Yes, Dave, they all do it, but I'll check on that which you mention
herein and see if I can force the issue with 12 and 13 in that manner.

Subject: How to stop JAWS from changing sound cards

I have all versions of JAWS on my XP system from 10 on up. In each
one, I have edited JFW.INI to force a default port for Eloquence. I
suppose it works, I've never seen it not work. I do, however, have an
odd problem. On the machine I just described, I have a Firewire audio
interface that isn't always turned on. I also have Total Recorder
installed. If the Firewire interface is turned on and Total Recorder
starts up to record a program in the background, not using the
software or sound card setting, but direct from the stream, JAWS
magically switches to the Firewire audio interface and stays there
until I turn it off, even after Total Recorder has finished its
recording task and exited. I don't use TR for anything else but to do
these background stream-capture-type recordings. Should I uncheck the
box in TR's advanced configuration so its audio drivers won't load and
somehow confused JAWS, making it think it should switch over to the
Firewire interface? Or is there a way to tell JAWS to stay where it
is? This is quite annoying, since I'd prefer to leave the Firewire
interface turned on all the time, but to prevent this behavior, I have
to remember to shut it off before TR starts, otherwise I've got to do
it afterward anyway to get JAWS back onto the default (and,
coincidentally, only other) sound card in the system.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: best antivirus with Jaws [safe mode works with JAWS?]

epierce@...

Download either 32-bit, or 64-bit versions of the Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus program at the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5201

Yes, you can download it for later installation.

For more heavy duty, short term needs, there is a free trial version of "VIPRE" anti-virus. VIPRE used to be from Sunbelt Software, but Sunbelt was sold to GFI recently.

In most cases, when there is a suspected infection, you want to run your anti-virus or anti-spyware software (such as the free version of MalwareBytes) in "safe mode", which I'm guessing may not work well with JAWS?

Also, can it be downloaded but not installed? I understand it's a
handful, so I'd like to download it on a fast connection, then use a
thumb drive to install it at the house. I'll probably wait until Avira
expires late this year.

Re: How to stop JAWS from changing sound cards

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

That happened to us recently. IT and I have done a lot of tweaking and
upgrading, and, at one point, it became necessary to swap a video card.
JAWS immediately shut up. Investigation showed that JAWS had tried to
switch sound cards, or could not find the default, but the machine in
question had only one.

It is a real pain, but here's what I do.

If there is only one attachment, you can usually access it via Alt T.

If there are more than one attachment, you have to do a alt A for
actions, and then usually an alt D. Then, you have to use your arrow keys
to move your PC cursor to the place in the message where the attachments can
be found.

Sometimes, it's really like hunting and pecking, but I can usually find most
of them.

Fortunately for me, my University is going to migrate to Outlook 2010 as its

Re: Balloons, Accessing Them

Hi Mike,
you can click a balloon message (or notification) by pressing numpad slash.
For windows 7, this info is available in this guide to the taskbar:
http://goo.gl/uu3XW
In this guide, in the notification area section, there's a sub-section on notifications (balloon messages).

Hi George,
When I land on a table and JAWS says "table with x columns and y rows", I immediately press f8, at which time JAWS will tell me the number of characters selected and so on.
Hope this helps.

Re: using the numpad keys

Soronel Haetir

With jaws why not just use the jaws cursor which simulates mouse
movements? It's way more convenient than windows' mouse keys bit,
which from the sound of it is what you are thinking.

You switch to the jaws cursor with the numpad - key (back to pc cursor
with numpad +), and then you can just use the arrow keys to move
around, and the numpad/ for a left mouse click and numpad * for a
right mouse click.

There are also keys for much smaller movements than the raw arrows
provide but I forget what they are, take a look at the jaws help for
those.

Thanks for posting this Gary, I hadn't looked at one note since 2007 and I couldn't find any instructions. I will take another look at it.

Howard,
If you do a Google search for

"OneNote 2010 From The Keyboard"

you will find a free book in PDF format that explains how to use OneNote
with assistive technology. I just read through part of the book, enough to
figure out that I didn't really need OneNote. It seems to be primarily
designed for students who need to take lecture notes. My student days are
long over.

The book explains the structure of the program and gives shortcuts for
navigation. OneNote should be accessible with both JAWS and Window Eyes.

From doing some googling it looks like onenote is not compatible with JAWS
or with any screenreader. Does anyone have an alternative to onenote they
could recommend that is screenreader friendly?

Thanks,
