I understand what is happening, but don't have solutions yet. The
issue is that Google Docs is doing echoing with "live" regions, and
JAWS is also doing echoing of characters.
You could always adjust echo and if you create a special Google Docs
profile that could be added to the Settings center for that profile.
There also might be a setting in Google Docs to adjust typing echo.

Yes, I second all this.
You have to find a speed that works for you. If Jaws is ahead of you and you get stuck somewhere, you can quickly navigate to the particular spot that's giving you trouble and keep going.
It does take practise though.

It takes some practice. I’ve been doing this for a number of years, I am a pastor, and use voiceover for my notes on Sunday. The concept would be the same with jaws however. Couple of things, be familiar with the content as much as you can before you start and if you can format the document in such a way that jazz only reads a small portion of any one time. Just before you are ready to start your next section advanced jazz and allow what you hear to be slightly ahead of what you’re speaking. You can do it be patient with yourself as it takes as I said quite a bit of practice.

Hello,

I have the following questions:

First, I normally listen to JAWS at 65%. Even after slowing it down,
if I try to listen to the text line-by-line, I find that by the time I
am done reading and have to speak, I am only able to retain 40-50% of
what I have heard. So I end up losing some content.
On the other hand, if I listen to JAWS one word at a time, I find that
I end up being much too slow, such that my speech sounds disjointed
and halting.

Second, I am wondering how your experience differs between verbally
reproducing new content [i.e. material you have never read before]
versus content you are already familiar with.
Put simply, would it pay to familiarize oneself with the content to be
reproduced beforehand?

Third and lastly, can you suggest some pointers for building up one's
capacity, to be able to get better at doing this i.e. listening to
JAWS and speaking out what it is reading at the same time?

Hi Bill. Thanks but I did have a sighted person who looked and found nothing that JAWS can read. Pat (on this list) gave me a great suggestion about downloading the drivers directly instead of using the HP Smart which does it all for you. This way, some of the older drivers also load in—and Open Book is a bit older. Since I’m using Open Book, that will fix the scan problem. I can always get it to print with control P.

I have to wait until my son can come back and do it for me, since I’m tech illiterate. It will be very soon, I hope.

Subject: Jaws & Discussion Board in Blackboard

Hi Everyone,

I'm working with a student who is using Jaws 2021 and is enrolled in an English course. The course is being delivered mostly online in Blackboard, version 9.1, I believe.

The issue we are having is with the Discussion Board. The students must post an introduction in the Discussion Board, and read and respond to at least 2 other student introductions.

When the student clicks on "Create Thread" to start his introduction,
Jaws goes into "Application Mode. In this mode, the student can type
in the Subject line, but there seems to be no way to get to the editor
where the student must type in his introduction. Well, he can get to
it by tabbing twice, but once there, he is not able to type anything
in this editor, and there is no indication that he has entered the
editor. Jaws reads "Thread: Self introduction. – ENGL-102-AS07(1) -
2021 Win..." when tabbing twice from the subject field. We can confirm that no text is being entered when typing by getting out of Applications Mode and narrowing down to where the Word count is shown, and it shows 0 words. The student is able to type his introduction in Word, copy all the text, and then paste it into the editor, but can not then read what he has pasted. We know the text has been pasted by the Word count, and once he submits his post, we are able to open it and read it with Jaws.
The same thing happens when trying to respond to another student's introduction. He is able to read the introduction, press enter on "Reply" but cannot type or even know when or if he is in the Editor.
He is able to type the response in Word, and copy and paste it into the Editor, but it seems like sometimes pressing tab twice from the subject field takes him into the editor, and sometimes he must tab 3 times, and since there is no indication that he is in the Editor, it is really hit and miss and quite frustrating.

Are there settings in Blackboard that can be changed to allow Jaws to work with the Editor in the Discussions area? Are there any Jaws settings that can be changed to make this work?

I also experience this same issue on my PC, so it's not specific to the student's computer. The problem also exists with NVDA. We are both running Windows 10 and Jaws 2021.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Russell

Thank you,

Russell

Hi,

Sorry getting to some of these messages late. If you haven't already done this, try Firefox. It works well with the Discussion Board in Blackboard.

Good luck,

Russell

Hi,

I am suffering from the same issue at Capella. In a conference call with a Blackboard tech and disabilities services at the school the issue was reproduced. The problems stems from an update to the Blackboard platform in the summer of 2020. It is an issue with application layer. JAWS being a screen reader only reads text and has had an issue with application layer from the beginning of time. Blackboard, in an effort to save processing time and other network resource task reducing techniques, have placed their apps on different concurrently running layers not to be confused with levels, laying on top of each other. With JAWS being a screen reader, it cannot dig down to the appropriate layer to read or interact with the layer you want to work with properly, but yet, it will read the entire screen in totality after you interact with it good or bad. The problem is known to Blackboard, but, as screen reader users, our voice is very small in this arena; therefore, the fix/change is not forthcoming any time soon. they're also very stubborn and in denial of the issue. The problem is not them, it is us? according to them. Go figure?

Subject: Jaws & Discussion Board in Blackboard

Hi Everyone,

I'm working with a student who is using Jaws 2021 and is enrolled in an English course. The course is being delivered mostly online in Blackboard, version 9.1, I believe.

The issue we are having is with the Discussion Board. The students must post an introduction in the Discussion Board, and read and respond to at least 2 other student introductions.

When the student clicks on "Create Thread" to start his introduction, Jaws goes into "Application Mode. In this mode, the student can type in the Subject line, but there seems to be no way to get to the editor where the student must type in his introduction. Well, he can get to it by tabbing twice, but once there, he is not able to type anything in this editor, and there is no indication that he has entered the editor.

Hi Jessica,

No I didn't try Narrator, but did try Edge, and it didn't work either. Firefox, however did work, so problem solved

Thanks for your response.

Hi Russell,

This may sound like a crazy question, but have you tried with Narrator? What about using the chromium version of edge?

Just some thoughts.

Thanks,

I use Waterfox. When I select a favourite from the Favourites folder which was created using IE, the web page opens in Waterfox in the same way as in IE

Hi Tom,

Let me chime in to agree with others on a strong preference for continuing to use the IE favorites rather than the clunky bookmarks in Chrome. One thing to add: when you open something from the Favorites folder, it will open in your default browser, not IE, even though you created them in IE. I very much hope that Microsoft changes its current Edge favorites to using the favorites folder in the user folder soon. Although called favorites in Edge, the whole structure is that of bookmarks in Chrome. If the big selling point of Edge is that it is supposedly part of the Windows operating system, then it should use the Favorites folder in the user folder. Creating favorites is the only thing I still use IE for.

Try hitting f12 to start a save as and see if you get any different results.

Otherwise, it sounds like the sort by groups is on in your Windows Explorer, or File Explorer as it is called now.

If that is the case, perhaps do a search on the web for changing the sort by options in File Explorer.

Subject: Changes to MS Word Menus

Hello Listers,

My MS Office updated automatically the other night.  I am currently using Microsoft Word Subscription Version 16.0.13530.20198.  This update has significantly changed how the menus work when saving a document.  Previously I could do an alt F and then hit A to do a save as.  This would bring up a dialogue box in which I could  shift tab twice and get a list of recently used folders from which I could use first letter navigation to get to a folder to open and complete the saving process.  Now when I shift tab twice I get a question about making pinned folders.  If I arrow down that list I can see folders that I have previously used but they are separated by "today", "this week" and "last week".  This same set up occurs when trying to open a document in word.  First letter navigation does not work in this configuration.  I am guessing that some view or feature that I normally use has been changed in the update.  Any ideas about what I need to do to get back to just having a recent folders or documents list that is not distinguished by today, this week and so on?

Thanks for any and all assistance.

I understand what is happening, but don't have solutions yet. The issue is that Google Docs is doing echoing with "live" regions, and JAWS is also doing echoing of characters.
You could always adjust echo  and if you create a special Google Docs profile that could be added to the Settings center for that profile. There also might be a setting in Google Docs to adjust typing echo.
