Apart from my HP laptop, which has its own internal wireless adapter, the other systems which use a wifi connection, they all have the same make and model USB wireless adapter, which is Asus. Up to this week, all the computers using the Asus wireless adapter have been reliable enough. I used the same wireless network connection and the same ID number for the network.

Yes, on the WIFI settings, you want to connect automatically.
Did you get the opportunity to enter the SSID and password?
If not, that may be the problem.

No, the connect automatically will save the wi-fi password and connect to that network whenever it is in range.  If it doesn't do so, the driver is junk.

Hi.

I don't know how easy this would be to do, but if possible, move the problem computer to the same room where the WiFi router is temporarily. This should show whether it's distance that's the problem.

Wifi usb adapters are a crap shoot.  If it needs to be manually reconnected, I'd junk it and get something different, it doesn't sound to me like a bad connection issue, it sounds like a junk driver that doesn't have enough sense to reconnect on startup.

Hi Dave,
I've never set mine to connect automatically, if I'm thinking of the same setting you are.
The first thing to do is to look for available networks and find the one you want to connect to, and then enter on connect, and then enter the SSID and password for your WIFI.

sounds more like a network config issue or a bad adapter. 20ft. is not very far. Even for a cheap USB dongle. I would try resetting the network settings in control panel. If that doesn't work then try a new adapter. If you are comfortable with installing PCI cards, I would get a PCI-E WiFi card they are much better than USB ones.

When I bought my laptop, I tried one of those fans that you sit the laptop on that provides plenty of circulation but it was too thick to use on my keyboard shelf.

So, I created my own stand.

I took 24 pennies, 6 per stack, and used Duct Tape to create four little legs and taped them to the laptop right next to the little bumps that supposedly serve as legs on a laptop.

My computer has never gotten too warm since.

If I use it on my lap, which I almost never do, I use a board to sit it on.

When you use the laptop, is the computer resting on a hard surface, such as a table, without a soft cloth or material, between the laptop and the table?

It is very important to ensure that the ventilation slotson the underside of the computer are not partially blocked or totally blocked.

When I use my laptop on my lap, I have a piece of laminated wood which was cut in such a way that when the laptop is resting on the piece of wood, there is about 3 inches of wood jutting out on either side of the laptop and 2 inches, jut out at the front and the back. The piece of wood, is between half and 3 quarters of an inch thick.

Hi,

Wondering if this may be an issue with your laptop that is affecting JAWS performance?

Some areas to consider:

How much memory do you have and does your ongoing work consume much of the memory?

Not often but at times the computer will not clear a program from memory even after it, the program, is closed.  Your re start of the computer fixes this issue.

Is your laptop being cooled adequately??

Laptops, especially newer, will slow the cpu if temperatures rise. (Thermo throttling )

Thus the performance of JAWS and other programs may be compromised.

Your issue may indeed be JAWS related however just a couple other ideas.

Hi All,

I am not exactly sure how to describe this, but I will give it a go. I am running Windows 10 and JAWS 2021 – the issue isn’t specific to any program. It seems that after I have been working for a while on my laptop – for the morning – JAWS starts to get a bit sluggish by times. It is slow to respond when I press a key, and it is kind of intermittent. I also notice, at the same time that the sound is less sharp – I’m really not sure if that is at all helpful.

If I shut down and restart it seems to go away until a few hours later.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Cynthia

I find the arrowing around with Jaws 2021 or 2020 to be less than useful.
It either gets stuck in the category list or it does says emoji panel open or sometimes out of the blue emoji panel closed.
I'm finding the search technique when first opening it to be the most effective.
But, If I really want to arrow through things, I'll just use Narrator.
From Joseph Lee's recommendation, I will also try NVDA.

But, where did you find the setting to close the panel after inserting one?
That would help too.

Richard,

What is the difficulty? I use the emoji panel in Windows 10 with Jaws 2021 and it seems to be fine.
Maybe I'm not a power user, I usually just use a fairly limited set of emojis, but if I open the emoji panel with Windows + Period I can arrow around and Jaws reads the emojis. It won't read the first one it lands on when you open the panel until you arrow right to the next one and back, but that's not such a big deal.
I have Windows set to close the emoji panel after I insert one which I for the most part find more convenient.
I can also open the panel, type something like "smile" and all the emojis I get then are usually different smily face emojis. If I want the rolling on the floor laughing emoji and don't want to arrow around a lot I just type "floor" and Jaws automatically announces the emoji and I can just press enter to insert it and exit the panel.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi all,
This reminds me of initial frustration I had three years ago when emoji panel first appeared in an Insider Preview build. I can't speak to how another screen reader has managed to do this (NVDA is way off-topic here), but suffice to say that emoji panel is an overlay window, not really another window that can move system focus around. To support screen readers, emoji panel fires UIA property change event whenever you move among emojis, and I bet this isn't done correctly when the panel first opens. JAWS is supposed to announce emoji panel changes but it appears it isn't doing that properly in older releases; I heard reports that JAWS 2021 has improved support for emoji panel.
Making matters more complicated is a change to emoji panel design being tested by Windows Insiders. Unlike current emoji panel design, the new emoji panel (internally named Windows Input Experience Panel) combines emoji panel and clipboard history, along with bringing GIF's. Visually it is laid out as a web document, and it internally fires another UIA (notification) event whenever you select emojis, clipboard entries, and GIF's. Unfortunately, JAWS 2020 won't quite cut it because this event, UIA notification, is supported properly on JAWS 2021 and later and is required to fully use the next generation emoji panel. Again I can't speak to details as to how other screen readers can support the next generation emoji panel (I can confirm that it works with Narrator; as for NVDA, ask me offlist and I'd be happy to give you a tour as to how it does it; I am the one who wrote emoji panel support for NVDA and continues to maintain that code in some form, hence my note that NVDA work is off-topic here).
A more detailed discussion of internals of emoji panel and its uses can be found here (it talks about current emoji panel design from Version 1809 era but most are applicable to 20H2):

By default emoji panel shows recently used emojis. You can press Tab to move between emojis and categories, then from categories list, use left or right arrows to move between categories such as (most recently used”, “people”, “celebrations and objects” and what not and press Enter to activate a given category. Emoji panel will remember your category selection the next time you open it.

Hi, Ann. I like that method, too. The problem with this method, though, is
that, sometimes, JAWS doesn't restart itself. If it's going to work, it
usually always works. But on some computers, for whatever reason, when you
press JAWS key plus Windows key plus F4, JAWS quits, and stays gone.

Hi, Cynthia. This is not a fix for the problem,
but it is a less radical method of restoring JAWS to better performance.

Rather than shutting down the computer,

1. Press JAWS key plus F4, and if you are asked
if you want to quit JAWS, click Yes.
2. Restart JAWS by either going to the desktop
and pressing the letter J, or open the "run"
dialog with Windows key plus the letter R, and type JAWS2021 and press
ENTER.

This will allow you to get JAWS working again
without having to leave any tasks you may be performing.

Hi All,

I am not exactly sure how to describe this, but
I will give it a go. I am running Windows 10 and
JAWS 2021 - the issue isn't specific to any
program. It seems that after I have been working
for a while on my laptop - for the morning -
JAWS starts to get a bit sluggish by times. It
is slow to respond when I press a key, and it is
kind of intermittent. I also notice, at the same
time that the sound is less sharp - I'm really
not sure if that is at all helpful.

If I shut down and restart it seems to go away until a few hours later.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Cynthia

Wifi usb adapters are a crap shoot.  If it needs to be manually reconnected, I'd junk it and get something different, it doesn't sound to me like a bad connection issue, it sounds like a junk driver that doesn't have enough sense to reconnect on startup.

Hi Dave,
I've never set mine to connect automatically, if I'm thinking of the same setting you are.
The first thing to do is to look for available networks and find the one you want to connect to, and then enter on connect, and then enter the SSID and password for your WIFI.

OK, let's see if I can say what I've figured out.  Once you find the category you want, you press enter and then tab twice, then you can arrow through all the choices within that category. That's what I learned using Narrator, and it works the same in JAWS.

Hi,
You need to use left or right arrow keys to move among emojis in the current emoji category.

Thank you for this. I didn’t ask the question, but I paid attention to your answer. But how do I actually select the one I want to enter? I can’t seem to activate any particular one.

Thanks.

Hi,

By default emoji panel shows recently used emojis. You can press Tab to move between emojis and categories, then from categories list, use left or right arrows to move between categories such as (most recently used”, “people”, “celebrations and objects” and what not and press Enter to activate a given category. Emoji panel will remember your category selection the next time you open it.

If you use the Windows-Period, it will take you into a list of them.

How do I find the Windows list of emoji symbols, and use JAWS to insert that into a text box?

Well, the floors/ceiling will not be as solid as the walls.

But, the suggestion to try swapping dongles sounds like a good trouble shooting tip if you haven’t done that.

Dave, perhaps you could give more details about the router, the number of rooms away from the router, and even what kind of building?

Is it two stories, old lath and plaster or newer construction?

House or apartment?

All this can impact the Wi-Fi signal.

I agree, try a better adapter and/or go for a meshed networking solution. Extenders will resolve a connection issue, but  will sacrifice network speed dramaticaly.

Power line adapters allow you to connect to ethernet using your electric wiring.  Another thought is to get a different wi-fi adapter, sounds like what you bought wasn't any good.

Hello everyone:

If my problem is inappropriate for this list, please let me know where I can go to get help to resolve it.

We have a DELL PC computer. It is running the latest version of Windows 10. the latest version of JAWS is also installed.

Recently, I had to move the computer from one roon to another room. In the original location, the connection to the network and the internet, was through an ethernet connection, and I had very few problems. In the new location, I connected the USB Wifi dongle and installed the software and selected my ISP's router. I chose to have the computer connect automatically to other devices on the network.

My problem is, each time I turn on the computer, and try to access the internet, retrieve my email or, connect to another computer on the network, I get the message that there are no networks available. However, I have checked the setting to have the computer connect to the router automatically, when the system is in range, but still the system does not connect the the router each time I start the computer.

Any and all suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Another thing to try is insert+windows+4. I hold it down a couple of seconds; JAWS goes silent; then it restarts itself.

Hi, Cynthia. This is not a fix for the problem, but it is a less radical method of restoring JAWS to better performance.

Rather than shutting down the computer,

1. Press JAWS key plus F4, and if you are asked if you want to quit JAWS, click Yes.
2. Restart JAWS by either going to the desktop and pressing the letter J, or open the "run" dialog with Windows key plus the letter R, and type JAWS2021 and press ENTER.

This will allow you to get JAWS working again without having to leave any tasks you may be performing.

Subject: JAWS getting sluggish/cutting out?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Cynthia

Dave,
Try swapping the dongles, just to be that the new one isn't defective.
