You can test this hypothesis by doing Insert F6 to list all the headings in the document and see if the full heading you'd expect shows in that listbox.

This sounds more like a formatting issue by the document creator, if they havent set all the text in the heading as a heading, i.e. they only selected the heading level on the first word, then that is all you will get from JAWS.

I just updated FireFox and did a search from duckduckgo.com, my default page, for Price of Tea in China, and got good results that the latest version of Jaws 2021 read just fine.

I am using both Google Chrome and MS Edge successfully with JAWS 2019 and Windows 7.  And while it is true that Windows 7 is somewhat vulnerable because it is no longer being supported, MSE database definitions are still updated every day and so this anti-virus program provides a reasonable level of protection. To be perfectly blunt, the small security risk of continuing to run Windows 7  as long as you follow safe surfing practices outweighs the bigger risk of having your computer screwed up or even losing speech altogether by a bad Windows 10 feature update.  Almost without exception, every Windows 10 feature update has caused problems for blind computer users, and feature update 21H1 will soon be released.  Who knows what havoc it may wreak?

The default highlight is Yellow so just hit enter.

Now, because it is a visual thing, Jaws will not report the highlight color, at least, I have not found a way to get Jaws to say squat about the highlight.

Hi Mike,

Not sure what version of Word you have, but for me with the subscription version I have to press Shift + F10 or the application key to include or exclude any items on the status bar. I, for example, had Word Count showing when I press F6 and arrow right, but pressing Jaws Key + Page Down would not read it and pressing either enter or spacebar on it would just open the detailed word count window, same as when I press Control + Shift + G. Only after I press Shift + F10 was I able to check or uncheck items.

Hi Loreal,

You can set the status bar to read the word count when you press, Insert + page down, by turning on the word count feature in the status bar settings.  Try the following:

To show number of lines, line number, or many other options  in the status bar in Word try the following:
1. Press F6 until Jaws reports the Status bar is highlighted.
2. You can arrow down through a list of options after you have the status bar highlighted but, you'll get more options if you press the applications key or Shift + F10 to show a larger list of options.  This might depend on what version of Word you're running.
3. Down arrow through the available options, and when you have found word count or something else of interest press the spacebar to check or uncheck the item.
4. when done making modifications simply press AltF4 or escape key.
5. Review your status line to insure the settings have been properly modified.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

OK so since my last question went so well here’s another one.  I have to be able to accurately get a word count with my documents for one particular client.  I can have documents with as few as 100 words or as many as 15,000 words.  It used to be that when I opened a document I could immediately on opening the document use the JAWS key combination of JAWS Key plus Page Down and get the page and word counts.  Now JAWS says “page one of” however many pages followed by “spelling and grammar check no errors.”  How do I get it to continue saying the word count in the document instead of using the virtual ribbon and layered menus?  I know I can always do alt, R, P for proofing, then W for word count.  From there I have to enable to virtual cursor and get the word count from the dialogue that pops up.  Any suggestions on how to make this process a bit faster and go back to the way JAWS used to say things?  Should I turn off the spelling and grammar checker as documents are being typed?  Does that even have any effect on what I’m doing/attempting to do?

To expand on this, after you press F6 to go to the status line, press Shift + F10 or your application key, this brings up a list of items which can be included and you can select Word Count or Character Count as well and deselect things like Language, Zoom etc.

As Richard pointed out, Alt + H followed by I puts you into Highlighting, you can then arrow around and choose which colour you want to highlight the text with, the font remains Black, it's the background which changes.

Since Yellow is the first item pressing Alt + H followed by I and enter selects it and apparently Alt + Control + H does as well.

In Outlook you have to press Alt + H followed by I and 1 to get into the listing of available highlight colours, but if all you want is Yellow then Alt + Control + H also does the trick.

Loreal,

Since highlighting is a visual thing, and may not serve a screenreader purpose, the answer may not be forthcoming from this list, and a web search might prove more fruitful for you.

That was what I did and my client said the following:  “Good job with the yellow, girl! One thing though, it’s not the text we make yellow. We just use the highlight tool to highlight the normal text yellow. Does that make sense?”

Based off that comment it sounds like there’s something else that needs to be done here.

If you select the words, then use the application key or shift+F10, then hit f for font, tab to Color which is automatic by default and arrow down to standard colors.  And right arrow to yellow and hit enter then tab to OK and hit enter.

The word below is the word yellow, in yellow.

Yellow

So here’s my challenge.  I am typing for a transcription client.  There are points in the text where a note needs to be normal text but the highlight is yellow, not necessarily the text color itself as yellow.  Does that make sense, and how do I go about doing this?  I’m using the latest version of JFW and Word 365.

HI Tom,

A couple of shortcut keys to remember in teams are:  ctrl shift m is a toggle to mutue/unmute your mic, ctrl shift k to raise and lower your hand, ctrl shift b to leave a meeting.

As Vaugn says, hit enter to join a meeting, then tab to where you hear something like join meeting with camera off and mic/speakers on, and it should work.  I’m also still learning teams, and its quite a learning curve.

Good Luck.

Hello, everyone.

Later next week, I’ll be participating in a meeting that will be done via Microsoft Teams.

I’m familiar with Zoom meetings, so can’t believe that Microsoft Teams would be that much more challenging.

However, I don’t want to assume this, and get into trouble with  next week’s meeting due to access issues.

I will simply be participating in the meeting on a conversational level;  in other words, I won’t have to share screens or do anything too complex.

I already have the meeting link.

If someone can give me a quick overview of how to get into a Microsoft Teams meeting, and how to activate my audio and video as a meeting participant, that should be sufficient.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

You can  set up auto save  feature on MS Word  as I  did that once and it is  on so far.  You can also select  how much time you want it save  so for me, I auto save   everything  every minute. I think.

U

Unfortunately, I do not remember where I can find  auto save feature on MS word because it is one time set up and that is it  I apologize.

CathyAnne,

I was using Word, but I hadn’t saved it in One Drive. My bad. I do have an older copy of my first draft. So things could be worse.

Thanks for responding.

What application were you using?

If you were using Word and had your document uploaded to OneDrive, you may be able to recover a version in the backstage info property sheet.

Hi Everyone,

I was nearly halfway through a long piece I was writing, and Suddenly I discovered about 2/3 of what I’ve accomplished has disappeared—poof!

Unfortunately I had closed the file and reopened it before I made my discovery. No idea what happened.

Using JAWS, is there a simple way I can recover the missing part of the deleted file.

Desperately,

Shirley Tracy

Having double-checked the documentation for Custom Labels, it turns out that they are supposed to work across an entire domain (which would make sense). That isn't what I'm experiencing at the moment, though. Has anyone else had JAWS not apply Custom Labels across an entire domain before? Did you find a workaround?

Is there something similar for Custom Labels? Currently, when I set a custom label it only sets for one page, so in the example above if I have a notifications button that I need to add a label too I have to add it separately for each page. Is it possible to add it for an entire domain?

Good afternoon All

I have a question about using Gmail with Google Chrome. Not sure if
there is a setting to change this but when I read an e-mail and delete
it, I get thrown back to the top of the list and not where I was. Is
there a setting in Gmail or chrome or JAWS to change this? I am using
