Hello,

That sounds great that you found the mini USB port on the left side of the PacMate display.

I think you are mis-reading the text that display when you connect the display to the computer.

It should read: pm display 40 3.70

That is the latest and last update that was available for the firmware of the PacMate display.

Now, we need to be sure of the problem why JAWS is not starting with your PacMate display.

First, you should make sure that no other braille display is connected to the computer, some may say this is not necessary but I found this to help by disconnecting my Focus and then getting JAWS to recognize the PacMate display.

Let go into the JAWS menu by pressing and holding down the JAWS key/Insert key and the letter J.

Now press the letter L or using the down arrow key, select Braille Display.

Make sure that you have focus on the PacMate display and confirm that you are using the USB port for the display.

You may need to go to modify setting by tabbing over and opening that choice.

Make sure that you set it as the default display and tab to OK. You should then be prompted to restart JAWS, and I hope you have a shortcut key for starting JAWS.

If you would like further help, live in the 48 continental states, I’m in Central time and will be available for a tandem session and phone call after 1:30 PM today.

I have indeed finally found a mini USB port on the left side just under the insertions guide.    JAWS is now keeping it as my default but it seems to be failing to load the braille driver.

The display itself shows on power-up:

pm display  40  - k70

USB device info from device manager.

LibUSB-1.0: FreedomScientific [PAC Mate]

Device type:  libusb (WinUSB) devices

Manufacturer:  libusb 1.0

Device status  multi line  This device is working properly.

I found a few mentions that the Focus USB driver would work which is what I have installed as a USB driver at the moment.

Okay, have you looked on the left side of the display for a mini usb port?

When you plug the display to the Pacmate what version of the display is shown?

These are questions Freedom Scientific Support will ask so you should check these things out.

This is just a suggestion to figure out the problem.

They are still clipped together.  I’ve been searching the BX manual and didn’t see any option to run the display without the PDA part.  A quick examination of the display only section doesn’t suggest it would support running completely stand-alone as I see no USB type A or mini B port.  The display is working with the PDA part which is running 6.2 of the environment but I haven’t figured out how to update it since I don’t have any way of connecting CF cards to my system to prepare one for an upgrade path.

I figured they would flatly deny support since it is so old.  This came from an era of proprietary  USB protocols so I am expecting to need some sort of USB driver.

I did manage to find it in the Device Manager in control panel.  It’s listed under Other Devices under its name but doesn’t know much about it and says there is no driver for it.

Have you separated the display from the note taker?

My guess is the display is too old to be supported, but you may need to call FS on Monday.

Someone gave me this braille display and I’ve managed to get it up and running as far as the Windows mobile usage is concerned.  But I really want to be able to do braille display of my desktop PC running Windows 10.  I have it connected via USB but the computer doesn’t seem to acknowledge it from what I can tell.  The device is running off the power from the port and I know the cable works as I use it for my old Book Port Plus.

I’ve tried to tell JAWS that a Pac Mate is there in the braille settings by adding a display but it just never selects it (keeps switching back to no display).    As I’m on Windows 10, ActiveSync install is impossible (stopped support at XP).  And google has failed me so far for any details other that the ActiveSync companion CD had some USB driver bundled with it for the device.  No sign of that driver either.

It just seems to be such a waste for a usable braille display that  is still serviceable as a hosted display if the PDA part is not so useful now.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Moderators follow the philosophy of the group owner(s), and on lightly moderated groups we're not playground monitors.

Grousp.io gives the end user exquisite levels of control over the traffic they receive from any group, up through topic preview, which allows you to pick and choose only those topics you wish to continue to see once you've seen the first message.

I have posted the instructions, Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx), on every group on which I participate.  It is absolutely up to end users to avail themselves of the controls they can exercise and if they will not do that, or don't like how the group owner(s) and their staff administer a group, can unsubscribe or go to the no mail option and read via the Groups.io web interface.

Precisely:  main+owner@jfw.groups.io.

I even share the frustration with certain topics, but as I have already observed, history, long history, shows that this group is very lightly moderated and there are scads of topics that are not JAWS related in any way.  It is what it is, and if that's not acceptable, and you (any you) are not willing to use the control mechanisms available to you, and which I posted detailed instructions about using earlier, there is an unsubscribe address.

There is no one who's been reading this group for an length of time who could possibly believe it's either tightly focused on JAWS or tightly moderated.  So, when these things happen use the Mute this Topic link and the other tricks in, Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx)

David Kingsbury

Hi all,

I am trying to help a person I am training create a new Gmail password, but when he tries to log in, and uses the forgot my password button, he is asked to put in the last password he remembered. If he doesn’t remember anything, he gets totally stuck. This is an idiotic Catch 22. And the only way you can access a real human being  with Google is to log in first. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks,

As Brian pointed out, there is a mute topic option at the bottom of each message.
If you haven't created a password for your Groups.io accounts, you will need to do that, which is offered when you activate the mute topic link.
So far, I've done that with the parler and the what's this have to do with JFW messages, and now I will do that with the hey moderators ...
If you really want help from the moderators, write them directly, which is part of the list guidelines.

You would have a better experience using the website as opposed to the IOS
app. I cannot comment on the Android app.
Currently big-tech has succeeded in temporarily snuffing out Parler. Neither
the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store offer the parler app. AWS,
Amazon Web Services, has canceled the contract with Parler so there is no
expected return to service until Tuesday afternoon, 01-12-2021.
With a political agenda being carried out we as screen readers will suffer.
Until tomorrow don't bother but Parler.com is a manageable system to use.
You will need sighted assistance with the sign up process as there is a
captcha. A few months ago support could have assisted but I suspect they are
very busy now days.

For the record, I have found more support in furthering accessibility and
equity from those that are supportive of the main-stream ideas found over
there as opposed to the crowd that considers you & I a bother.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you said...but I think I know the sorts
of people you have in mind, and I think you underestimate the desire to make
converts and, shall we say, recruits to the cause.
And I wouldn't necessarilya ssume any platform is exclusively a den for such
people. I took a look at the site today and yeah, they are a bit strident
about the "free speech' angle, to the point where I get a "thou dost protest
too much" feeling fromrom it -- but I can't blame people from all sides for
being attracted to such a thing. Don't forget that the actual revolutionary
left has experienced its fair share of censorship as well.
Anyway, those interested should certainly raise their accessibility concerns
with the system operators and see if there are results.
Parler cares about PR, too, after all, and they've obviously gotten a great
boost from all this -- never heard of the platform before a few days ago,
myself. So it's in their interest now more than ever to get on board the
accessibility train.
And hey, there are blind Qs out there too, you know? ;)

Sticking to that particular aspect of the thread and people who are

Hello Maria,

Is it accessible with jaws, do you know?

These platforms are privately held or owned by corporations. For
example, a newspaper is not a free speech platform. it is a platform
owned by someone, who is responsible for what is said on it.

The expression of opinions is a delicate issue. We seem to have become
a society who mixes opinion with political agendas.

We all know what people say about opinions.

I am sorry to see people getting wrapped up in this issue.

There may be an option for the function keys in the bios.

Subject: Lenovo laptop and function keys

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the feedback last week on my new Lenovo laptop and function keys. I was able to get someone to change the operating system so that the function keys are no longer mapped the way they were originally. Now my alt F4 does work, but none of the other function keys seem to work automatically. Can anyone help me with next steps to get the function keys to map to the jaws commands?

I am also not used to the laptop layout. Yesterday when I set up my Outlook 365 account, it wanted a password, and then the laptop told me that the caps lock key was engaged. So I am not sure if the password I typed in wasin caps OR not, but it looks like when I try to put in that password, it is not working no matter what I try. I need to know what I am typing in using the laptop layout, whether it is caps or not. Thanks!

Bonnie

The problem was that if you loaded Windows Mail whilst Jaws was running Mail would close unexpectedly   after the review of just one or two messages in the inbox.

There would be no error message – Mail would simply disappear.

This was only a problem if Jaws was running.  Mail would worked as expected perfectly with either Narrator or NVDA.

For me this problem was not machine  specific  as it was occurring on both my laptop and desktop machines.

However Support had recognised the issue last week and said that they were escalating it to the software team.

Whatever the fix was it has been delivered at lightning speed for once.

Bizarrely just a couple of days after sending a Support message to FS Windows Mail seems, touch wood, to have stabilised with Jaws.

I am typing this email in Mail with Jaws, something I have not been able to do for weeks.

I don’t know if it is anything to do with the new January update, though the first few times I checked this out Mail continues to crash with Jaws running anyway. Apparently no longer. .

Alternatively there might have been some unseen update on Windows I suppose.

The only thing I have been doing differently is that I had routinely also had thunderbird open in another window   because of the propensity of Mail to crash with Jaws. However I have just closed thunderbird and Mail is continuing to work with Jaws so it looks like it is not related..

Before I report this apparent improvement I wonder if the other people experiencing problems with Mail have also seen the problem resolved?
