moderated Showing the leader in a table of contents

Ann Byrne

In word 2016 I have set tab stops for a table of contents--6 inches, right aligned, .... as the leader. When I fill in information the titles align correctly, the page numbers align, but there are no little dot dot dots between the title and the beautifully aligned page number. Does JAWS just not display the leader? do I need to do something funky with the Word 2016 settings besides selecting the leader?

Thx,

Hello Allison

Ok, something doesn’t make sense here. A temporary file in your downloads folder? That usually only happens if you have downloads that are incomplete. Browsers generally don’t remove anything otherwise. If a download is in progress you will sometimes see two or more “parts” of that file, which are then copied into the proper filespace/name once the download is finished, deleting the temporary parts. Otherwise, you should have no temporary files in your downloads folder, and they should not be deleted.

What is it you are actually doing once you press f6? I mean what’s the next step you take? Are you getting a prompt that says that has buttons for you to activate? I have not actually seen that, if so, but it may have to do with my settings.

What browser are you using?

What I want is to hit the download link and have the item go directly to my Downloads folder without any other interaction. At the moment, unless I go through the f6 option and select download, all I get is a temporary file in my downloads folder.

Files are automatically placed in whatever folder you have set as your downloads folder in your browser. F6 just takes you to the downloads payne where you can 8view* your files – f6 doesn’t actually do anything, per se, just places your focus on the downloads area.

Are you looking to either see what folder your downloads are going to in-browser? Do you want to change it? Do you want a prompt, or no prompt?

All this is stuff you configure in settings of your browser of choice. Of course there are default settings – I cannot remember what those are as I am always fiddling with stuff. Right now Chrome just downloads when I activate a download link or button; no prompt or anything. I think I have Firefox set to be a bit more “prompty”. Often though what I’ll do in either is open the context menu for a link, press k, and enter in a filename from  there when the usual ‘save as” dialogue box pops up.  You can enter a full path there too, so there’s never any doubt or question as to where your files are going.

And, whilst on this topic, do we no longer use alt n to access the save or open options?

When I use F6 to go to downloads bar and open the downloaded file it always stays in the downloads folder. But I use Google Chrome so I don't know if that's different for other browsers.

Hi,

Dan , here in US, actually there are some government organizations whose platforms will not work on anything other than IE.  I know, behind the times, but in that case and some other limited sites IE gives the best results.

I keep IE simply for the purpose of possibly hitting a site that works best with it.  Otherwise Edge and Chrome are the go to browsers.

No offense, but I don't think very many people are using IE any more. Whether you have to go to the downloads bar with F6 or, as in IE, press Alt + N seems to be somewhat the same to me except it's a different key stroke.

In any case, you can always go into Google Chrome or Edge settings, go to the "Downloads" category and tell the browser not to ask where to save a file, once you do it will simply download to the location you specified, by default that should be the Downloads folder. Below is a copy of what this looks like:

Downloads

Location

C:\Users\Your Profile\Downloads

Change button

Ask me what to do with each download

Always ask me if I want to save a file or open it without saving, checked

I have this checked because I often want to save files I download to different folders, but as I said, if you uncheck it you should no longer have to do anything, whatever file will simply download to the Downloads folder.

Hello,

I am not sure this will answer your question or meet your needs but this is what I do.  I rarely use F6 to go to the download page.  I simply use windows E for file explorer and then do first letter navigation to get to the download page.  Then I open the file that was downloaded and either read it or save it.  While I am sure there are many ways to work efficiently with the download bar (F6) I find this method effective for me and not frustrating.  I must admit that I found Internet Explorer easier to use because it gave you an audio cue to hit alt N and then you could simply tab to open or save and then arrow down to complete your necessary actions.

Hope this helps some and thanks to everyone on this list for all of the tips and instructions which are constantly being listed.  I learn something new every day.

Hi, Leonard. I don't know exactly what type of device the computer thinks you're hooking up, but the setting would be in Control Panel>AutoPlay. Change whichever setting affects the phone to View Files In Windows Explorer. Then you can see what's on your Phone. Also, you can vary the amount of time these toast notifications stay onscreen, and I'll tell you below how to set that, too.

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Open Ease of Access.
3. TAB to Use the Computer without a display, and press ENTER.
4. TAB about five times, until you hear How Long Should Notifications Stay Open?
5. Adjust the combo box to the length desired.
6. TAB to Apply, and press ENTER.
7. TAB to OK, and press ENTER.

Now that notifications stay onscreen longer, you have more time to press SHIFT plus WINDOWS plus V to hear the notification. You may also see the notification in Action Center, which you get to with WINDOWS key plus A.

If you want that message not to display, press the windows key and type the word "autoplay". There are choices concerning what you want the computer to do when it sees various types of external devices--SD card, flash drive, and so on. When you find the choice you want, you have to press enter on it or the computer won't remember. then tab to the next device and choose again.
the next time you plug in an external device, windows/autoplay will do whatever you set it to do.

Best regards,

Sieghard

What browser are you using?

If it is IE, hold the alt key with n and tab to open or save.

Then repeat above steps.

The only change is, open folder.

Tab to open folder and press enter

The file should be in your downloads.

Job done.

I’m being a bit slow here, Brenda, so forgive me.

I belong to a Rock Choir and our parts are shared via their website. So, I find the audio file I need to download, hit the download link and at that point I have no choice but to hit f6 and keep tabbing until I am offered the option of save or open. By default the download goes to my download folder where I can find it and then save it to wherever I choose.

I am unsure how this would work using your method.

A while ago someone mentioned how to download and the item would automatically be placed in your downloads folder without having to go through the f6 procedure. Could someone please remind me how this is done.

And, whilst on this topic, do we no longer use alt n to access the save or open options?

Now assign a shortcut keystroke to that desktop Downloads shortcut and get to it just a little quicker.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

After I determined my download folder, I navigated to it with File Explorer, and while it was selected, but not opened, I right click or use shift+f10 and select create shortcut.
Then copy that shortcut to my desktop and I can jump to that folder any old time.

Hi Leonard,

Try the following:
1. Open the Control Panel, find, Ease of Access Center link and press enter.
2. Tab 6 times, I believe to, Use the computer without a display Link and press enter.
3. Tab 4 times, I believe, to How long should Windows notification dialog boxes stay open? Combo box.
4. Arrow up / down to the desired time, tab to, Okay, and press enter.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

When I plug my iPhone in to my computer I get the message asking me
something like "tell the computer what happens when a device is attached
to this computer?" I am paraphrasing of course since this balloon
message goes away so quickly. In windows 10 where is the option to make
a choice to answer Win10's question?
