Incongruences between Jaws English and Jaws spanish

Gerardo Corripio <gera1027@...>

HI listers: I'm finally back after some time; very high expectations I'll
get lots of good things from here!

Yesterday I started listening to Jaws Daisy books to get a better grasp and
maybe learn some tricl or tip I might have missed, and found a few
inconsistencies between Jaws English and Jaws Spanish I'd like to point out;
maybe you guys have seen them?

For starters I've moved from Jaws12 to 13 which recently got translated in
Spanish. First of all I see no Spanish daisy books! I'd think I'd be able to
maybe learn some things by listening to the English daisy books, however
here is where some of the inconsistencies start:

The books say from the Help menu one can go to Traning which is the first
item. I looked and looked and can't find it in my spanish jaws! Neither that
or the Search for updates aren't there.

Yes those of us with enough english to understand, and with enough
experiences with Jaws are able to think up ways to get around and achieve
what is being taught in these books, but what about all those people who are
very excited to, once get Jaws, learn about the computer and all that it has
to offer? How are they suppose to achieve the filosofy by which these books
were originally designed?

2.-When downloading Spanish Jaws, the daisy books aren't there except for
the FS Getting started, thus having to download them manually.

3.-for some weird reason, FsReader doesn't recognize these Daisy files as
daisy! Hard as I might try to change directory and open the Daisy books, I
get a ding and yes I know they get installed in the correct place since I
can see them when I go to Program Files, Freedom Scientific, Jaws Training.

I'd like to say that thanks to the cassettes, preceeding these digital
books, I learned the basics, thus talking from personal experience. From the
time I've been on spanish lists, and I see so many questions posed on such
simple matters covered on these courses, I always had a dream to somehow be
able to colaborate with FS maybe by recording Spanish tutorials and maybe
incorporate them into Jaws Spanish software?

I invite you (if you know enough spanish that is) to visit my blog

<http://tuimagina.wordpress.com/> http://tuimagina.wordpress.com

In which I recently recorded a few Jaws Spanish podcasts.

Gerardo

The concept is that JAWS works off an object model of whatever is on the
screen, and it builds/maintains that model by intercepting everything that

goes through the video driver.

there is a video chain that allows insertion of drivers like PCAnywhere,
TeamView, DameWare to allow remote access to what's on your screen. JAWS
uses the same idea.

Older JAWS used a Video Intercept Manager or Display Chaining Manager.
They
switched to a mirror driver and now I may self correct here, use it either

with JAWS 12/13 or else the mirror driver is used only with Windows 7. But

at least it's something to consider, or to discuss with Freedom
Scientific.

Our company has a very large Java application. It has worked very well
with JAWS going back to version 9 that I'm aware of. We since have been
test with versions 12 and 13 and have found that dialog and message boxes
titles aren't spoken. I even ran older versions of our application to make
sure it was nothing in our new code causing the problem. And sure enough
the older application works fine with JAWS 11 but not with version 12. Is
this a known issue or is there a new setting I'm unaware of?

Thanks

Check that. The old non-functioning keystrokes were Insert+shift+M or
Alt+Ctrl+S. Give them a try -- you might be lucky.

I'm working in a workbook that is set up by months for Invoices, and I
have several Invoices that have to be made in a particular month,
calculation is done automatically for each sheet and summary--is there
a keyboard command in JFW 13 and Excel 2007 to create another sheet in
the same month? thanks in advance.

Re: Excel 2007 Adding a Second Worksheet

Dave...

There used to be a keystroke called "Manage Worksheets" tied to Alt+Shift+S
or to Insert+Shift+M, but they haven't worked for me since JAWS 12 came out.
Probably broken.

Best I can suggest is to Alt+h, then o then m to open the dialog. There you
can copy the current sheet, move sheets, etc.

I first notice the problem when I updated the JAB too 2.0.2 and JAWS 12 at
the same time. I didn't know if it was JAWS 12 or the new JAB. I finally
figured out that JAWS 12 didn't work with our new application using the
JAB 2.0.2 or our old application that uses the JAB 2.0.1.

Re: email and Jaws

Dave...

Hina,

Do you mean reading it automatically when opened? If so then Insert+V for
the quick settings, type message and then arrow to "message Automatically
reads" and check the box. Save.

If you mean it doesn't read at all, then do what I do: Unload JAWS and
reload. That usually clears it up.

titles aren't spoken. I even ran older versions of our application to make
sure it was nothing in our new code causing the problem. And sure enough
the older application works fine with JAWS 11 but not with version 12. Is
this a known issue or is there a new setting I'm unaware of?

Thanks

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Working with custom applications can be a trial. Has your IT staff
contacted Freedom Scientific? I think they'd at least try to help. If
your outfit is anything like ours, you may run into privacy problems,
but it's worth a shot. Our longstanding Internet app problems were
resolved by an upgrade of IE, and, ultimately, a migration to Windows 7.
In fact, save for IT and Web staff, I now have one of the more advanced
installations here at Medicaid.

jaws 13 64 bit with windows 7 and word perfect

John Fioravanti <fioresq1@...>

Hi: Thought this might help someone. Some time ago I posted that wordperfect 12 would not properly read with the cursors with jaws 13, 64 bit and windows 7 ultimate. I instaled wordperfect x5 and the cursors now work. X5 has a problem with reveal code and improperly reports font with insert+f; however, at least with x5 I can now read and type documents properly. Hope this helps someone. JOhn

Tom,
At this point, lets look anyways. Sounds like you looked at the spot of
which I am going to direct you.
1. Go to the desktop and remove selection with F five or CTRL space bar.
2. Press your applications key or Shift f 10 and arrow up to personalize
and press enter
3. Now tab to sounds link and press enter
4. Tab to the treview and press "N" for new mail notification.

5. Tab once to play windows start up sounds and make sure that is checked.

6. You can tab to test the sound or continue tabbing until you land on ok
and press space bar.

Re: Links won't open in outlook 2003

Well, changing the setting from text to html solved my problem. Thanks everyone.

open it again and the links work.

Okay, I know that what works in Thunderbird does not necessarily apply
to Outlook, but it might be worth a try. Remember when I was asking on
this list about the problem I had with Windows Live and how it crashed
and I couldn't get it uncrashed? One kind person on this list sent me
a link to download Thunderbird and I have been using it ever since.
At first the links inside the emails would not work for me. Since it
did not seem to be very related to JAWS I tried to get help from the
Bookshare Discuss list and everything they advised me to do did not
work. Then one day I opened up Thunderbird and got a notification that
an update was available for it. I installed that update and the links
started working. I thought I had solved the problem. Apparently that
did not do it because the next time I opened up Thunderbird the links
were not working again. Now I think that instead of the update solving
my problem it was the fact that while updating I closed the program
and opened it again. When it stopped working that next time I opened
it I ended up closing it and restarting it out of frustration and then
the links worked. The next time after that the links did not work
again. I closed the program and opened it again and they worked. Now,
every time I do my first check of email in the morning I open
Thunderbird and promptly close it. I have not had that problem of the
links not working since. I have no idea why this works and I don't
know that it will work in Outlook, but it shouldn't hurt to try it.

Gary,

When things are working properly, you can press Spacebar or Enter on
a link
in an open message in Outlook, just the same as with a web page. Omar's
problem is that it's not working now.

Omar, possible that you did change something with the install of
2010 and
subsequent rollback to 2003. Restore is not a panacea for all things
that
might have changed. How about if you now do a repair on your Outlook
2003
installation?

Omar,
In Internet Explorer or Firefox, and even in Microsoft Word when
links are
embedded in a document, you bring up a list of links with JAWS Key
plus F7.
You should be able to do the same in Outlook. I don't use Outlook,
so I
can't test this method of accessing links in that program.

Have you tried bringing up a list of the links like you would in a
browser? If JFW recognizes the links, then they should appear in
the list
and can be accessed by pressing Enter.

I just tried clicking on a link in outlook with the jaws cursor, and
that worked, but it really shouldn't be that way. We should be
able to
click on it with the regular cursor.

Dave,

Yes, jaws does say "link." I think the messages are plain text.

Omar,

Do you hear the word "link" when you arrow to that URL? If not,
then
it's
not a real link. Something may be wrong, like an embedded character
that
doesn't show.

Also, are these messages plain text or html?

I just tried that, and no go.

Omar,

Fortunately, there is a solution, which someone who rarely posts
to the
list
told me off-list. When you land on the link, arrow one character
to the
right. For example, if the link begins, "http...," arrow to the
letter
after
the "h." Then press enter.

Actually, you can make the link work from any point in the address
except
the first letter.

Subject: Links won't open in outlook 2003

Hello,

I'm using Outlook 2003 to check my emails. For some reason, when I
click on
a link that someone sends me, or a link that I cut and paste for
someone
else, it won't open. I get no error messages either. The link just
doesn't
open. Is there something in outlook that I need to change? If I
get an
email
from ebay or facebook, for example, with links present in them,
I can
click
on those links with no problem. Any help would greatly be
appreciated.
