You can export your contacts from Outlook and import them into Gmail.

To export your contacts:

  1. Open Outlook backstage (ALT-F)
  2. Navigate down to “Open & Export”
  3. Navigate with TAB to the Import/Export button
  4. A small wizard opens through which you can export your Contacts
  5. Follow the wizard screens and export your Contacts to a file with “comma separated values”
  6. Save the file to your computer and note the location, you’ll need it to import the Contacts to Gmail

After exporting your contacts, visit Gmail on the web.

  1. Open the JAWS for Windows button list (CTRL-JAWS KEY-B)
  2. Select and activate the “Google Apps” button
  3. Focus is placed on the Google Apps button, press SPACEBAR to open a drop-down list
  4. Select and activate “Contacts”
  5. Open the JAWS for Windows button list
  6. Select and activate “Import”
  7. Focus is placed on the Import button
  8. Press SPACEBAR to activate it

The Import dialog opens. Navigate to the “Select file” button and activate it. The Windows open file dialog opens.

Navigate the dialog to the Outlook Contacts file. And activate the Open button. Focus returns to the small Import dialog. ‘Activate the “Import” button to import your Outlook Contacts.

Close the Contacts tab to return to Gmail.

Since they are completely separate from e-mail messages, yes, there is.

I do not know where/when you are attempting to do this import, which clouds the issue.  Also, where you're importing them from.

Additional details are needed.

In the Address Book options, make sure the "Start with Contacts folder" radio button is selected. Address Book options are in the Tools menu.

Hello list,

Using Outlook 2016, how can I make the name checkbox option the default option when opening the address book? It’s always on more columns which I have to change to name if I want to actually get any search results.

Thanks,

I don't know, Cristóbal. When I open my addressbook and begin to do a search, the name only check box is always what is selected by default. Have you tried pressing the ENTER key on the name only check box once it is selected?

Contacts is completely separate from email messages, presuming you're using the import function in the contacts app.

And what gets imported is either all contacts (most cases) if you're not doing any pre-filtering, or the contents of a contacts file you've exported and tweaked.

That would be correct.  While a contact will be included in the recently used autocomplete list if you've recently used them (or even not so recently) there is no automatic creation of a Contact from an e-mail address entered in the To/CC/BCC fields under the typical default setup.  There may be a way to have Outlook prompt you as to whether you might want to create one for a new, unknown address, but if so, I don't know how to turn that on.

The problem being that the default is "checked" and has always been "checked."  The probability of this being unchecked is vanishingly small.

The problem is that the user has a completely inaccurate idea of how autocomplete works, period.  If they believe that typing first and last initial of an individual that is already in autocomplete will find them, unless they so happen to use that setup in front of their email address as the name, they're mistaken, and they've been mistaken for as long as I can remember.

You can't "fix" normal behavior that someone simply doesn't understand or refuses to understand.

No, but there's tons of information out there if you care to dig a bit for it.  See the results from https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Outlook+autocomplete+list

Specifically, these Microsoft pages:

Information about the Outlook AutoComplete list - Outlook ...

Manage suggested recipients in the To, Cc, and Bcc boxes ...

Import or copy the Auto-Complete List to another computer ...

and this How To Geek page, for starters:

There are scads more, but since I don't use Outlook I don't care to dig on this one.

The autocomplete addresses are separate from Contacts, though if you use a Contact at any point it will end up being included in your autocomplete list.

I have a definitive answer from someone who is far more expert in Outlook than I am, and he confirms my thesis (and my frustration).  I'll quote his reply and then give a direct link to the topic on Technibble for those who may wish to read through the entire thing:
---------
Autocomplete works off its own list, and is populated by what was put into the To box previously. It doesn't work off your address book, if you want the address book you click the "to" label.

And no, you cannot have contacts be in the "recent" list without use, and it won't ever suggest based on a contact. Which is kind of dumb... but short lived as a problem because use of either Teams or Outlook sorts out autocomplete automatically very quickly.
