When I bought my laptop, I tried one of those fans that you sit the laptop on that provides plenty of circulation but it was too thick to use on my keyboard shelf.

So, I created my own stand.

I took 24 pennies, 6 per stack, and used Duct Tape to create four little legs and taped them to the laptop right next to the little bumps that supposedly serve as legs on a laptop.

My computer has never gotten too warm since.

If I use it on my lap, which I almost never do, I use a board to sit it on.

When you use the laptop, is the computer resting on a hard surface, such as a table, without a soft cloth or material, between the laptop and the table?

It is very important to ensure that the ventilation slotson the underside of the computer are not partially blocked or totally blocked.

When I use my laptop on my lap, I have a piece of laminated wood which was cut in such a way that when the laptop is resting on the piece of wood, there is about 3 inches of wood jutting out on either side of the laptop and 2 inches, jut out at the front and the back. The piece of wood, is between half and 3 quarters of an inch thick.

Hi,

Wondering if this may be an issue with your laptop that is affecting JAWS performance?

Some areas to consider:

How much memory do you have and does your ongoing work consume much of the memory?

Not often but at times the computer will not clear a program from memory even after it, the program, is closed.  Your re start of the computer fixes this issue.

Is your laptop being cooled adequately??

Laptops, especially newer, will slow the cpu if temperatures rise. (Thermo throttling )

Thus the performance of JAWS and other programs may be compromised.

Your issue may indeed be JAWS related however just a couple other ideas.

Hi All,

I am not exactly sure how to describe this, but I will give it a go. I am running Windows 10 and JAWS 2021 – the issue isn’t specific to any program. It seems that after I have been working for a while on my laptop – for the morning – JAWS starts to get a bit sluggish by times. It is slow to respond when I press a key, and it is kind of intermittent. I also notice, at the same time that the sound is less sharp – I’m really not sure if that is at all helpful.

If I shut down and restart it seems to go away until a few hours later.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Cynthia

I find the arrowing around with Jaws 2021 or 2020 to be less than useful.
It either gets stuck in the category list or it does says emoji panel open or sometimes out of the blue emoji panel closed.
I'm finding the search technique when first opening it to be the most effective.
But, If I really want to arrow through things, I'll just use Narrator.
From Joseph Lee's recommendation, I will also try NVDA.

But, where did you find the setting to close the panel after inserting one?
That would help too.

Jaws is really a pain in the royal ---- when it comes to using the emoji panel.
It would be nice if someone who knows how to do this reliably would record a podcast going step by step.
I get about 1 in 5 tries to work.

However, if I put Jaws into speak on command, and launch Narrator, I can get it about 3 out of 4 tries.
I just tried with Jaws to get tino the people category and nothing worked. Left or right, up or down, tabbing, nothing, nada, no way.

Hi,

By default emoji panel shows recently used emojis. You can press Tab to move between emojis and categories, then from categories list, use left or right arrows to move between categories such as (most recently used”, “people”, “celebrations and objects” and what not and press Enter to activate a given category. Emoji panel will remember your category selection the next time you open it.

Well Sieghard, et al.

I have Windows set to close the emoji panel after I insert one which I for the most part find more convenient.
I can also open the panel, type something like "smile" and all the emojis I get then are usually different smily face emojis. If I want the rolling on the floor laughing emoji and don't want to arrow around a lot I just type "floor" and Jaws automatically announces the emoji and I can just press enter to insert it and exit the panel.

Best regards,

Hi all,
This reminds me of initial frustration I had three years ago when emoji panel first appeared in an Insider Preview build. I can't speak to how another screen reader has managed to do this (NVDA is way off-topic here), but suffice to say that emoji panel is an overlay window, not really another window that can move system focus around. To support screen readers, emoji panel fires UIA property change event whenever you move among emojis, and I bet this isn't done correctly when the panel first opens. JAWS is supposed to announce emoji panel changes but it appears it isn't doing that properly in older releases; I heard reports that JAWS 2021 has improved support for emoji panel.
Making matters more complicated is a change to emoji panel design being tested by Windows Insiders. Unlike current emoji panel design, the new emoji panel (internally named Windows Input Experience Panel) combines emoji panel and clipboard history, along with bringing GIF's. Visually it is laid out as a web document, and it internally fires another UIA (notification) event whenever you select emojis, clipboard entries, and GIF's. Unfortunately, JAWS 2020 won't quite cut it because this event, UIA notification, is supported properly on JAWS 2021 and later and is required to fully use the next generation emoji panel. Again I can't speak to details as to how other screen readers can support the next generation emoji panel (I can confirm that it works with Narrator; as for NVDA, ask me offlist and I'd be happy to give you a tour as to how it does it; I am the one who wrote emoji panel support for NVDA and continues to maintain that code in some form, hence my note that NVDA work is off-topic here).

I guess this is one of the situations where you get what you pay for. I use QuickBooks Online which is very accessible, but then it's a subscription based service so you have to decide if you want to pay hundreds for the scripts and it's not like the desktop version of QuickBooks is free or if you want to just pay a bit each month. Are you using it personally or for business? Not sure how much a personal/self-emploed type of subscription is, I pay I think $35 a month here in Canada and that is after a fairly significant discount I get as a member of the Canadian Federation for Independent Business, but I have two incorporated companies I have to do bookkeeping for, one is just a holding company which owns my building and it has a very low volume of items, the other is my retail business with undreds of transactions a month.. I don't use it for Payroll since I use a payroll service for that.

Sieghard

A more detailed discussion of internals of emoji panel and its uses can be found here (it talks about current emoji panel design from Version 1809 era but most are applicable to 20H2):

However, if I put Jaws into speak on command, and launch Narrator, I can get it about 3 out of 4 tries.
I just tried with Jaws to get tino the people category and nothing worked. Left or right, up or down, tabbing, nothing, nada, no way.

By default emoji panel shows recently used emojis. You can press Tab to move between emojis and categories, then from categories list, use left or right arrows to move between categories such as (most recently used”, “people”, “celebrations and objects” and what not and press Enter to activate a given category. Mario,
This gets some easier results, but TI doesn't get the person category, but for me the first item is person with headscarf, and as I right arrow, things like tiger, ticket, etc.
If I type FA then I get faces.
CE and it seems I get some of the celebration objects.

There doesn't seem to be a set group of letters but it gets you closer to what you want.

😌

I agree FS should do some scripting to make it easier to pick the desired emoji. as it is now, it's quite discombobulated.

after right arrowing from opening a category, they all have 44 items, or what ever the number of items are in the category. instead, it should read 1 of 44, 2 of 44, etc. as the user keeps right arrowing.

Hi,

By default emoji panel shows recently used emojis. You can press Tab to
move between emojis and categories, then from categories list, use left
or right arrows to move between categories such as (most recently used”,
“people”, “celebrations and objects” and what not and press Enter to
activate a given category. Emoji panel will remember your category
selection the next time you open it.

Dave,

I am not sure who your internet provider is.  I have AT&T.  Their gateway (modem/router combination) is frankly just barely functional.  I had problems connecting to wifi throughout my 2-story house.  What dramatically helped this situation was to turn off the router function of the AT&T gateway and connect it to a 3rd party router.  Since then we have had very few problems with wifi.  I am not sure about your laptop not automatically connecting via the USB bondgle.

Hello everyone:

If my problem is inappropriate for this list, please let me know where I can go to get help to resolve it.

We have a DELL PC computer. It is running the latest version of Windows 10. the latest version of JAWS is also installed.

Recently, I had to move the computer from one roon to another room. In the original location, the connection to the network and the internet, was through an ethernet connection, and I had very few problems. In the new location, I connected the USB Wifi dongle and installed the software and selected my ISP's router. I chose to have the computer connect automatically to other devices on the network.

My problem is, each time I turn on the computer, and try to access the internet, retrieve my email or, connect to another computer on the network, I get the message that there are no networks available. However, I have checked the setting to have the computer connect to the router automatically, when the system is in range, but still the system does not connect the the router each time I start the computer.

Any and all suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Power line adapters allow you to connect to ethernet using your electric wiring.  Another thought is to get a different wi-fi adapter, sounds like what you bought wasn't any good.

Dave, perhaps you could give more details about the router, the number of rooms away from the router, and even what kind of building?
Is it two stories, old lath and plaster or newer construction?
House or apartment?
All this can impact the Wi-Fi signal.

Dave,

If a long distance, buy an extender from places as Best Buy. Walls and going from one floor to another will cause such issues.

Richard, after invoking the emoji picker, start typing ti. it should put you on the people category, and just keep right arrowing. is this what you are looking for.
