Hello,
I personally have never experienced this issue, however if the commands in JAWS 2021 to adjust volume work consistently for you, then it should not be too difficult to add a JAWS scripting command to force the volume when the screen reader is started.

Good afternoon everyone.

It seems that whenever I set my computers volume level to the one that I want,  It will either go up or down no matter what level that I set it too.  For example, if I set the level at 30 percent,  when I close it out, it will either jump too 65, or 20 percent.  In other words, it fluctuates.  Is their anyway that I can correct this behavior?

Thanks for any help and suggestions that anyone can offer,

Which is the far more likely scenario.   I have not seen an external USB backup drive that does not come formatted and ready to go at plug-in for longer than I can remember now.

I'd be returning it for replacement since it is misbehaving out of the box.  And I've dealt with a lot of WD Passport series drives.

I posted the answer to this question way back at the beginning. You need to initialize the drive and format it. The other problem may be a defective disk.

Open disk manager by typing disk manager in the windows search box in the start menu. Now maximize the window and tab to the lower pane and use your jaws cursor to navigate the drives. you will be looking for a drive that says raw or unformatted or something like that. You may need to go back to the PC cursor and arrow down to the bottom of the list and then use the jaws cursor again to read the drives that may not have fit in the window without scrolling. Once you find the drive use the ctrl and arrow keys to find the size of the disk. it should be around 2000MB. right click on it and click on format. If format is not an option you will need to  create a new partition. Just follow the steps in the wizard and leave everything at the default settings. It will partition and format the drive and it will be usable.

When you connected the new external drive, did you hear the ascending two-tone indication, that a USB device had been connected, and also, did you get the notification, that the driver software for that device was being installed? and lastly, did you place your hand on the device, to see if you could feel the slight vibration of its motor or you heard its motor, that is, if it is a hard drive?

If you did not hear the ascending two-tone, after connecting the external device, then Windows did not recognize that such a device had been connected to the system, and it is highly likely, there is something wrong with the device, and you should return it for a replacement.

This is an outside shot, but I'm only suggesting this as something to check.

There's a setting that if turned on hides empty drives.

While in File Explorer press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Change folder and search options.

Control + tab to the View tab / page.

Tab a couple of times to the Advanced setting tree view.

Press the letter, H, 2 times I believe, to land on, Hide empty drives.  If Jaws reports this as, On , press the spacebar to turn it off.

Now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close.

Hi Phillip.

I never thought of using my other computer to get JAWS. I downloaded other files onto this slow laptop today, so I need to get them over to the new one when it gets here. I’ll use a nice flash drive for the job.

It shouldn’t be difficult at all. It’ll just be slower. You’ll have to navigate the webpage with arrow keys.

If I might make a suggestion, Why not download JAWS before you do this, stick it in a 1Drive folder or on a SD card, and install it from there? If your computer is already down and you don’t have access to another one, that would obviously negate that idea.

Hi, Kevin. There should be few differences using Edge with Narrator. The only thing you'll need to know is that if navigation seems difficult, use the arrow keys, not the quick navigation keys you would use in JAWS, and also, if the arrow keys don't move your cursor, use the CAPSLOCK key with SPACE to toggle scan mode. I believe Scan Mode should be on in order to navigate.

Hi.

I’m having a 2 TB SSD replacing my shrimpy 512 GB SSD in my laptop. I plan on using Narrator to do this. I’m also planning on using Edge to get the installer for JAWS. With all this in mind, I have a couple of questions.

I know the steps to get Edge up and running, as well as get to where JAWS is located, but I know how to do this in JAWS. Will there be any differences in Narrator?

That’s what I need to know. I’ll have some work installing software, but I did that about 2 months ago after Windows turned in to a black hole and sent everything on my drive, including itself into the great void of nothing.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

I'm a big fan of Windows Run commands. You can press the Windows key + r to open a run command window and type diskmgmt.msc in the text box and press enter to bring up a file explorer window with your connected disk drives listed. You can shift F10 on any drive listed to bring up a context menu where you can assign drive letters, etc.

Good luck.

Now tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close.

you need to open disk manager. then find your hard drive and see if it needs to have a Drive letter assign to it. but since It's not showing up  it probably needs to be formatted or initialized.

I’m late on this so you may already have dealt with this.

Is it being plugged directly into the computer, or a USB hub?

If a Hub, try directly connecting it.

Otherwise, absolutely call Microsoft accessibility.

And, if you have a smart phone, you can get them through the Be My Eyes app and then if they want to see the setup, you could point the camera so they can see the physical setup and see if any lights are on etc.

I've used it for about ten years, use it daily, and would rate its accessibility as very good. I do have trouble if trying to schedule recording in advance of a program, but that's the only negative feedback I have.

Hello Mike:

I have not yet come across a USB 3.0 device, which cannot be used when connected to a USB 2.0 port. The downside to doing that is, of course, is that you do not get the benefit of USB 3.0.

Hi Jaffar,

You're correct, but I was assuming that the external drive in question is a spinning drive.  The person hasn't mentioned anything about hearing any sound at all when plugging it in, so if a sound isn't assigned to the device connect event in a sound scheme I don't think they'll hear a sound when plugging it in.  Also if it's a 3.0 drive and wasn't made to be reverse compatible if plugged into a 2.0 port, then here's another possibility if it was plugged into a 2.0 port of not working, although unlikely.

Hi Mike.  I don't know if his drive is an SSd or a mechanical one, but the SSD drives nowadays are completely silent, so using our ears when we need too is a challenge.  The only thing we can depend on is when Windows itself plays a connected sound to tell us if the disk has been connected and available for use.  Cheers!
