I talked to FS about your second problem.  All they could suggest is forcing jaws to load later in the startup sequence.  That didn’t fix it for me.  What  fixed it for me was moving my system to a faster SSD drive.  I didn’t expect that result, but it was welcome.

A simple one first.

Jaws 2021 speaks the count and position of shortcuts on the desktop, files in a folder etc.

For example:

It will say “file.pdf 1 of 20”

If the folder has 20 files in it.

I have just upgraded from jaws 2018.

2018 did not say the number or position of the file in the folder.

Is there a way to turn this off?

I only want to know the name of the file, not what position it is in the list, or how many files are in the directory.

The second thing:

I mentioned this before, but wondered if anyone since has encountered this.

I have raised a ticket about it with sight and sound in the uk.

When jaws 2021 loads, you cannot use “insert+j” to bring up the jaws menu.

You have to quit jaws and start it again.

I mentioned this problem before with jaws 2020 (demo version), but i thought it might go away, now that i have been able to purchase the full version of jaws 2021.

However, it has not.

I have tried all the usual, uninstall reinstall, repair, etc.

Jaws 2018 is not on the computer now.

The only thing that i have left is to uninstall jaws 2021, remove any files or folders with “freedom scientific” on it, clean the registery with ccleaner, and then reinstall jaws 2021.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if i am rambling.

Patrick,

Curious, have you tried using alternate Insert keys with J to see if that works?  For me, I cannot get the JAWS menu to open with the caps lock key, but it works with the numpad 0 or the standard insert key.

Yes, that is a good idea.

I have run across sites like this where there is something that needs to be clicked on next to the edit field that won’t open.  This usually then opens up a calendar where the date can be chosen.

Clarence,

Do you have a smart phone, such as an iPhone?  I highly recommend using AIRA service for these frustrating website issues.  You can get 5 minutes of personal assistance every few hours. They also used to have a promotion for free support to job seekers; I don’t know if that is still going.  Look at the www.aira.io website.  Essentially, you load an app on your phone that allows you to call into a set of trained personal, visual assistants who can use your phone camera to see what is going on and guide you.  You can additionally load a program on your computer that will allow the assistant to access your computer to actually do tasks for you, but this is not necessary.  I’ve used the service on some applications at work that are not fully accessible with JAWS.

Hi

I’m having similar issues with Jaws 2021 and 365. It either stops talking completely and won’t start again so I have to do a hard reboot or it gets really slow when I’m writing a message and runs words together. I guess that’s not a Jaws issue though with the running together of words. That implies the whole system is slowing down but it’s only started with 365 and Jaws 2021 which I got around the same time. The braille also disappears off my display. I’ll go back to 20 and see if that runs properly.

Cheers

OK, then something with Jaws and the new 365 update are not getting along, but it still could be something extra loading that is bogging down your system.

Do you have the January JAWS update?

Type, msinfo32, into the Run dialogue, press enter and do the following:
When you run msinfo32, tab once from the initial "system summary" level of the tree view. There should be a whole list of specs there, which JAWS should
automatically read as you arrow up and down. You can even move by first letter navigation. There you will see "installed physical memory", "available memory",
"virtual memory", etc.

There is indeed a "memory" section under "hardware resources" too, but that doesn't list your available ram; instead it shows data about your installed
memory modules --  too technical for me at this time at any rate. The more basic information you need is just under the "system summary" level.

To find out the RAM, tap the Windows key.

Type system in the edit box.

Hit enter and you should be on system Info.

Tab once or twice to a list of 14 items.

Arrow down to about.

Make sure it says selected.

Then tab until you hear Device specifications Copy Button‑

Press space to copy that info and then paste it somewhere.

That ounds like a great processor, but if you have 8 GB of RAM or less, that may be the problem.

To run both Windows 10 and Jaws, you should have 12 to 16 GB of RAM.

But, it could be just all the other garbage tha tis loading down your system on start up.

If computers for the Blind cannot help, then I  would call Microsoft Accessibility and get them to help you sort out what you can disable from loading at startup.

What are the specs of the computer?

My impression is that they use lower end processors and RAM, so it could be it is being overloaded.

I’d remove anything you are not using, especially anything that loads on start-up.

If it is the issue of the processor and RAM, reinstalling Windows won’t help.

Hi,

My computer, which I obtained from Computers for the blind, has a very weird issue, where as soon as I open outlook, Jaws2021 (latest build) quits talking, until I Alt+tab away from the window, and come back.

I tried a reinstall of jaws, to no avail.

I was working in edge earlier, and that was enough to get my fans going a very high speed.

This happens more often than it should.

I’m going to contact them tomorrow, to get permission from Computers for the blind, and if they say, “yes,” I’ll do a complete reinstall of windows.

The computer comes with programs I’ve never even used, & jaws is still being finicky even after a clean install of it.

Please advise on next steps, if you think a reimage is to drastic.

Thanks,

For Google meet, there are IOS and Android apps that can be downloaded from their respective stores.

On the PC with Jaws, it is designed to be used right within  the browser, and Chrome seems to work the best.

You do not need to download anything for the PC, however, there seem to be several Chrome extensions that will enhance and improve your experience with Google meet, but they are not essential.

I have enjoyed using google meet, which you can get to by going to

Meet.google.com

All the buttons appear to be labeled, and as with many web-based apps, you may achieve good results especially if you turn the Jaws virtual cursor off.

You have complete control over your camera and microphone, there is a link that will copy the meeting code to the clipboard automatically for you to send to others, and you can turn on captions.

Unfortunately the captions are not too easy to read with Jaws, at any rate, the IOS and Android apps are very accessible as well.

I’m wondering what you guys might know about using JAWS with a Zoom-like platform called Google Meeting. I’ll be downloading and playing with it, because I’m being asked about it. Can someone let me know how well it works with JAWS and how accessible it is in general?

I’ve only worked with Zoom, Skype, and Teams, and while I’ve heard of Google Meeting, I’ve never used or needed it.

I’d appreciate any information. Meanwhile, I’ll be trying to figure it out as well.

OK, then something with Jaws and the new 365 update are not getting along, but it still could be something extra loading that is bogging down your system.

Do you have the January JAWS update?

Best of luck,

Richard

Hi Jessica,

Give the following a try:

Press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue, and type, msinfo32 , and press ENTER.  Tab 1 time and down arrow through the list to find the RAM information

Hi,

I’m not seeing an, “about” option.

When I open system information I see:

System summary, which contains:

Hardware resources

Components

Software environment

Which of those categories should I be looking under?

Thanks,

Jessica

Thanks,

Jessica Dail

Hi there,

I’m wondering what you guys might know about using JAWS with a Zoom-like platform called Google Meeting. I’ll be downloading and playing with it, because I’m being asked about it. Can someone let me know how well it works with JAWS and how accessible it is in general?

I’ve only worked with Zoom, Skype, and Teams, and while I’ve heard of Google Meeting, I’ve never used or needed it.

I’d appreciate any information. Meanwhile, I’ll be trying to figure it out as well.

Hi everyone,

looking for help.

using jaws Version 2020.2003.13

& Microsoft word version 2016

lets say I create a table in word,

4 columns, 4 rows.

now using the table keys,

control, alt, arrow

as I come down either column 2 3 or 4

the jaws is reading out the content in column 1 before it reads the content of the row I'm in.

How do I stop the jaws from reading the content in column 1?

Thanks for any help,

Angus

Cheers

Paula.

Hi,
Yes, ongoing JAWS issue. Most times JAWS corrects itself after a second
or two but sometimes I must use arrow keys or even tab away and back to
Outlook for the problem to correct.
Has been around for a couple of versions now.

Hi all,
I'm using Office 365, and the last couple of days that when I'm going
through unread messages after I delete one Jaws doesn't move to the next
message, it says "zero items, to move to an item press the arrow keys." This
doesn't happen all the time but most of the time, if I arrow up/down then
it'll move to the next message, is there any way to have just move to the
next message right away?
Also, sometimes when I'm in my inbox I'll get a message that pops up saying,
"2 of 4 tasks have been completed successfully cancel all button," then it
gives a couple of percentages (I usually hit escape before it gets to this
though) and then goes away. Any idea why I might be getting this message,
and how to prevent it? I'm using Office 365, the latest Jaws 2021 and
Windows 10 version 2004.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!!!

Not sure if you'll get any better responses here so I will chime in and say that the platform is web-based and seemed accessible to me. That said I never really figured out how to use it or what its benefits were. There are message boards and such for your team to communicate on, which in theory is alright. I don't think you'll really have accessibility issues but the usefulness of this type of thing still feels somewhat obscure to me. Maybe it'll make sense to you.

Hi folks

A quick question, if I may. I need to work as part of a team on Trello which, I gather, is great for scheduling and ticking off collaborative tasks. Does anyone have experience with this space as far as accessibility is concerned? If it isn't accessible, do you know of any open source alternatives that I could propose to the group?

With thanks,

Good morning to my fellow jaws users.

  1. Where can we find the area that allows us to adjust how often we want our mail to come in via keyboard commands?
  2. When I ship mail out with attachments, I usually go to the file that I’m going to attach then go into the sent to menu and go down or up arrow to sent by mail then put in the address and so on.
  3. How can I add not only one attachment, but multiple attachments to the outgoing letter?
  4. If I remember correctly, within WLM, you started adding attachments by alt I, then went through the keyboard shortcuts to add multiple attachments to the letter.

For some weird reason my wave file for receiving mail isn’t working in my sound scheme.

  1. I have both the desktop mail and the new mail with the same wave file.
  2. When I go to test the file it plays correctly.
  3. But, when I want it to go off, it doesn’t.
  4. The help desk will be calling later today to see if it is fix and we’ll take it from there.
  5. But for now, it isn’t going off.
  6. The wave file that I want to go off is the trucker4.wav file from the old Jim Kitchen game trucker for the beep beep sound effect since I have a roadrunner account.
  7. Many thanks for those who try to help me out.

Hi Stan,

If you do a say line with JAWS key+up arrow on a folder or file in your OneDrive folder, it will tell you whether the folder is in the cloud or on your device.

To make a folder available on your device or not, you can get to the option in the context menu with shift+f10 when on the relevant folder.

If you make a folder available on your device, by default all its sub-folders and files should be available too so it's best to make available the highest level folder you’ll need, hard drive space permitting obviously.

Cheers,

Ed
