Once upon a time, control+alt+r in Firefox would put it in reader view that tried to do that.
I've pretty much been using Edge for a couple of years, so I do not know if that works now.

I use the Jaws marking the start of a section I want to copy, go to the end, use the select between marked place and current location and copy.
Then, I paste into a text editor like NoteTab Pro and edit out the junk.
Set mark is control+windows+k.
At the end, insert+space, then m, then control c to copy.

in reading articles from a website using Chrome and Firefox, are there any extensions that filters out those pesky ads that may be included in the article. on occasion, I also would want to copy from the article.
please don't tell me to go look up what's available. I'm interested in asking the experts which one for each browser works well with JAWS or NVDA.

Well, nothing is going to get them all, because most add-ons are looking for things that don't come from the website your reading, and some will host ads natively.  I've been using adblockplus for years on any browser I can.  It stops a lot of them, especially if you set it to show no ads.  You may have to turn it off, unfortunately, to view the pages on some websites.  I keep edge without an ad blocker, and then if I need to read a site that won't let me I just bring it up in edge.

moderated Re: jaws 2021 problems.

Hopefully you were able to run the technical support tool so Jaws can in fact try and get a better handle on this, after all, if it affects so few people those who are affected need to do their part.

Of course unloading and reloading Jaws is a work-around which doesn't require you to go out of your way that much, another one might be to run Narrator when Windows starts, i.e. at the logon screen, and to see if that fixes the issue.

A few years ago one of my 4 computers at my store (it was an identical model to one of my others) would not let me read the Windows Start menu with Jaws, nor Settings or any Windows apps like Calculator. If I went into settings Jaws would just be absolutely silent, visually I could move through the categories and if I arrowed right, for example, 3 times and pressed enter Network and Internet would open, but as I said, Jaws would not make a peep.

This went on for over a year and any time I had to do anything in Settings on that computer I had to unload Jaws and use Narrator. Then at one point I read something on a list, can't remember which one, where somebody had this issue and they had figured out the solution. The problem was that for some reason a setting in Group Policy Editor (this was a Windows pro version) had been changed. It took me all of 20 seconds to change it back and from then on all was well, Jaws read everything fine again. I may have made a note somewhere what this was, but I can't remember now and don't feel like digging around to look it up, but this goes to show how one small little setting can make a huge difference and cause a pretty major headache for a very small number of people.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi Mike,

Sorry, it was the original topic.

When jaws starts up, you cannot get at the menus.

You have to unload and reload it.

When jaws is set to start at the logon screen and to start for this user, insert+j or any other key is not available to get at the menus.

When you unload and reload it, it works just fine.

When I started the topic, I had a huge rant about it!!

You will see it from the start.

It doesn’t happen to everyone, in fact, I have only found two other people that it happens to.

Nevertheless, it is a bug, and should be fixed, given the amount of money we pay for the product.

As you can see from my previous post, this has been confirmed by Vispero.

Regards and stay safe,

Pat

Hello Patrick,
I find what you have discovered about this issue very intresting.
Would it be possible for you to run the technical support tool under the Jaws help menu in order to send us a report so that we can look in to this further?
This is not the first time I have seen the issue. I actually experience it myself.

This is most likely an accident of history, where scripts were written for Symphony and as that software morphed to OpenOffice and LibreOffice there was no real need to rename the scripts.

See this Wikipedia page for how IBM Symphony became Open Office.  Libre Office is a fork of Open Office and is currently much better supported.

Trend Micro and Bit Defender May or may not be accessible. There is a

How to tame iTunes Desktop version so that it is a very reasonable music player with a screenreader.

  1. Tab to the library side bar view table.
  2. Change the entry there from whatever it is, artist or album and make sure that songs is selected in the view instead.
  3. Now go to the view menu – as mentioned alt F will shift focus to the menu bar and make sure that under the View menu column browser is set to show. The confusing thin is column browser is only available under song view.
  4. Now return to the view menu repeatedly to customise which columns you want in the browser. Personally I turn off genres and jus leave artist and album and songs.
  5. Now iTunes becomes pretty usable – you can now tab to a column of all your artists which you can simply navigate using the up and down arrow. Normally you can use first letter navigation as well but this seemed broken in the latest version of Jaws I think.  Once you are on the artist you want you can tab or right cursor across  to the albums column where all the albums by that artist will live and finally having selected an album you can tab across to the lists of songs in that album. Pressing enter will start the song playing and playback will continue until the whole album is played.  Space will  pause, right or left arrow move to next or previous tracks. If you want fast forward or rewind you are better off using NVDA as Jaws still interprets control alt and left and right arrows as table commands here. I have never understood why FS have never fixed this bug. I think you may be able to use the key bypass feature if you really want to but it might be just as quick to turn off Jaws whilst you are fast forwarding or rewinding.
  6. Other functions are available from the application key context menu.

I don't think it matters where you get itunes.  Tab and shift tab are very necessary, alt doesn't seem to bring up the menus, but alt+f will give you the file menu and you can arrow around from there.  Not all that accessible, but for what little you'll actually need it for, it will sort of work.

I agree with Brian on this point. There's really no need for a third-party anti virus anymore. just as you really don't need see cleaner or any of those types of apps anymore. You can do it all within windows with built-in applications that are tested with windows.

Nor am I.

But as a working computer tech I can say, without any hesitation, that third-party security suites can often cause unanticipated issues, and no one really knows why.  I have never seen Windows Security do this, which is unsurprising, as it's part of Windows and gets tested as part of it.

My main point is that what you hear about Windows Defender, or to be completely accurate I should say Windows Defender as implemented prior to Windows 8, is not accurate when it comes to Windows Defender or Windows Security as implemented since Windows 8.  The claims that Defender was a substandard option were quite accurate up through the Windows 7 era if you wanted "maximum possible protection."  This is no longer the case.  And for anyone, who likes anything, who wants to say something like, "But {my favored product} ranked above Windows Security in {specific lab's tests at a specific time}," I say look at more testing cycles and at multiple labs.  Where products rank changes from testing cycle to testing cycle and with precisely what is being used as the test samples.  The difference between number one and number five (or even number ten) on a top ten list is likely to be negligible in real world situations.

There are lots of good products out there, and there's nothing wrong with choosing a third-party suite if that's what you prefer.  But don't make the mistake of believing that one testing ranking for one testing cycle means that your chosen product will stay in that position, because it won't.  They all shuffle around.

Quietman7, a security expert who's a very active contributor on Bleeping Computer, wrote the following, which is well worth reading: Reflections on Antivirus/Antimalware Testing & Comparisons

Hi Michael,

Are the 2 computers linked to the same Dropbox account?  If so once Dropbox is running and connected to the internet the 2 computers should sync up.  If this doesn't happen you might have to go to the Dropbox website and link the laptop back up to your Dropbox account.  Steps are below.
Using JAWS 2020 and Google Chrome, I do the following:

On Dropbox site, after logging in, enter on Account. This expands the account menu.

Enter on Settings

Enter on Security tab, to select it.

There are several other settings before the list of devices. Either scroll past them, or look for the word "devices" on the page.

Devices currently linked to Dropbox are listed from the most recently used to the oldest. Each device has an indication of when it was last using Dropbox,
and each device has an "unlink" button.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

That is because you have to go to the Dropbox icon in your system tray, go to Preferences and tell Dropbox to use File Explorer and not their new Dropbox app which is not very accessible.

Here is what I do:

I press Jaws Key + F11 to bring up the system tray, go to Dropbox or press D and press enter.

You may hear that  you have to press enter again, if so do that and you should get a number of options you can tab through.

Press tab until you hear Access and manage your Dropbox settings Button, activate by pressing enter

Now from the menu which opens select "Preferences, this opens Dropbox preferences and you are on the General tab.

Tab and the first option is "Start Dropbox on system startup check box‑ checked"

Tab again and you get "Open the desktop app when starting Dropbox check box‑ not checked", this is most likely checked, not sure if it has to be unchecked, but I uncheck it.

Tab again and you get "Microsoft Office add-in", then "Show Dropbox as a save location in Microsoft Office check box‑ not checked", you can check or uncheck this as you please

The next item is "Dropbox Badge", it's a combo box which by default I think is set to "Always Show" and I don't think there is any reason to change this.

Now comes "Language", another combo box and I would leave it on "System Language".

This next item now is the most important:

Open folders in: Combo box‑

File Explorer

By default this says Dropbox, but since I believe a lot of the modern Dropbox app functionality is not that accessible I prefer that the Dropbox folder simply opens in File Explorer if I activate the Dropbox icon on the desktop and this is what determines this. Make sure it is set to File Explorer, tab to OK and activate it and you are now back to the old behaviour where pressing enter on the Dropbox icon opens your Dropbox folder.

screen reader compatibility file to make it work with NVDA or JAWS. I
lean towards taking the word of the screen reader users who have actually used it.

Trend Micro and Bit Defender May or may not be accessible. There is a
government agency in Texas, I can't remember which one, that signed an
agreement for a 3rd party vender to provide them with software. This
vender provides Trend Micro and Bit Defender. This agency says it
won't use software that isn't accessible. We all know how much those
statements are worth.

I know the good and bad points of MalwareBytes and Windows Defender.

Having said all of that what do you recommend, what do you use, how
accessible is it, and what do and don't you like about it? Thanks in
advance.

I use exactly the same config you do, and am pretty happy with it.

Hi,

success!!!!

you will see below, that after two versions of jaws, (2020 and 2021), vispero has eventually admitted, that this problem in fact, does exist.
apparently, they are looking into it.

below is the email i got from Cory jackson at vispero, after poking and prodding forever.

Hello Patrick,
I find what you have discovered about this issue very intresting.
Would it be possible for you to run the technical support tool under the Jaws help menu in order to send us a report so that we can look in to this further?
This is not the first time I have seen the issue. I actually experience it myself.
Regards,
Cory Jackson

I’m with Mike, that would be a total pain.

And like Mike, I needed the reminder to know what the issue was.

There are too many emails on this list to keep track without the context being included.

I’m glad they are paying attention.

With Jaws 2019 and 2020, none of my standard desktop shortcuts that I had made would work.  I even had Eric Damery remote in to see the issue and they never really got it resolved.  But, for some reason, it is resolved now in Jaws 2021.  That too was a case of only a few people had the issue.  I hope your issue gets resolved sooner.

Thank you for the reminder.  That would be a total pain in the a** if you needed to access the Jaws context menu right after startup.  Thanks again.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Pat
