not hear the ascending two-tone, after connecting the external device, then Windows did not recognize that such a device had been connected to the system, and it is highly likely, there is something wrong with the device, and you should return it for a replacement.

I'm a big fan of Windows Run commands. You can press the Windows key + r to open a run command window and type diskmgmt.msc in the text box and press enter to bring up a file explorer window with your connected disk drives listed. You can shift F10 on any drive listed to bring up a context menu where you can assign drive letters, etc.

There's a setting that if turned on hides empty drives.

While in File Explorer press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Change folder and search options.

He has one other port, but it is not a USB-C port. The fact that he is using a standard USB adapter to try to run the device suggests that, he may try to find a drive that can be powered by a standard USB device.

An analogous situation was a private correspondence I had recently asking about captchas.  I responded that saying you were having a captcha problem is akin to saying you're having a webpage problem.   While there are not as many varieties of captchas as there are webpages, the general principle applies when there are many varieties of a given thing and you have not given any indication about the particular variety or instance.  It's almost impossible to answer any question about captchas without knowing, at the very least, the type of captcha involved.

One of my favorite quotations with regard to problems is this:

And I'm well aware that it often takes work to get to that precise definition, and it may not be available at the outset.  But keeping this in mind really helps when you're about to ask a question, as the more information available about he problem the more likely a potential assistant has enough to give an answer.  It can take several cycles to complete the scenario, but having a few foundational bits to start with helps a lot.

Vague problem descriptions almost invariably lead to topics like this one where other participants are trying, often in vain, to tease out information never initially offered and where that information is not offered by the original poster even after requested.

An analogous situation was a private correspondence I had recently asking about captchas.  I responded that saying you were having a captcha problem is akin to saying you're having a webpage problem.   While there are not as many varieties of captchas as there are webpages, the general principle applies when there are many varieties of a given thing and you have not given any indication about the particular variety or instance.  It's almost impossible to answer any question about captchas without knowing, at the very least, the type of captcha involved.

One of my favorite quotations with regard to problems is this:

Most problems precisely defined are already partially solved.

And I'm well aware that it often takes work to get to that precise definition, and it may not be available at the outset.  But keeping this in mind really helps when you're about to ask a question, as the more information available about he problem the more likely a potential assistant has enough to give an answer.  It can take several cycles to complete the scenario, but having a few foundational bits to start with helps a lot.
