protected view in Word
Madison Martin
Hi all,
I just downloaded a document and it's in protected view, when I tried selecting it and copying and pasting it into the body of an email in order to edit it it didn't work. Can someone please tell me how to get the document out of protected view so that I can edit it and send it? I'm using latest Jaws, Windows 10 and Office 365. Thanks Madison

Re: Soliciting Donations of JAWS Dictionary Files (JDF)
First and foremost, thank you to all who have so generously contacted me with donations of JDF files so far!!
I also want to make clear that I have a collaborator on this project, and may end up with more than one, and would be sharing these JDF files as needed. If this were to make anyone considering donation uncomfortable I understand, and would ask that you not share. I have emailed those who have already donated with this information, but thought it a good idea to put out there for anyone who might be considering donating. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ~ André Gide

Windows Mail and JAWS
Shirley Tracy
HiEveryone,
Am I the only person who keeps having Windows Mail mysteriously zapped into Recycle Bin? It sometimes seems to happen for no reason at all, but I have noticed that it definitely happens more when I’m deleting several emails, one after another. Maybe I key them too quickly? It used to happen only rarely, but now it has become almost an everyday occurance.
I’m using my desktop and running Windows 10 and the latest JAWS. I also find Windows Mail closes at unexpected times, but that isn’t nearly as annoying as having to stop and go to Recycle to restore Mail to the desktop.
I’m not whining…I just want to know if it’s only me or if it’s happening to others.
TKS.

Thanks for this. Has something changed within Jaws as I used to use insert j or insert y to get to settings, but this no longer seems to work. Alison

Alison, it sounds like you may have sounds mode activated already. I'm not sure why it's inconsistent in Zoom though. However, the way I do it is open the JAWS setting centre, then search for Forms Mode Sounds. Then F6 to settings pane, then tab to the Enable Sound Notifications checkbox. Select it. Once it's selected, two buttons become available immediately following it. The first is to select the sound for entering forms mode. The second is for selecting the sound for when leaving forms mode. Activating the buttons will cause a dialog with list view of sounds to appear, along with 4 buttons, including a play button and browse button if you want to add your own sound effect.

Re: Microsoft Edge and adding favourites

Hi, Jim. I can still add a favorite in Edge by using CONTROL plus D. It gets added to Other Favorites, though.

Another problem with Edge is that I haven't found a way to delete more than one favorite at a time. If I try to select more than one favorite to delete in a batch, none are deleted. I wish you could use the delete key instead of having to use the delete option in the context menu.

Soliciting Donations of JAWS Dictionary Files (JDF)
Hello All,
I'm in the process of trying to put together a JAWS JDF dictionary format to NVDA DIC dictionary format converter. As a part of that effort, I'm asking for anyone who's willing to send me a copy of the JAWS JDF dictionaries they've put together. There is absolutely no nefarious intent here, none. There are people using any given screen reader who've spent years putting together their own private dictionary files who'd like to have those available in other screen readers they'd like to use, and as things stand no one has scripts/add-ons/utilities that perform this function. If you feel like tossing a copy of your dictionary my way, please use the Reply to Sender link at the end of this message to send it to me off-list. The last thing we need is a flood of copied and pasted JDF files landing in the inboxes of everyone on the group, mostly because they're just noise for those not doing what I'm trying to do. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ~ André Gide

If you hold down the shift and delete key the file get's removed without going to the recycle bin or hearing all that extra stuff.

Jaws saying too much
Morey Worthington
Hi all. Jaws is saying too much.
Example.. I am in a list of documents and I want to delete one which is highlighted. I hit the delete key, and Jaws asks me if I want to delete it, which is fine with me at my old age. Then without just deleting it, Jaws says the title of the file again and then goes on its way. Any thoughts on how to just have it do its delete thing without repeating? Using 2021 on a W10 H2 desktop machine. Appreciate any input, or am I just getting old and the heck with it? Thanks -- Morey Worthington

Re: No Luck With Closing Program Via Task Manager
Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>
Perhaps the designer needs to see if they need to add something to that program to insure all processes close when you exit.
It sounds like something is hanging somewhere.

Yes it is.
It is a program that a colleague has designed for us to send Morse Code via the computer.
We are teaching this for the students in the Handihams organization.

Hello again, everyone.
I tried Gerald’s suggestion about making sure the program I am working with is completely closed using the task manager, but had no luck.
I couldn’t find the program listed in the task manager itself, which to me, means it should already be closed.
I also looked in the system tray, but couldn’t find it there either, but perhaps I’m not looking in the right spot. If someone could tell me where to look for any open programs in the system tray, that would be appreciated.
Why the program still won’t re-open, unless I completely shut down and re-boot my computer remains a mystery to me.
Once again, I’m using Windows 10 and the latest version of Jaws 2021 here.

Hi, I don’t have that issue but JAWS and Office 365 have different glitches at times. I understand no software is perfect and yet I hope that JAWS developers will focus more on making JAWS better with standard programs such as Office. Dan

Heya folks,
Was just wondering if this is happening to anybody else with Microsoft Office 2019 and latest Jaws.
One out of 4 times I exit out of Outlook 2019, Outlook crashes and then pops up the dialog box to choose my email account I want loaded again. I have tested this with NVDA a couple of times and there’s no Outlook 2019 crash when using that screen reader.
Anybody else encounting this? Initially I thought an Outlook update may fix it but am more thinking now its Jaws causing it.
Am using windows 10 Pro, I’ve also created a new database as suggested in a forum but Outlook still crashes the same.
Any input or feedback from other Office 2019 users will be appreciated.
Cheers,
Jim

The personal dictionaries are in the "my settings" folder. In Windows 10 press the start button and find JAWS Utilities for you your version of JAWS, in this will be both a alias for My Settings and for Global Settings.
Alternatively one can find personal settings at: %appdata%\FreedomScientific\jaws\2021\settings\enu Where 2021 is the JAWS version. I believe the "JDF" files are the dictionary files and one can open them in a standard text editor. Cheer!
