Canvas will not be much of a learning curve. Are use it with both Google Chrome and Microsoft edge, and have not had any issues with either one. If you need more assistance, feel free to email me off list.

Hello list,

So, I have the opportunity to buy a used Freedom scientific  80 cell Braille display. The seller supplied me with the serial number so I could check it out with the manufacturer to see how old it is, if it’s been serviced etc. (they’re not the original owner of the display).

Can I just call FS at their 800 number and provide the serial number or is there some other way to verify if it’s been serviced at all or how old the unit may be? Can I just email the regular support@... address?

I’ve never done this so was just curious as to the process.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

a bit late, but try unloading and reloading JAWS. if that doesn't fix the problem, try maximizing Notepad's window. press alt+spacebar and x.

Dear all,
I use JAWS 2021 on a Windows 10 machine.
In notepad, JAWS does not speak when I either read/ select word by
word or I back space to delete some text.
Only option is to restart JAWS. However, this problem occurs
repeatedly, making restarting an irritating option.
I have updated to the latest update of JAWS 2021.
Please guide.
Thanks

Have they resolved the issue woth searching for favorites? The current version is useless for that. Searching through the favorites is not fun manually.

To sign out of Chrome:

1. Hit Alt to throw focus to the Chrome menu button, but not expanding it.

2. Left arrow until you land on the person logged in, usually this is a single left arrow.

3. Hit Enter to expand, then tab to Sign out.

4. Activate.

Whoever was signed in under Chrome is no longer.

Hello all, this question is for anyone but particularly  Debra Armstrong. I have a student that is attending courses at a community college. I was listening to the open line  cast that was made back in February. Debra, you say that Canvas is totally accessible with Jaws. Can you please email me off list on ways to help my client navigate the pages?

I was told that certain web browsers didn’t work with Canvas, and particularly Google Chrome. Here’s the link. https://utah.instructure.com/courses/325662/pages/navigating-canvas-with-a-screen-reader.

Yet, when I went to this link and used Internet explorer, I found that Canvas would not open in Internet Explorer.

When trying to navigate within Chrome, we found that for example when trying to read a message the message preview would come up, but the message body would not read the completed message. My client is using Jaws 21, the latest build. If there is any keystrokes to help read within Canvas, I would like to know what they are so I can give her some assistants before her classes starts on Tuesday.

Feel free to email me at malone_j@....

But why?  Global find and replace has a generic place holder for a graphic, ^g, and the replacement can be nothing.  It can be done using the find and replace function very easily in one fell swoop.

Hello, I’m using the most recent versions of Jaws2021, Office2016 and windows10. I had problems for a week when using Outlook2016. I did a update and repair on office2016. That took care of the Outlook problem. Days later I now have a problem when flipping from a web site and Ms word. If I move to quickly between the web site and MS word Jaws will crash. Has anyone encountered this problem? Any thoughts of something I can do to correct the problem? Thanks, Kevin

You could select all the graphics with ctrl-shift-o, then enter on one-at-atime and delete it. Then select again with ctrl-shift-o. It's tedious if you have a ton, but it works.

Uh, no.  Just downloaded it.  It's there and free as it always has been, as is PDF-XChange Editor, but that option is less accessible.

Find, Select and Replace All Images in MS-Word

You can leave the replacement blank and they'll be deleted.

I suppose you could make it into a text document and then back into a word document, though that might destroy a lot of formatting.

The question of OCR scanning Image Scanned PDFs that one knows contain text comes up again and again.  If you don't want to invest some huge amount of money in a fully dedicated specialty OCR suite there is an excellent option available for free from Tracker Software:  PDF-XChange Viewer.

This software is not 100% accessible, but what you need to perform an OCR scan on an Image Scanned PDF is.

You have nothing to lose but a few minutes time to test out either PDF-XChange Viewer (which uses the "old Windows interface style" and I know to be accessible for running OCR) or the free edition of PDF-XChange Editor to check out whether it suits your needs.  I personally prefer PDF-XChange Viewer.  Here are the step-by-step instructions I wrote for a client who was a grad student who kept having old image scanned PDFs assigned for reading by various professors on how to OCR process them using PDF-XChange Viewer:

Used when you receive a PDF that was scanned without Optical Character Recognition.  For reading stick to Adobe Reader or other reader of your choice as PDF-XChange Viewer is not 100% accessible.

1.     Open PDF-XChange Viewer from your start menu or the desktop.

2.     ALT+F, O  Open a file, you’ll need to know where it is and navigate there in the Open Dialog, which is very much like Windows Explorer.

3.     CTRL+SHIFT+C  Perform optical character recognition on the file.  This will be quick for small files, 20 pages or less, but will take some time for very large files, hundreds of pages.  Listen for the process to complete.

4.     ALT+F, S  Save the file over itself with the OCR text now included.  If you wish to save the file under a different name and keep the original use ALT+F, A Save As to do this instead.

You're not.  The paste into Groups.io looked perfect, but once it went through the posting process it was hosed.

See:

That page opens with Windows 10 as the default, but there are options to switch to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 on the page as well.

I noticed on the split topic you created that you did mention that
you're using Windows 10.

If you are using a Local Windows 10 User Account, then:
--------------------

Reset your Windows 10 local account password

1.
2.
3.
4.

* Use the following instructions to reset your local account password.
Your local account signs you in on your device offline, but it
doesn't link to your other devices. For a more complete experience,
we recommend you sign in with a Microsoft account to access services
like Outlook, Skype, and OneDrive on any of your devices. If you
forgot your Windows 10 password, the easiest way to get back into
your account is to reset the password for your Microsoft account
<https://support.microsoft.com/help/4026971>.
* Reset local account password for Windows 10, version 1803 and beyond
* If you added security questions when you set up your local account
for Windows 10, then you have at least version 1803 and you can
answer security questions to sign back in.
*
After you've entered an incorrect password:
1
Select the Reset password link on the sign-in screen. If you use a
PIN instead, see PIN sign-in issues
<https://support.microsoft.com/help/4026196>. If you're using a work
device that's on a network, you may not see an option to reset your
password or PIN. In that case, contact your administrator.
2
Answer your security questions.
3
Enter a new password.
4
Sign in as usual with the new password.

--------------------

I you are using a Microsoft Account Linked Windows 10 User Account the
easiest thing to do is open Settings, Accounts, and in the Your info
pane activate the Manage my Microsoft Account link and go through the
password reset procedure once you're logged in to your Microsoft
Account.  The change propagates down to your Windows 10 User Account
after it's reset there.

Some won't read past the first page, for example; others aren't tagged (this is almost all of them!) and while I've had some success with the AutoTag feature in Acrobat Pro this certainly hasn't solved all of my problems. What I'm really looking for, I suppose, is a list of all the tricks people have developed to deal with PDFs that don't need OCR work, but still aren't accessible.

Scott,

I really do not know how it differs from JAWS convenient OCR.  What I do know is that PDF X-Change Viewer has been an incredibly good, and incredibly accurate, OCR scanner that has worked very well on some pretty rough originals.  It also supports many additional language packs, at no cost, beyond English, French, German, and Spanish (if I'm remembering the four correctly) that come with the native utility.  I had a client who was a translator from Swedish to English and she used it with the Swedish language pack for documents that were in Swedish.  It does not, however, do any automatic language switching.  It presumes that a given document will be in a single language, so it wouldn't be good for, say OCRing an image scanned page from a language text where both languages are used interspersed on the same page.

What I liked about it was that it was easy both to run the OCR and to save the resulting file such that you'd never have to do OCR again and could send it to others with the text layer already there.  I had my client who was a grad student send these to his instructors, and asking them to replace the existing image scanned PDFs with those with the OCR text layer so that later students who were blind or visually impaired would not have to do any OCR processing on them.
