Re: how to download without going through f6 download bar
Dan Longmore
Hi, Dan , here in US, actually there are some government organizations whose platforms will not work on anything other than IE. I know, behind the times, but in that case and some other limited sites IE gives the best results. I keep IE simply for the purpose of possibly hitting a site that works best with it. Otherwise Edge and Chrome are the go to browsers.

No offense, but I don't think very many people are using IE any more. Whether you have to go to the downloads bar with F6 or, as in IE, press Alt + N seems to be somewhat the same to me except it's a different key stroke. In any case, you can always go into Google Chrome or Edge settings, go to the "Downloads" category and tell the browser not to ask where to save a file, once you do it will simply download to the location you specified, by default that should be the Downloads folder. Below is a copy of what this looks like:
Downloads Location C:\Users\Your Profile\Downloads Change button Ask me what to do with each download Always ask me if I want to save a file or open it without saving, checked
I have this checked because I often want to save files I download to different folders, but as I said, if you uncheck it you should no longer have to do anything, whatever file will simply download to the Downloads folder.
Best regards, Sieghard

I’m being a bit slow here, Brenda, so forgive me. I belong to a Rock Choir and our parts are shared via their website. So, I find the audio file I need to download, hit the download link and at that point I have no choice but to hit f6 and keep tabbing until I am offered the option of save or open. By default the download goes to my download folder where I can find it and then save it to wherever I choose. I am unsure how this would work using your method. Alison

Hello,
I am not sure this will answer your question or meet your needs but this is what I do. I rarely use F6 to go to the download page. I simply use windows E for file explorer and then do first letter navigation to get to the download page. Then I open the file that was downloaded and either read it or save it. While I am sure there are many ways to work efficiently with the download bar (F6) I find this method effective for me and not frustrating. I must admit that I found Internet Explorer easier to use because it gave you an audio cue to hit alt N and then you could simply tab to open or save and then arrow down to complete your necessary actions. Hope this helps some and thanks to everyone on this list for all of the tips and instructions which are constantly being listed. I learn something new every day.

A while ago someone mentioned how to download and the item would automatically be placed in your downloads folder without having to go through the f6 procedure. Could someone please remind me how this is done. And, whilst on this topic, do we no longer use alt n to access the save or open options? Alison

Hi, Leonard. I don't know exactly what type of device the computer thinks you're hooking up, but the setting would be in Control Panel>AutoPlay. Change whichever setting affects the phone to View Files In Windows Explorer. Then you can see what's on your Phone. Also, you can vary the amount of time these toast notifications stay onscreen, and I'll tell you below how to set that, too.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
1. Open Control Panel. 2. Open Ease of Access. 3. TAB to Use the Computer without a display, and press ENTER. 4. TAB about five times, until you hear How Long Should Notifications Stay Open? 5. Adjust the combo box to the length desired. 6. TAB to Apply, and press ENTER. 7. TAB to OK, and press ENTER. Now that notifications stay onscreen longer, you have more time to press SHIFT plus WINDOWS plus V to hear the notification. You may also see the notification in Action Center, which you get to with WINDOWS key plus A. Bill White billwhite92701@att.net

If you want that message not to display, press the windows key and type the word "autoplay". There are choices concerning what you want the computer to do when it sees various types of external devices--SD card, flash drive, and so on. When you find the choice you want, you have to press enter on it or the computer won't remember. then tab to the next device and choose again.

the next time you plug in an external device, windows/autoplay will do whatever you set it to do.

Files are automatically placed in whatever folder you have set as your downloads folder in your browser. F6 just takes you to the downloads payne where you can 8view* your files – f6 doesn’t actually do anything, per se, just places your focus on the downloads area. Are you looking to either see what folder your downloads are going to in-browser? Do you want to change it? Do you want a prompt, or no prompt? All this is stuff you configure in settings of your browser of choice. Of course there are default settings – I cannot remember what those are as I am always fiddling with stuff. Right now Chrome just downloads when I activate a download link or button; no prompt or anything. I think I have Firefox set to be a bit more “prompty”. Often though what I’ll do in either is open the context menu for a link, press k, and enter in a filename from there when the usual ‘save as” dialogue box pops up. You can enter a full path there too, so there’s never any doubt or question as to where your files are going.

Thank you much for these instructions; However, I noticed something, When creating the built-in table 1, It only goes three headings deep; My document has some headings that are 4 or 5 levels deep; 3-5(a)(1)(A) For example.
How do I get the table of contents to recognize headings deeper than level 3?

Hello, I’m sorry for not getting back to you so soon guys Well, inserting a table content is quite easy indeed. After you have added all the headings you want, Go to the first page of the document, you can insert a page break if you have already written something onto that page. I always Do it just to be sure that my table of contents always will be on the first page when I push control plus home. Anyway, when you’re in the first page of the document, press alt to focus the cursor on the upper ribbons, then arrow right or left to references, and press space bar to open this tab. By default, you will be on the option called table of contents, so press space bar again and using down arrow choose automatic table, then hit enter, and your table should be inserted.
s Best, Leo Bado.

Leo, Is that done with the Word feature for creating a Table of Contents? I havent’ used that in decades, but could look at it.

Hi, I don’t know if you have already done what I’m going to suggest, but after adding headings to my word documents, I usually create a table content in the first page, in this way, whenever I open my document, I can jump to a specific topic quicker than you can say Jack Robinson!

Just wanted to report back that I’m loving this quick way of adding headings to Word documents. I took the time to create my own way I want the fonts to appear or each of them and now I’m finding using for this in other documents. Such a great way to quickly jump around in larger documents.

Press CTRL alt and whatever number you want. For example, 1 for heading 1 text and 2 for heading 2 text. You can press the above hotkey either before or after typing your text. Just know that after you type text you want in heading xxx, you have to of course select it before pressing above hotkey.

Re: how to download without going through f6 downlod bar
Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>
After I determined my download folder, I navigated to it with File Explorer, and while it was selected, but not opened, I right click or use shift+f10 and select create shortcut.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Then copy that shortcut to my desktop and I can jump to that folder any old time.
