moderated Adding Members To An Already-existing Outlook E-mail Group

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

After a recent Microsoft 365 update, I am now unable to easily navigate and add members to an already-existing E-mail group in Outlook.

The procedures for doing this have apparently changed, and I haven’t been able to access the needed options, even with sighted assistance.

I have contacted Freedom Scientific about this, and they tell me this is a Microsoft issue, not a Jaws issue.

If someone has figured out a way to do this, please post to the list.

I’m using Microsoft 365 with the latest Jaws 2021 update on a Windows 10 PC.

Thank you!

Hello:

How can I, on a Win. 10 computer with latest JAWS build and Outlook 2019, get JAWS to recognize more than one column in an attachment—e.g., the list of board members in a meeting agenda(which it does recognize and read) plus the list of meeting activities? Thanks!

Al,

I think what you are looking for is to turn off the system tray notifications for Outlook.  Hit Alt F, then t to open the Outlook Options window.  Arrow down the Mail then tab through the setting choices.  There is a section or message arrival and a number of checkboxes.  I think I have all of them unchecked as I do not want any notification of new messages.  Tip: once you mark those checkboxes the way you want, use Shift Tab to cycle to the OK button.  There are so many settings in that window that you’ll be annoyed if you try to tab to the OK button.

When I’m in my inbox,  I’ve been experiencing the following issue.  It seems that while I’m reading a message that’s open,  I’ll get a notification sound that tells me that I’m receiving a new message, which reads the header of the incoming message. It will just start reading the message  on top of the one that I’ve been reading.  If anyone on list here has a fix for this problem,  please let me know how I can correct this problem from happening in the future.

Thanks in advance,

That is fine to get that impression  and probably Speak On is not for you.

However to be clear for others possibly interested you are technically not at all correct.

Where content restrictions apply it is actually completely opposite to the issue you describe.

The main limitation for example with Tunein on Speak On is that it is unable to access UK Based BBC Radio national stations, though can still access  USA stations relatively unproblematically.

In my Audio Tutorials I provide a workaround for that particular problem if people still want to access national BBC Radio content through Speak On.

The Podcast Directory Speak On deploys is also a USA and not a UK service.

It is true that there is a virtual implementation of the BBC Sounds Podcast service  in the Speak On app which I think most people find valuable, but there are also link   to American services such as ACB Radio and other US. Providers especially in specific genres.

Of course you can also import any particular Podcast feed in addition to the pre-selected ones available from the provided web directory.

It has been a while I just remember nothing on that suite was of interest to me.  It to me was like, I can’t stand Opera music, no matter where it comes from, it is still opera.  I don’t think any of the U S stations offered were of interest to me, no news, no sports. It still seemed a high percentage of what was on there was UK based.

Only the RNIB News and Magazine app is restricted to UK content, that is just 1 of the 10 possible apps available.

All the other apps can be accessed worldwide.

The Tune In radio app for example is US rather than UK based.

Speak On Media Suite provides a fully functional Podcast app alongside a raft of other extremely useful apps for use on a PC, including eBook reading, Daisy Book and Audio Book playing and access to the RNIB online News and Magazine service for people in the UK.

There is a slight learning curve which is why I produced a series of Audio tutorials on Speak On.

These Audio tutorials are accessible now from within the program itself under the optional VI Podcast App under the community section.

You can download Speak On  and learn more on

Rick, why not contact Spotify instead? Freedom Scientific (or whatever they’re called now) may be able to do something on their end with the JAWS software, eventually, but that’s when or if they care or get around to it. Spotify support might be able to offer some suggestions, or they may even be interested in making modifications for accessibility, if that’s what’s needed.

Do you use the free version of spotify? I might give it a gander sometime.

That’s what I have been doing, but I have just been wondering if JAWS could work with Spotify.  What annoys me about listening to podcasts using Spotify is that they always appear in descending, not ascending, order.  I have contacted this list and have asked if you could change that setting in Spotify using JAWS but nobody seems to know.  I’m going to contact Freedom Scientific again and suggest that they consider making Spotify compatible with JAWS.

It’s too bad Freedom Scientific is so ignorant of spotify. I haven’t messed with it so I can’t say how manageable it really is for a screen-reader user. I like podcasts nowadays, but I just go to their websites and download local copies of the episodes (not necessarily easily done with 8all* podcasts). If you use a desktop, you should be able to play episodes in your browser.

I have just recently become acquainted with Spotify.  I have submitted to your list questions about how to use Spotify with JAWS  and nobody is being of any help.  Today I tried contacting Freedom Scientific and they say that they don’t have anything to do with Spotify.  In fact, I don’t know if they have even heard of it.  So I’m trying to find out from anybody if there are any places where you can subscribe to podcasts which are compatible with JAWS and which you can use JAWS with, such as creating and adding to music playlists or, when you find a podcast if you want to hear episodes in ascending rather than in descending order.  If any of you know of any such programs that are compatible with JAWS will you please tell me what they are?  I do not use Apple.  I use a Desktop PC, use Windows 10 and use JAWS 2021.

When you’re not reading a message and you receive a new message in Outlook, is the new message still read? If so, sounds like you’re getting a notification. Hi Jim. What I would do is pick up a USB soundcard. They’re about $10 and you plug your headphones into it. Then you route your jaws to those headphones. In zoom, you need to go to the audio settings and set the microphone to your blue yeti, and your speakers to the USB soundcard headset.

Hello,

Have you played around with the JAWS Sound output found under the JAWS Utility Menu?

In there you can select where your speech output should be going.

Is your Mixer showing up as a plug and play?

You may have to make adjustments so that the mixer goes into the computer as a line in device if that is a USB mixer.

In Zoom you need to look under the audio settings under the setting menu and make sure your zoom call is going where you want it to go and then in the same audio section under setting you want to make sure that Zoom recognizes your microphone.

If you would like I’d be glad to do a Zoom call with you. I’m interested in the mike that you are using.

Subject: Looking for some ideas regarding a problem with Zoom, JAWS and a new USB mic

Greetings,

I’m not exactly sure who to ask, so I’ll just throw it out there. I figure this would be a good place to start.

For a few reasons, I bought a pretty high quality USB microphone (Blue-Yeti).  I want to be able to do some music and other things on Zoom, and this microphone will do quite a bit. The setup is very easy (plug-and-play), but that is also where things get interesting.

I’m using a PC laptop with JAWS as my primary computer. I encountered a couple of things.

First, when I plugged in the mic to the USB port, the audio from my computer went straight to the microphone. I didn’t know this until I plugged in headphones to the mic and heard the audio coming from there. I had to set the audio back to the computer, where I had computer speakers plugged in.

Is this normal? Someone else I know, who also has this microphone, encountered a similar issue. Once I set the audio back to the speakers, I thought things were fixed.

I launched Zoom and went ahead and did some mic tests to see how things sounded, and I figured once those tests sounded good, I’d be fine. The mic sounded great by the way, and I had Original Sound on, and a few strummed chords sounded good. Even just talking sounded much clearer. I heard no feedback through the speakers. I even did some recordings in a meeting I set up just for test purposes, and the recordings sounded fine.

Then, I ended up doing a quickconnect  zoom meeting with someone, and we noticed he was hearing an echo. We were just meeting to talk about things. We didn’t know where the echo was coming from. What was interesting was that he thought his echo was coming from his end, which ended up not being the case. He said my voice sounded fine. What he heard as an echo on his end, I heard as his voice coming in and out on mine, almost as if he was slightly breaking up.

We learned it was coming from my end after he had done some tests with other people. We tried meeting again, and the same issue happened. I figured I’d just not use the mic, since I was meeting with him informally. I tried unplugging the Yeti to see if it would go back to the internal computer mic. It didn’t. I plugged the mic back in, and I was able to be heard again, and the problem actually went away instantly, and we heard one another clearly. However, I could no longer hear JAWS. I don’t know if any other audio issues were going on. He sounded fine though.

Also, if I restart my computer without the mic plugged in, I can use Zoom with the laptop’s internal mic fine.

While it wouldn’t be ideal, I wouldn’t even mind starting a meeting, unplugging my mic and plugging it back in, and moving forward, but if I’m unable to hear JAWS, then that’s not good either.

I have no explanation for what might be happening and hope someone here might give some advice or ideas.

Jim

the student's computer. The problem also exists with NVDA. We are both
running Windows 10 and Jaws 2021.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

You might want to look at the help topics on Blackboard about using JAWS. They say to have forms mode turned to manual, but even that doesn’t work all the time. I to am a frustrated Blackboard user/student who uses JAWS. I’ve dealt with this many times, so try Firefox for your browser. It seems to work the best out of all the browsers used.

Hi Everyone,

I'm working with a student who is using Jaws 2021 and is enrolled in
an English course. The course is being delivered mostly online in
Blackboard, version 9.1, I believe.

The issue we are having is with the Discussion Board. The students
must post an introduction in the Discussion Board, and read and
respond to at least 2 other student introductions.

When the student clicks on "Create Thread" to start his introduction,
Jaws goes into "Application Mode. In this mode, the student can type
in the Subject line, but there seems to be no way to get to the editor
where the student must type in his introduction. Well, he can get to
it by tabbing twice, but once there, he is not able to type anything
in this editor, and there is no indication that he has entered the
editor. Jaws reads "Thread: Self introduction. – ENGL-102-AS07(1) -
2021 Win..." when tabbing twice from the subject field. We can confirm
that no text is being entered when typing by getting out of
Applications Mode and narrowing down to where the Word count is shown,
and it shows 0 words. The student is able to type his introduction in
Word, copy all the text, and then paste it into the editor, but can
not then read what he has pasted. We know the text has been pasted by
the Word count, and once he submits his post, we are able to open it
and read it with Jaws.
The same thing happens when trying to respond to another student's
introduction. He is able to read the introduction, press enter on
"Reply" but cannot type or even know when or if he is in the Editor.
He is able to type the response in Word, and copy and paste it into
the Editor, but it seems like sometimes pressing tab twice from the
subject field takes him into the editor, and sometimes he must tab 3
times, and since there is no indication that he is in the Editor, it
is really hit and miss and quite frustrating.

Are there settings in Blackboard that can be changed to allow Jaws to
work with the Editor in the Discussions area? Are there any Jaws
settings that can be changed to make this work?

Hi Al.

When you’re not reading a message and you receive a new message in Outlook, is the new message still read? If so, sounds like you’re getting a notification. If you want this turned off, do a search for notifications. You’ll be able to control what happens. I turned off Outlook notifications, because this was annoying me.

               Good evening everyone,

When I’m in my inbox,  I’ve been experiencing the following issue.  It seems that while I’m reading a message that’s open,  I’ll get a notification sound that tells me that I’m receiving a new message, which reads the header of the incoming message. It will just start reading the message  on top of the one that I’ve been reading.  If anyone on list here has a fix for this problem,  please let me know how I can correct this problem from happening in the future.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

In Outlook do you have the Reading Pane turned on, if so, it is best to turn that off and when you want to read a message in your Inbox just press Enter to open the message and it should begin to automatically read.

You might want to see if Action Center is in your System Tray and open that and turn off the Notification.

See if that helps.

Jim

Hi, Albert. The settings for Voice Assistant are in JAWS Utilities. So, JAWS key plus J. If you have JAWS in the System Tray, press ENTER on Voice Assistant in Utilities. It is now the first option. Then Arrow down to Settings and press ENTER. Once you use Right Arrow to open Voice Assistant Settings, you will encounter the following options. If you don't have JAWS set to give permission to collect anonymous user data, you will hear the following,

Enable Voice AssistantUnavailable
Only available when Anonymous Usage Data collection is enabled. Press the Talk to JAWS hotkey, the default is Insert Alt Space, to enable Anonymous Usage Data collection and start Voice Assistant. Close and reopen Settings Center to change settings.
1 of 5
Voice Assistant

Under this option, you will see the following three options,

Listen for wake word Sharky

Enable Voice Assistant sounds ‑
Microphone Input Device

Make sure the first two options are checked.

Make sure the microphone is the one you wish to use for JAWS voice commands.

I didn't need any additional training materials to use Voice Assistant. I just went to JAWS Help, selected JAWS Help Topics, pressed CONTROL plus TAB to get to the index page, typed in Voice Assistant, pressed ENTER, followed by F6. This opens the topic for reading. All the commands for Voice Assistant are listed, including the "wake word" which is Sharky.

Good afternoon everyone,

Could someone please tell me where I should go too find out  how too enable voice assistant?  I’m using jaws 2021 with windows 10 on a laptop computer.  I didn’t  find anything where the setting senter option is, so that’s  why I’m asking this question. I did find something called application settings, but when I went in there, I didn’t see anything about voice assistant.  Also, how would I find the most and latest Jaws   up to date training materials on the Jaws training page, and where do I go too get too the jaws training page.

Thanks in advance,

My guess is that, the microphone has its own sound card.  Jaws might be getting rerouted to it.
