If cost isn't an issue I recommend Microsoft 365 because as long as you also run the latest version of Jaws you will typically get the best experience. I say typically because I have once or twice experienced situations where an Office update may have cause temporary issues, but since Microsoft Accessibility as well as Jaws usually are made aware of these such issues usually don't last too long before a fix from Microsoft or Jaws addresses the problem.

Brian,

I understand about security updates and their importance and expect it's time to move to a newer version of Microsoft Office. I'm not a fan of subscription models and their continuous updates and believe the best security for one's computer is smart practices for how it's used. Now I just need to decide which perpetual version of Office I can still obtain at a reasonable price.

Microsoft (or any other software maker) supporting a product means that they do what's necessary to keep it safe to use as circumstances change.  The most important part of software support is security patches.

I am not telling you, or anyone else, what they may or may not choose to do.  But you have not been getting any significant maintenance and patching since last October, and using things like e-mail clients and web browsers that are out of support is using a wide open attack surface as time marches on.

I can't say that I've never, ever used anything that is out-of-support but what I have used does not have any contact with cyberspace.  That's not possible with an email client or web browser.

If that happens usually bringing up the links listing with Insert + F7 works. The issue is that even though Jaws speaks the link, somehow the focus is not exactly on it.

Funny you mention this, as I had this exact problem with a recent e-mail. A friend sent me several Dropbox links, all of which I could open either by press enter on the link or using the context menu to open the link. But there was just one in the whole list which, when I hit enter on the link, took me to the subject line and when I tried again, looking in the context menu, I couldn't actually find the option to open the link. As this was just one of about a dozen links, I assumed the sender hadn't entered the details properly.

Hi all,
I've had an issue on and off that when I click on a link within an email I'm taken to the subject of the email and not the webpage that the link is for.
This is extremely annoying especially when it happens with verification emails, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening in the future? I've tried changing the format that email messages are displayed in, but this hasn't made any difference, I know someone told me that when I'm on a link I can bring up the context menu and get something that says open hyperlink or something, but I've tried this and have not yet found such an option. I'm running the latest versions of Jaws, Edge, Office 365 and Windows 10. Look forward to any help anyone can provide me, everyone's help is always much appreciated!!!! Thanks Madison

Rick, maybe you can ask Brian for a tutorial on how to send a message directly to a list member rather than to the list in general, but then of course sometimes when this happens one really sees deeper into another person's personality and I must say your insults and petty attitude do not say much about yours.

. You keep going on about how you stand up for all us poor blind people who "need" Brian's help and we are just all afraid to fall in line behind your personal fude with Brian.

I unfortunately have to tell you that you apparently live in a fantasy world, not all of us are needy and put up with Brian's personality because we can't live without his technological expertise. Furthermore and I have pointed this out before, why don't you just ignore Brian's posts if they get you so riled up. Have you ever worked in a company with a number of employees? Have you ever been part of other organisations with a number of members who need to interact and get along with each other? I would assume the answer is no because if you had or were you would know that in almost any large group there will be people who clash because of their personality and if they can't see past their differences and learn to either tolerate or ignore each other, nothing good ever comes of it. The result then is exactly what is happening here, one person starts a smeer campaign against another, that person is joined by one or two others who also feel that way towards the other person but who normally may not act on that themselves and of course the other person may or may not stand up against all the insults and misinformation. In this case there is you, Randy and I believe somebody called Gerald who has voiced some support, then there is Brian and what seems to be a rather large majority of other list members who seem perfectly fine with him and who think your little vandetta is simply over the top.

I have a business and employee only 3 to 5 people but even there I had situations when I hired somebody who just would not get along because of some issue they had. In one case a part-time employee came to me and asked me to basically fire my store manager who has worked for me for 15 years, he is a nice guy and liked by just about all other employees I have had and, what is more, he is liked by a large majority of my customers. But he is not afraid to speak his mind and he doesn't put up with any BS. When I told her I could hardly do this she told me on the spot "well then I'll quit" and that was that, she left and all was back to normal.

I do hope Brian remains steadfast in his willingness to remain a member of this list, he left the Windows 10 group, but I would strongly encourage him to stick it out and from now on to simply ignore your jabs and insults, if you can't learn to tolerate or at least ignore his posts then I suggest that you leave along with all those who you say messaged you privately and start a new Jaws group, if you are the nmoderator you can then indulge your powers and kick anybody off your list if they say something you don't like, but spare the rest of us who simply want to discuss Jaws and who are either here to learn or to help.

Remember Matthew 7:5: Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

This will be my last comment regarding this.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi Randy,

I’m writing to apologize for my losing my patience with that jerk Brian Vogel again. He attacks blind people and I’ve witnessed this on different groups and what is as disgusting is those who defend him because he is valuable to the group, as they say. He may know about JFW and being he is not blind is what I cannot excuse and stay quiet. He is sighted and attacks those as yourself, blind, because of asking a question or addressing his sighted comments towards some specific topic. He has attacked women who are blind on other groups and I went off on him and he left the group. I really do not know why he is such a follower of the blind but his disrespect is just what I must stand up and fight him and his ways as well as those that defend him just because they need him to continue to help their technological needs. I could go on about that idiot but I’ll go and just want to let you know I was defending you and his attack on you as he does to many on these groups. If we do not put an end to his personal attacks, then who will? I’m sorry if I over-stepped my boundries but just know I was on your side trying to get that jerk to shut up.

Always,

Rick

To have someone who not only knows their way around the more nuanced aspect of technology (I certainly don’t know how to code or script) and is also very familiar with assistive technology and in particular screen readers is a valuable resource to have.

Ricky, you should keep your facts straight, Brian recently decided to unsubscribe from the Windows 10 list and the majority of list members felt this was a great loss.

You seem to be on a personal mission to convince others that just because you don't like his approach nobody should. Interestingly enough once again the majority of people on the Windows 10 list didn't seem to have a big problem with his messages, Brian can be very direct and he may question why somebody asks a question for which it is extremely easy to find an answer and he is definitely correct in saying that there are a few individuals who are just too lazy to take notes and hence ask the same simple things over and over or they ask because they don't want to go out of their comfort zone and try to look up how to do something by looking it up online.

If you like I could send you instructions on how to set up a filter so all Brian's emails go to your trash folder and this way you don't need to experience high blood pressure or waste time to bad mouth him everytime he writes something you don't like.

I by the way am also completely blind, but if you can't accept the fact that not everybody has your personality then maybe you are the one who should start your own list because as other spointed out, most of us are not offended.

The instructions given in the web page that Norman posted to have Jaws coping with IPA  symbols are spot-on.

I’m an EFL student, and I stumbled upon this page a couple of years ago, which helped me a lot.

By the way, if you happen to have the hexa code for any of the symbols used in broad and narrow phonetic transcriptions,

You can easily add them to the .sbl file as instructed in this web page.

Hi Sieghard,

no, that would be the military alphabet or, as you’d rather say in German, “Postalphabet”. IPA is the international phonetic alphabet, which uses symbols to represent the sounds used in different languages. Vowels, different phoneme combinations, etc., are represented visually for someone to be able to pronounce a word or sentence properly (Lautschrift).

As for the original question, here is a page trying to make JaWS cope with IPA, but I don’t know if it’s being maintained.

And another for Braille and IPA:

Which speech synthesizer are you using?

How did you do the installation; From the Jaws update, or from downloading the file and running it?

Did you do anything else with settings other than just installing the update?

Hello

Today I installed JAWS 2021.2103.174. I am using Microsoft Office 2010 on my Windows 10 desktop PC. Since this, I am getting all sorts of feedback on my Word files including grammatical and spelling errors plus word counts and other extra unwanted information. Just a suggestion.

Your connections may of built up a static charge.

Try unplugging your speakers, wiping them with a paper towel (can use connector cleaner if you have some), then plug them back in.

Yes Mike,

Nermin was right, the application settings “trump” the default settings.

This was most annoying on web pages as it seems that Jaws gets a little carried away at times and causes me to miss things.

I like it in emails, so all is working well right now.

Thanks to you and Nermin for getting me further into the Jaws illogic.😉

All I know is that I’ve found Brian’s contributions and knowledge about computing in general impressive enough to where I’ve personally contracted him to do some scripting work for my business. To have someone who not only knows their way around the more nuanced aspect of technology (I certainly don’t know how to code or script) and is also very familiar with assistive technology and in particular screen readers is a valuable resource to have.

There have maybe been one or two times where I’ve disagreed with him related to a list issue, but so what. Let’s not all drown in a glass of water. These are just mailing lists after all. Step away from the keyboard. Read a book. Get some sun. Enjoy a nice cup of coffee or music. And yes, Google is indeed sometimes your friend.

Support is not tech support, or at least that's not what's meant.
