moderated Navigation of Settings in new MS Edge

I’m stuck on navigating the settings area of MS Edge.  Once I’ve opened settings with Alt F and arrowing up to Settings, I know a new page loads.  I cannot figure out how to get focus to the left area where there are different sections for setting options.  I’ve tried tabbing F6, and using the JAWS cursor, but I’m not figuring this out.  I was trying to get to the section where you change the startup page options.  Can someone enlighten me?  Using JAWS 2021 and Microsoft Edge Version 87.0.664.60.

Hi,

I have experienced the same issue with my doctor’s patient portal and MetroFax website. They both allow you to fill out the form fields but don’t even try to submit the information. I have tried everything except a hammer but to no avail. However, I did complain to MetroFax and it was determined it was a problem on their side. So, your problem may be on the source side and not you.

I ran into the same problem yesterday when completing a report on a site for work. I also had a few radio buttons that Jaws would not select no matter what I tried.

I finally just temporarily turned off Jaws and turned on Narrator to do those few task.

Since Narrator did the task without a problem, that told me that the problem is with Jaws. At least thats the case with the problems that I was having.

Sorry for the confusion.

I mis-stated my original action.

When I hit control end to get to the bottom of the document, and then hit insert numpad 3,  I can no longer get information about the file, such as number of pages, etc..

When I do this, I now hear focus, zoom in, zoom out, zoom 100%..

Does anyone know what might have changed here, and how I can get my original document file information back?

I’m using Jaws 2021, Windows 10, and Office 365 here.

I wonder if this is the result of yet another Microsoft 365 update?

Has anyone experienced problems with the J2021.2012.57.400-any that
was published Tuesday?
I grabbed it yesterday and installed it last night. I had the early
January jaws 2021 running successfully on my system.
Anyways, after installing it I rebooted and now jaws2021 will not run.
So I started the J2021.2012.57.400-any again and it immediately said
that it needed to run a repair. So I did. But it comes back
immediately and crashes.
Yes, I'm working on an account that has admin rights on my system.
So looking for things I can do to get the repair working etc. or
things I can try while waiting for Monday so I can talk to Vispero support.
This happened to me when I grabbed that build. Yes, there are things you can try, but none are easy or pretty. First, try to uninstall all the dozen Freedom Scientific components via Add/Remove Programs, Apps and Features or a third-party app such as CCleaner. If you get errors, download Microsoft's Program Install/Uninstall troubleshooter. When you run it, select advanced mode and check the automatic repairs check box. Then, select Uninstall rather than Install, although this doesn't matter because you'll be presented with the same applications list. When the list populates, use first-letter navigation to locate the first Freedom Scientific, then select Try Uninstall. This can unfortunately only be done one application or component at a time because the troubleshooter closes after it tries to uninstall whatever you've chosen. So, keep a File explorer window open with the executable because you'll be running the same sequence around a dozen times.
This will hopefully go off without removal errors. when all the Freedom Scientific Components are uninstalled, reboot, then manually delete all Freedom Scientific directories everywhere except your user profile, Appdata, Roaming. This includes Program Files, Program Files (x86) and Program Data. Then, run Regedit and search either for Freedom Scientific or JAWS and remove all the major keys under Software for User and Local Machine. Then, keep searching and remove all entries that include Freedom Scientific or JAWS.
Finally, uninstall all the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime executables using Add/Remove programs in the control panel. Microsoft makes a command-line utility that will do this, but it then tries to reinstall all 18 components, which, in this case, defeats the purpose. They must be uninstalled so that JAWS doesn't find them when attempting to install. Those components are the likeliest source of your repair and installation errors.
Like I said, none of this is pretty. If you follow all these directions and call Vispero tech support, they'll likely tell you that you've done your entire due diligence and there's nothing left to do but escalate your case. You may then get a return call from a certain person on the escalation team who will chastise you for having "messed around" with registry settings rather than just call them. ignore this. Hopefully, at the end of this arduous journey, you'll get the new JAWS build installed without having to torture yourself with Vispero tech support. There is absolutely no need for Vispero's products to require such intensive troubleshooting to install or uninstall builds. Their tech support are poorly trained in dealing with this problem and their development team obviously hasn't considered it enough of a priority to fix the problems once and for all.
All the above procedures are necessary because the Freedom Scientific components are incorrectly removed and updated when you install the new build over your existing installation. Even though this is happening to hundreds or thousands of users, Vispero claims it cannot reproduce the problem. Well, we've been reproducing it around the globe.
Anyway, do let me know how you get on. Rest assured, there's light at the end of this tunnel. the latest build is very snappy and more responsive than the previous 2021 releases, so it's worth some trouble.

Jeff:

Chord dots 1,2,3,4,7, meaning press all six keys at once and release: spacebar,1,2,3,4,7

This turns contracted Braille on and off.  You will cycling between three settings: contracted Braille off, contracted Braille on for display, and contracted Braille on for input, this last setting means your input and output are both in contracted Braille.

Hi Andrew,

This can be changed in Quick Settings of an application, Jaws key + V, or in the, Settings Center default all applications, Jaws key + 6, then, control, shift + D.

In the search field type, punctuation, and when  the results populate you want, Punctuation Level.

Press the spacebar on the Punctuation level to toggle through your options and for what you're looking for you want to stop when you hear Jaws report, All.

In Quick settings after making the change tab to Okay and press enter to save / close.

In the Settings Center after making the change tab to apply press the spacebar and tab to okay and press enter to save / close.

A hotkey can be assigned to toggle the punctuation settings on the fly, if you're interested.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Subject: punctuation when reading by word

What do I need to adjust, either in Jaws or other programs, to have Jaws read each word with its punctuation included?
If I type the following in Notepad:
We went to Washington, D. C. yesterday, and all was well.
When I read through the sentence by word, the commas and periods are treated as part of each word. This is what I want all the time.
If I write that same message in Microsoft Word, Jaws treats the punctuation as separate words when reading word by word.
In Ted Notepad, where I really want to work, the problem gets worse when writing out words with apostrophes followed by commas. Then you have to deal with three stops when reviewing by word. This makes it especially hard when writing any kind of code, because Jaws stops at every parenthesis and bracket.
Can someone help?

Ya kinda sad... I have been paying for Jaws for over 25yrs. No I don't want you to tell me how much that is! LOL But I am finding that the free alternatives are working more and more when Jaws won't. don't get me wrong I am not ready to switch. Having to relearn all the little tricks and work arounds for a new screen reader is daunting.

Well, the youtube interface becomes pretty clear once you go through it and play around a bit. Once you have channel subscriptions, there will be a tab on the page that you can select and open that will display a list of channels you have subscribed to. But some of that content, especially new content, will also appear on the youtube home page. It’s not complicated, but the best way to understand is just to use it.

Also, definitely recommend using chromium-based browsers with youtube as they will be fast and responsive to player key-presses especially (skipping around, pausing, and so on).

So, if using the PC cursor or the Jaws cursor or turning off the Virtual cursor doesn't work with the space-bar, enter key or the left mouse click. Try using the touch cursor. shift plus PC cursor. Then go to the button and try all of the ways to activate it. double click the PC cursor quickly to exit touch cursor. Sometimes using the jaws cursor and right or left arrow'ing in the button will help. This works mostly with links but you never know what will work nowadays!

I’m not sure if I have additional questions yet. I guess I need to start by seeing if an old Google login still works or creating a new one so that I can do subscriptions. My sighted husband uses subscriptions a lot, but I wanted to be sure it worked OK with JAWS before I bothered wit the Google account business.

I’ll have to play with the RSS approach that Hope suggested, too.  That may be a little beyond me at the moment, unless I add it to the RSS feed in Outlook.  Kind of feeling overwhelmed by having to learn a bunch of new technology at work lately, which is why I want to get the Freedom Scientific channel easily accessible.

You can do this without an Youtube account via RSS. Here's the RSS feed for the FS channel. https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UCLlctxRAroB4ApeQd5b_I6A

All the RSS feed URLS for Youtube start like that, the only thing that's different is the channel ID. There are userscripts I use to find RSS feeds, including ones for Youtube. They require installing a browser extension, then installing the script itself.

Apparently this is considered an “old-school” way of using youtube nowadays, but I only really started taking advantage of it in the last year and change.

Did you have any more specific questions about it?
