I’m thinking you both are right.  I was surprised that Picture Smart works, but maybe the ping for that goes to a more widely known server and the ping for the voice assistant is going to a freedom scientific site.  It’s not a huge loss if I can’t get it to work on my work laptop. I   just thought it might be fun to play with. I tried to use Sharkie the other day to invoke a JAWS command that I could not recall, but I just used the command search layered keystroke instead.

Hi,

If you are working on a computer that is locked down by an administrator, I don’t think the voice assistant will work as it needs to go out to the web to do some things which administrators in a work environment has locked.

Hi all,

I sent the following message to Vispero support.  I havent’ heard back yet, bug wanted to share this to see if anyone else in a similar situation is having the same problem.

Hello,

I’ve used Voice Assistant on my home laptop.  Today was the first time I tried to use it on my Win 10 machine at work, using JAWS 2021.  I get the following error message after saying “Sharkie”.

The Voice Assistant has failed to connect to the service. Please check your Internet connection and try again.

I am on the internet, but on a laptop with no admin privileges and behind a firewall.  I can successfully use PictureSmart and Convenient OCR.  It seems all is set correctly in the Voice Assistant section of Settings Center.  So, are you aware of any issues with this working behind firewalls?  Could there be a setting I can change?

As an FYI, I already know of issues where our firewall settings mean my company IT guy installs my JAWS from the full install version for secure environments and I cannot download the manual into FS Reader.  Not sure if that same scenario is at play here.

I had forgotten to ask the following additional question.

This concerns the address book within outlook 2019.

  1. How can I add multiple e-mail addresses within the contact inside outlook 2019 via the keyboard?
  2. 2. When using WLM, you could tab over to nickname and type in a nickname/title, so when you started typing in that nickname, the entire address would show up within the to field.
  3. Via keyboard commands, how can we do this within outlook 2019.
  4. The only reason why I had switched from wlm to outlook 2019, was because wlm started to become unstable and I needed a new mail package.
  5. Many thanks for the help.

Good morning to my fellow jaws users.

  1. Where can we find the area that allows us to adjust how often we want our mail to come in via keyboard commands?
  2. When I ship mail out with attachments, I usually go to the file that I’m going to attach then go into the sent to menu and go down or up arrow to sent by mail then put in the address and so on.
  3. How can I add not only one attachment, but multiple attachments to the outgoing letter?
  4. If I remember correctly, within WLM, you started adding attachments by alt I, then went through the keyboard shortcuts to add multiple attachments to the letter.

For some weird reason my wave file for receiving mail isn’t working in my sound scheme.

  1. I have both the desktop mail and the new mail with the same wave file.
  2. When I go to test the file it plays correctly.
  3. But, when I want it to go off, it doesn’t.
  4. The help desk will be calling later today to see if it is fix and we’ll take it from there.
  5. But for now, it isn’t going off.
  6. The wave file that I want to go off is the trucker4.wav file from the old Jim Kitchen game trucker for the beep beep sound effect since I have a roadrunner account.
  7. Many thanks for those who try to help me out.

The second of your questions is when outlook is checking received
messages and sending any outstanding ones, just leave it alone and it
will go right away. It does this every so often, you can adjust how
often, but I forget exactly where that is.

The entire purpose of OneDrive just as is the case with Dropbox is to upload all your files to the cloud so you can access them from multiple devices.

Whether all your files are also stored as a local copy on your computer depends on a setting in OneDrive. If you go to OneDrive Settings and to the "Settings" tab, you find the following after about 5 tabs:

Files On-Demand, Save space and download files as you use them

This I sa checkbox, if it is checked the files on demand setting is turned on which means files are kept in the cloud until you use them. I prefer to have a complete copy of all my files on my laptop as well as on my work computer so I uncheck this setting and this means all files are downloaded to the computer and then are kept in sync, e.g. if I add a file on my laptop and then go to work, this file will also be synced/downloaded to my work computer. If I open a particular file like an Excel spreadsheet and make changes at work and I then go home and open the file on my laptop these changes will be refelected there. It's basiclaly like using Gmail with IMAP or Outlook.com with Exchange where all your email is kept on the server, but also synced to each device where you set up the account. The nice thing with such cloud services is that if I keep all my documents in OneDrive, i.e. if I change the location of the Documents folder from c:\users\Your User Account\Documents to c:\users\your user account\OneDrive\Documents and I buy a new computer, all I have to do is sign in with my Microsoft Id when I set up the new computer and all the documents then appear, I think the Files on demand settings is the default, however, so I would have to uncheck this on a new computer if I want the files to download there as well.

You can also change the location of the Pictures folder and under the Backup tab in OneDrive settings you can also enable your desktop and while this may not be new, you can actually enable backing up your Documents and Pictures folder there so you probably wouldn't even have to change the location any more.

When you run msinfo32, tab once from the initial "system summary" level of the tree view. There should be a whole list of specs there, which JAWS should
automatically read as you arrow up and down. You can even move by first letter navigation. There you will see "installed physical memory", "available memory",
"virtual memory", etc.

There is indeed a "memory" section under "hardware resources" too, but that doesn't list your available ram; instead it shows data about your installed
memory modules --  too technical for me at this time at any rate. The more basic information you need is just under the "system summary" level.

To find out the RAM, tap the Windows key.

Type system in the edit box.

Hit enter and you should be on system Info.

Tab once or twice to a list of 14 items.

Arrow down to about.

Make sure it says selected.

Then tab until you hear Device specifications Copy Button‑

Press space to copy that info and then paste it somewhere.

That ounds like a great processor, but if you have 8 GB of RAM or less, that may be the problem.

To run both Windows 10 and Jaws, you should have 12 to 16 GB of RAM.

But, it could be just all the other garbage tha tis loading down your system on start up.

If computers for the Blind cannot help, then I  would call Microsoft Accessibility and get them to help you sort out what you can disable from loading at startup.

What are the specs of the computer?

My impression is that they use lower end processors and RAM, so it could be it is being overloaded.

I’d remove anything you are not using, especially anything that loads on start-up.

If it is the issue of the processor and RAM, reinstalling Windows won’t help.

My computer, which I obtained from Computers for the blind, has a very weird issue, where as soon as I open outlook, Jaws2021 (latest build) quits talking, until I Alt+tab away from the window, and come back.

I tried a reinstall of jaws, to no avail.

I was working in edge earlier, and that was enough to get my fans going a very high speed.

This happens more often than it should.

I’m going to contact them tomorrow, to get permission from Computers for the blind, and if they say, “yes,” I’ll do a complete reinstall of windows.

The computer comes with programs I’ve never even used, & jaws is still being finicky even after a clean install of it.

Please advise on next steps, if you think a reimage is to drastic.

Thanks,

Jessica Dail

OK, then something with Jaws and the new 365 update are not getting along, but it still could be something extra loading that is bogging down your system.
Do you have the January JAWS update?
Best of luck,

Hi,

Thank you all for you assistance.

I just found out that I have 16GB of ram.

I should also say that my computer worked just fine before the latest office 365 update.

Thanks,

Hi Jessica,

Give the following a try:

Press, Windows key + R, to open the Run dialogue, and type, msinfo32 , and press ENTER.  Tab 1 time and down arrow through the list to find the RAM information
plus a lot more info about your computer.

Type, msinfo32, into the Run dialogue, press enter and do the following:
When you run msinfo32, tab once from the initial "system summary" level of the tree view. There should be a whole list of specs there, which JAWS should
automatically read as you arrow up and down. You can even move by first letter navigation. There you will see "installed physical memory", "available memory",
"virtual memory", etc.

There is indeed a "memory" section under "hardware resources" too, but that doesn't list your available ram; instead it shows data about your installed
memory modules --  too technical for me at this time at any rate. The more basic information you need is just under the "system summary" level.

Hi,

I’m not seeing an, “about” option.

When I open system information I see:

System summary, which contains:

Hardware resources

Components

Software environment

Which of those categories should I be looking under?

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi,

Of all the Microsoft apps, Outlook has always given me trouble. You can try to repair your office suite.

Go to program and features(Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to launch the Run box. Type appwiz. cpl and click OK to open Programs and Features.

Find your Microsoft app in the list and hit Shift F10 or application key

Arrow down to change and hit enter. The repair dialog box will appear.

Do the online repair, it is longer, but more thorough. HTH
