Hi Loreal,

Is the word document window maximized?

Try windows key + up arrow, and then try the status command again.

Subject: Another MS Word question, JAWS saying zoom in/out

OK so since my last question went so well here’s another one.  I have to be able to accurately get a word count with my documents for one particular client.  I can have documents with as few as 100 words or as many as 15,000 words.  It used to be that when I opened a document I could immediately on opening the document use the JAWS key combination of JAWS Key plus Page Down and get the page and word counts.  Now JAWS says “page one of” however many pages followed by “spelling and grammar check no errors.”  How do I get it to continue saying the word count in the document instead of using the virtual ribbon and layered menus?  I know I can always do alt, R, P for proofing, then W for word count.  From there I have to enable to virtual cursor and get the word count from the dialogue that pops up.  Any suggestions on how to make this process a bit faster and go back to the way JAWS used to say things?  Should I turn off the spelling and grammar checker as documents are being typed?  Does that even have any effect on what I’m doing/attempting to do?

It should be in the “Review” (alt-R) under proofing, if the Ctrl+shift+G does not work. HTH

using Word 2010, I have a Word document from the Internet with more than 20 headings, but JAWS doesn't announce the whole name of the heading when I press h after turning on quick keys mode. what do I have to do to get Jaws to announce the whole heading as I press h?

I seem to have discovered the problem.  Somehow, the JAWS voice volume setting under Options>Voices>Voice Adjustment was set at ~67%; thereby trimming whatever the master volume was set to by ~33%.  Setting it back to 100% seems to have resolved the problem.

This could be related to sound card drivers or associated settings. Does this still happen if you connect a USB or Bluetooth audio device and use it instead of the default sound device?

Here is the way to do this with Jaws.

Select the text you want to highlight in yellow.

Then tap the following three keys speparately, alt, h, i.

The default highlight is Yellow so just hit enter.

Now, because it is a visual thing, Jaws will not report the highlight color, at least, I have not found a way to get Jaws to say squat about the highlight.

To remove the highlight, you simply repeat the steps above.  It is a toggle.

Yes, control+alt+h will do it, but the method of highlighting and then hitting alt, h, I at least confirms the color before you hit enter.

That way, if they get a notion to have you use a different color, you can.

Loreal,

Since highlighting is a visual thing, and may not serve a screenreader purpose, the answer may not be forthcoming from this list, and a web search might prove more fruitful for you.

That was what I did and my client said the following:  “Good job with the yellow, girl! One thing though, it’s not the text we make yellow. We just use the highlight tool to highlight the normal text yellow. Does that make sense?”

Based off that comment it sounds like there’s something else that needs to be done here.

If you select the words, then use the application key or shift+F10, then hit f for font, tab to Color which is automatic by default and arrow down to standard colors.  And right arrow to yellow and hit enter then tab to OK and hit enter.

The word below is the word yellow, in yellow.

So here’s my challenge.  I am typing for a transcription client.  There are points in the text where a note needs to be normal text but the highlight is yellow, not necessarily the text color itself as yellow.  Does that make sense, and how do I go about doing this?  I’m using the latest version of JFW and Word 365.

That’s what I thought too, but my client specifically said that the text itself wasn’t to be yellow and was to remain normal and only the highlight, but not the text, was to be yellow.

Hi Loreal,

There may be a way to specifically highlight something permanently as such, but would it work for you to select the text you want, and go into font settings and change the color there?

HTH.

If anyone knows how to do this, please share with the entire list as I would like to know how  to highlight as well.

Mark,

You can also perform a control tab and select the trash folder.  Once there, hit the application key and down arrow to the empty  folder option and hit the enter key.  This will confirm that you are deleting everything in the trash folder.

Give that a try.

Subject: Selecting All Question

List,

When in Outlook 365 and in the list of emails in my Trash Folder, I often select all and permanently delete them.  One problem, when I use the Control plus A command to select all, JAWS does not speak anything to let me know they are selected.  I have enough residual vision to see that they are selected but I would certainly feel better if JAWS reinforced this.  I should say that I am using the latest 2021 release of JAWS and Windows 10.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Mark
